Hmmm, more Flat-Pack....she wants this to replace this ugly thing.. When this was built, it was based on a 4 drawer Chester Drawers I was selling....then it became a pantry...and now a catch-all...open them doors at your own risk... Too tall, too wide, too deep, too full of... Already had some oak on hand.. 1 x12 x 3'6", three 3/4 x 6" and two at 3/8" thick x 6". Not nearly enough....sat down to make a drawing...while a second load of Oak sits around, getting used to the house... World Class Drafting Table? Tape measure to check a few sizes I need to match... Natasha: "You have Plan, Darlink?" Boris: "I always have Plan, they don't always work out, but I always have Plan" A front view. And, because i am frugal, and don't want to waste a second sheet of paper...flip this over.. Basic sizes called out. Locations of shelves. Cubby holes changed to Drawers...Oak? Counting what I had on hand..there is around 20bf of Oak sitting here...the new arrivals? Seem to have a bit of grain to them...and for me to work either around, or use... Drawer fronts? And.. Not all the grain I can use, though.. I will need some 1 x 3 stock....Hmmm. And the "bundle"...has a couple 3/8" thick boards...might be to build the paneled doors? Bookcase was built back in the mid 1980s...BTW. So...get the work jeans back on, tomorrow....and cut a few planks, and glue up a few side panels? Will do the base unit first...then the topper. Popular Post steven newman Posted October 17, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 17, 2018 Well...I wasn't supposed to wear my new, "Sunday go to meeting" Jeans to the shop....but.. Hauled a few planks to the shop....can't quite get 2 pieces 36" long out of the boards..drat. May use some of the cut-offs for the case's top, and a couple drawers... Top is, I think 25-1/2" wide...need to make a panel out of these 16" wide....as for the panels for the two sides.. Need to joint a few edges, before any glue gets applied...there is a small stretch of wane...will see if a rebate for the back will take care of that... Panel #2 is a work in progress....yes...the shop now has a tablesaw shaped object....much better when I rip for width...and rough cut for length... I think that will be enough for one day...Lung Stress Test in the morning...will see how much shoptime I get in, after that...stay tuned LarryS, Dadio, Cal and 4 others 7 Quote

steven newman Posted October 18, 2018 Author Report Posted October 18, 2018 Seems to be mainly white oak....yard sale oak MIGHT be red...nice contrast.. Tablesaw is one my Dad bought New in Box back in the 70s....i have since inherited it. Fence right now is the stock one.....Blade is an 8", 1/2" bore sort of thing, takes two wrenches to change the blade....IF I can find any new blades.. Cal and JIMMIEM 1 1 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted October 18, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 18, 2018 Well...I do have an apron I can wear... have this laying on the tablesaw....also good for doing glue-ups... I fired the splitter/guard today.....all it did was bind things up... About an hours worth...takes a while, went they look like this.. Had four edges to joint, used a few planes...some more than others.. In order to get them ready for a bead of glue, and a few clamps.. Tablesaw to crosscut and rip a few parts for side #2.. Might be a bit rough to blend this grain together....cut off pile is growing.. Will see what I can do with them.....door frames? tops? I have two old ones made of oak. Handsome..ain't it, set this aside, out of the way.. And this is the "inside" of the cabinet... Had three more boards to work on.. Kind of gappy? We have ways....Clamped one of the wider ones to the bench's side.. I had a straight line to try to joint for....will worry about the non-glued edge later... Used a No. 5 jack to get close to the line, then the No. 7c to get a full length shaving...then on to the skinny board.. Except this needed jointed on both edges...ever wonder about a use for the tool well? Then check for gaps... Meh...then joint the other wide board....then set things up for glue, clamps and cauls.. This time around, I needed a caul in the middle... Skinny board had a curve to it... Cut three blanks, to make a 16" wide, by 26" long top for the case... These are the "good" sides, too.....there was two leftovers.. Fancy? Wait until I turn it over... Hmmm..what to do with this one? Even has a tapered edge.. Swept the floor, again..now that the empty trashcan is back in the shop. Hung up the apron.. As to the difference between a #5 jack plane, and a #7c Jointer plane? The Stanley #5 has a cambered edge..the jointer does not.... Side by side...like Mutt & Jeff? Millers Falls No. 14 ( 14" long) also has no camber to the iron. I use it first, to get close to a line, then the 22" long #7c finishes things up... waiting on glue to dry, again.....then work on the panel for the top of the case. I plan to clamp the two sides together, THEN trim to final sizes...that way, they will match each other...might see what I will need for Pine parts for the inside of the case... Stay tuned.. steven newman Posted October 20, 2018 Author Report Posted October 20, 2018 Late last night, I went back to the shop, removed the clamps from panel #2. Placed it onto panel #1, and c clamped them together. Both had a slight cup to them...clamped the cup flat. letting them sit like that for a while. This morning, there was a Barn Sale....went there mainly for enough pine 1xs to do the inside of this cabinet. Shelves, and webframes. May need a bit more ( and better looking Pine) for drawer sides. Plan for today? Trim the panels to match each other, and square the ends...doing both at the same time, still clamped up. Then joint a few edges, and glue up the top. May get a start on some webframes, and shelves...we'll see. Will start after Lunch...stay tuned.. Cal, p_toad and Grandpadave52 3 Quote
