Popular Post steven newman Posted September 22, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 22, 2018 Oh kay.....Smart phone that talks to the heart monitor....went brain dead this morning ( they are sending a replacement, restart Monday) Cardio Check up....BP was a tad high..new pill for that...everything else was good to go. Got home, more weirdness going on...the insert for this project arrived.....so did a second one.. We ordered just one, and PAID for just one....hmmm. Decided to do a little "screwing around" in the shop...Face Frame needed installed. Clamps and sticks, to push or pull things into alignment.. Or pull thing until they are tight...had 3 drills set up..these first two.. One drills a 3/8" counter-bore, the other drills the pilot holes....the third? Is an impact driver, to make sure the screws are tight..with the top panel in my way, needed a way to power the drills.. Spent as much time switching plugs, as I did drill holes...working my way from the right side to the center... Had to pull this thing out a bit, to get the rest..all except the bottom rail....this old back isn't up to all that bending over, and the knees do not do "kneel" any more..so IF I can go to the mountain, I'll let the mountain come up to me...all these screws..only had one go off the wrong way...oh well. Will do the plug cutting later, along with their installs. While I had the drill handy..I made slotted holes in the top frame...to attach a slab with... Notice anything missing? Hmmm. We now have a flight deck. I was also testing the drawer front for fit... took 3 tries, to get this thing sitting where I wanted it.....the UGLY edge knot is around on the "Port side". Did some layout work on one end.. The Aircraft carrier has found it's compass? hate hitting those sharp corners with an elbow on the way by....Ends need sawn square, and this curve cut. This fellow does not like Ash....wants to do tear-outs....may land the No. 7c and this deck, and smooth out the glue joints. I did not do anything to the bottom of the panel.....out of sight/out of mind. Was even able to clean this mess up..finally.. Took a couple loads to the "can"....firepit may get used this weekend. Also..IF you are going to use this thing, wear ear plugs! It screeches as it works...almost as loud as a beltsander.. That has been it for today....maybe tomorrow I can work a bit longer? Stay tuned.. lew, Cal, HARO50 and 4 others 7 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted September 22, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 22, 2018 4 hours of shop time...and now Uncle Charlie is in the house....Working on Gatorade #2....hand is sore, from getting bit by the Stanley 45...more on that, later.. Biggie planes to knock the high spots down, the a tiny one to clean up ... Just a Stanley #3c.....got one end of the top milled.. Need to move this thing out a bit, so I can work on the other end...IF I don't get lost on the way.. Ok..Got 4 stiles to match each other, and not have a taper to them.. Each of these needs a groove along one edge....had to jig a way to hold each part.. So...I gave this old plane a work out.. . made in Cincinnati, OH about 1864....a bit of candle wax goes a long way....once I got two stiles all groovy, I clamped them in place.. Needed these set up, so I could cut the rails to size....plus enough for tenons...Square ends? Square right off the saw.. Then made sure they all were the same width... Tried that big, old plough plane on one of these....didn't go well. Reset the Stanley 45 and redo the jig a bit.. Then mark each rail for the cuts for a tenon....then do the shoulder cuts.. Had to set the depth stops on the saw....needed a jig of sorts, to hold a part vertical while I do the cheek cuts on the bandsaw.. Works for me..as each rail gets done, they get stashed away.. I can check the fit, too. no mortises, yet...maybe tomorrow? There are two skinny rails that go in-between these three....that is where the "Fun" begins They are 1-1/4" wide. fence on the 45 is 1"....something is going to give. Tried a clamp, this was the result. Skates on the 45 hopped out of the half-cut groove, and slammed into the other hand....going to leave a mark...one of the two skinny rails kept hopping off the bench..third time..it went into hiding..somewhere...until I said something about a firepit...then it showed up....finished the groove on it..this time with a pair of screws to keep it in place...wedged into the jig. Stashed it, and work on the other one... Floor looking clean? That is because while hunting for that part, got tired of walking around on all of this.. Took three snowshovel loads to clear things away....last rail has both of it's grooves done..no longer need to stash things away..but, I wanted to cut 4 blanks for the raised panels for this door.. Planed to all the same size. A No. 4 plane will bevel the edges into a raised panel. may need a rabbet around the back of the panels. Will have to keep an eye on the grain.. Want them to be close to the same direction....hmmm, cramps are starting in....time to stop for the day. Remember a time when I could work 8-12 hours in the shop....not anymore....4 is about the limit. Stay tuned... Harry Brink, HARO50, lew and 4 others 7 Quote
Grandpadave52 Posted September 23, 2018 Report Posted September 23, 2018 (edited) I hauled people around and mowed...still turn left or turn right? You accomplished much more and had lots more fun than I did...well all except for that encounter with the '45. Edited September 23, 2018 by Grandpadave52 Cal, p_toad, DuckSoup and 1 other 2 2 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 24, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 24, 2018 Was still tired and sore from yesterday....managed to get a whopping 5 mortises chopped...before Motivation left the building... Marked and cut these out. Called a haunch tenon. Longer part goes into the mortise, shorty just fill the groove in the stile, Top and bottom rail gets these. Jig to chop mortises in...keeps the part from hopping around on the bench. First chisel. Also Lew's Mallet. Had to sharpen the chisel a couple times, handle is getting a crack in it... "Relief Crew" Wide chisel to straight walls in the mortise, one one the left cleans the chips out....got the wide rails set.. needed these three done, so I can center the two skinny rails... One stile is done....only three more stiles to do....I set the second stile in place, will help lay things out . Taking tomorrow off...too sore, too tired....Rest up and try again on Tuesday... Stay tuned... Grandpadave52, Cal, p_toad and 2 others 5 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted September 25, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 25, 2018 Sitting here, having the second glass of Blue Gatorade....inhaled the other one....4 hours in the shop..again.. It was one of those kind of days... Un-written Law of the Shop: Any flat area will soon fill up with ..stuff. So, 5 mortises did get done, though Test fitted. Sitting here out of the way ( smart move..)...made a jig ( or three) and started the handplane stuff. A #3 AND a #4....adding a bevel to the end grain first...then re-do the jig to do the edge grain... Once all four edges look like this, flip the panel over.. The Wards (Stanley) #78 AND that Auburn #181 proceeded to make a rebate all the way around. End grain first, then these sides..dry fit? Then repeat for another panel....which had a knot on one edge..Grrrrrr. Finally got panel #2 done.. After about 4 hours. Was getting soaked, was getting tired and sore...fighting with the knot..and... That is not a shadow...that is the end of the chisel I was using to clean the chips out of the mortise.....finally got that dug out. Maybe tomorrow, I can get the other two panels done...and maybe a glue up? Then start either on door #2, or the drawer? Stay tuned... Harry Brink, HARO50, p_toad and 2 others 5 Quote

steven newman Posted September 26, 2018 Author Report Posted September 26, 2018 Some dummy doesn't learn.....panel number 3 is done, and in the door frame.....Monitor came loose and fell out onto the bench...got a little too sweaty for it to hold on... One less panel to do tomorrow Grandpadave52, p_toad and HARO50 1 2 Quote

steven newman Posted September 26, 2018 Author Report Posted September 26, 2018 Hmmm, pictures, or it didn't happen... Chisel.. Used to be a curve on the end.....may have to regrind a new one. That plane behind it? Auburn Tool Co. No. 181, Skewed Rabbet plane..since I am doing these panels like Paul Sellers does.... Might as well used a British made plane. Raising a panel generates two thing, in great quantities sweat and.. This is from one panel, and starting on the last one... Which is sitting in the vise, ready for tomorrow. And... Panel number 3. When I get #4 done, need a place for that clamp....or just spread some glue and clamp it all together.... Everything is here, for the other door....depends on how badly I hate 1/2 blind dovetails...whether I'll do the other door, or that drawer... Stay tuned. HARO50, p_toad, Cal and 1 other 4 Quote
steven newman Posted September 26, 2018 Author Report Posted September 26, 2018 Seems I am not allowed to getting sweaty while wearing this monitor.....keeps sliding around, or sliding off.... Made a big mess today... and on the bench? Methinks a bit of work got done, today.....sitting here, picking dried glue off the fingers, even... Panel no. 4 is done, installed, and the glue up done...getting some use out of the project, already? Will let this sit a while. Same with me...trying to get dried off to where that monitor will stay put... May get things set up later..as soon as I figure out what item needs done next.. Stay tuned ( and stay upwind? steven newman Posted September 27, 2018 Author Report Posted September 27, 2018 Will look through what is left of the Ash.....may have enough to make the two sides of the drawer....then just us the pine 1x6 as the back of the drawer? Then I can do through dovetails...since I am not that great at 1/2 blind ones....might be worth a look? Would be a change from all this bevel making, and chisel-breaking chops....Give me something easier to do for a bit. Will try fitting the door after the glue has a chance to cure. We'll see...stay tuned. Cal, Grandpadave52 and p_toad 3 Quote

steven newman Posted September 27, 2018 Author Report Posted September 27, 2018 Dug through what was left of the Ash 1 x 6s.....there will be enough for both the second door.. Even cut a couple pieces for the raised panels...tried a different saw, tonight... 9ppi crosscut. Maple frame, too. Needed a rub down on the blade with a candle.. And this is what it will be going up against....one part goes for the door, the other becomes a side of a drawer... Saws a straight line, well enough.. But the verticals need work..operator error, maybe? We have ways on straight cuts out... then fine tune.. What this plane was designed for. Was doing good, too.....until I noticed the "outside" board had slipped downwards...trimmed it to match the non-slipped one.. Edges have been jointed so the match each other. Not sure what I'll do with the "left-overs.." Maybe resaw the "good" half off? the other one? Too short, too long of a knot....firepit? Well, looks like through dovetails for the drawer, after all. Be a change from building door? Stay tuned.. Cal, p_toad and HARO50 3 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted September 27, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 27, 2018 Door came out of the clamps, today....needing a bit of work to get it to fit the opening... No. 7c at it again. Trimmed one end a bit, too. Then the hinges got installed....having battery issues with the other cordless drills... Once I got that top screw done, things kind of fell into place. There WAS a hole already drilled...didn't like where it came out. redrilled a better spot, washer to keep the knob from sinking into the wood, and cover the old hole. Drawer front. One edge needed jointed, was still rough sawn. Plane is a Stanley No. 5-1/2. Rumour going round that the 62 and this Jumbo Jack are the same size..really? Really? trying to see which face looked the better.. Then add a groove to the other side... Lay some toys out... And layout the pins.. And a "dovetail saw". . Saw some lines, then chop the waste away.. Was having issues with that hammer....was trying to convince it to "hit the wood, the wood!" Instead of my hand....wound up "firing it" and used the Rawhide hammer. Mark the tails, bandsaw to do the cutting.. Then chop the waste out . Dry fit? Meh..will do, for now...tested in the opening, to see IF it still fits.. Ok, for now. Bring this back to the bench, transfer lines to the other end of the drawer front, and saw & chop, again.. Use these to mark the tails onto the other drawer side...saw, and chop....only made one bad saw cut...got confused as to which was the waste.. Another dry fit. Still need to groove and dado the sides....cut the back to size, and cut the bottom plywood panel to size...might get a glue up tomorrow? Then back to building the other door. Have to test fit the insert. and locate where the fixed shelf above it will go...and build that...And lots of plugs need to be made..may have a use for that knotty piece of scrap? Taking a break, for now...3 hours of shop time, today... Stay tuned.. HARO50, Cal, Harry Brink and 2 others 5 Quote
