September 4, 20187 yr Popular Post Well...yard was mowed last night, just before it got too dark to see....came into the house...and not a single cold beer to be found... This morning...had a road trip to do with the Boss. Dropped her off at where she wanted to go....motored on down the highway...left turn at the old family graveyard.... Did a little wheel & deal......24 bf of Ash, with the Boss having to clean the fellow's house ( his "Boss" is away for a while) Stopped at Wall E World on the way home...Boss needed a couple things, I needed to correct the "No Beer" part. Got home..took a while to unload everything... Nice hat, just doesn't protect the ears, much. These boards are from the Wapak Shindig...finally got them in the house...the Ash? having issues with the right hand shaking....boards were 1 x 6 x 11'6"...cut in half to fit IN the van... Clamped together, and let it sit a few days....couple boards were bowed a bit ( will get a couple better views, when I get the tripod back upstairs) Grain isn't too bad...there are a couple knots in some of the planks. Some will need a straight edge sawn on them. Good news is, I barely made a dent in his supply... Boss saw a thing @ BigLots....that holds a fireplace insert, and can have a tv on the top. Door on each side of the insert. Need to sneak in with a camera, tape measure and notepad....and do a little measuring... By that time, the Ash should be about ready to mill... Stay tuned..( flooring stuff may get used as "accents")
September 4, 20187 yr Popular Post Steven a camera was how I use to get lots of my thinking for plans on new projects..I always asked if I could take pictures to take home and see if this thing would fit, color wise, style wise and mull over the price. I never was turned down. And some of the really hard constructed stuff I would get down and crawl under if I had to see certain things... for a better understanding.... Even had a lady say if you need it turned on its side I can get somebody to help you..
September 4, 20187 yr And if you get a straight-on picture (or graphic from the Web), you can transfer into a program such as Excel and make scale cutout diagrams. Some wheels don't need re-inventing.
September 5, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Have an ad, with the overall sizes... Brought the tripod upstairs, after taking a picture or two... The Add-a-chuck has a home. Back there along the fence, was the extent of my yard work, today....old Futon was buried in the weeds, dragged it out, and chopped the weeds..Futon will get taken out front, and set on the curb...first come, first serve. Now, about the Ash... Clamped up, so the bows are flattened out..8 slabs...average about 5'6" long. Not quite straight grained...will see how they mill up.. Kind of a mixed bag. May mill some of these.. Plane the grooves on the faces, and the finish off...may keep the T&G stuff....panels for the doors? As for that table back there... Shaker Bedside Table....was supposed to go on my side of the bed? Wasn't enough room..in the room. There IS another table sitting in the way, that I seem to trip over....legs are splayed out, and catch anything going by....it will be heading to the recycle pile in the shop...legs and the top. This simple table is narrower, and won't be a tripping hazard. The Boss keeps all the jigsaw puzzles on the other table....should be enough room on this one..? At least these don't splay out. Have a bunch of cans to haul to the recycle place...may slip into BigLots when done. Letting the boards sit a spell, for now. Stay tuned...
September 5, 20187 yr Author Popular Post OK, OddLots/BigLots Ad.... 54" wide. 2 doors, and 2 drawers. At least it isn't something like this.. Glass in the doors.."Walnut wood" ( yeah, right..) has a step front. Boss doesn't like this one..whew! Depending on the size of the insert, will determine the rest of the sizes...need a trip to Menard's, to measure up the insert. Not too sure about them feet....may see about something else...the black parts, IIRC, are metal brackets..bolted in place...we can do better...

Looks like the "fix" is now within reach. 1 hour ago, steven newman said: Stay tuned... Tuned 24/7...scary huh?
September 5, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Managed to go into BigLots today.....wasn't fun....they are sealing cracks in the parking lot...fresh, sticky tar. had to go back out, and get the pen and paper I forgot the first trip in.....most of the measurements are in. It isn't all that big. Stands 36" tall, and is 54" long. The "drawers"? Are fake. Adjustable shelves. Could do the door as a Frame & Panel? may do different hinges, too. Not sure I like that thick base/floor...I think I can do better Hmm..ah..NOPE, this ain't happening. Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is working on the details, right now.....Solid panel for the ends? Maybe, maybe not. 36"T x 16"W? we'll see. May lose the fake drawer. feet are only 2-3" tall......may get raised up...as part of the side glue ups....like on that 3 drawer chest of drawers I had just made. Need to make a few webframes, and a pair of center uprights...or...maybe not. Different hinges, BTW. Don't like the Euro ones. Too much like Ikea stuff. Once I find out how tall the boss wants this...I can start gluing up the end panels. May just glue up the two in the middle, as well. This may take a while...stay tuned...

September 5, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm...Boss wants this at 41" tall. I need to add a strip to the two board glue-up for the sides....as the planks are about as straight as me fingers....May dig up the chalk box, and "snap a few lines" and then joint and glue up the end panels....That might take a day...(just to find the dang box)
September 5, 20187 yr Author Have 5 planks to move to the shop. May just let them sit a spell, while I rest up. May have located the chalk box...and the chalk. Always use blue..as the RED will not wipe off....even on wet concrete. need them trimmed to about 41" long....doesn't need to be too square on the ends. Will take care of THAT, once the glue up is done....
September 5, 20187 yr Author Popular Post My back has said "STOP" for today.... And..these were the shortest of the 8 boards....measured down to 41", or so.. So the worst of each plank was the cutoff....As much as I like handsaws...I am in no mood for them right now.. Used two scraps and the clamp.... Doesn't have to be 100% perfectly cut....will tidy that up, after the panel is glued up...Choose the "best" of the five, and snapped a couple lines... Bandsaw wanted to follow the grain..seemed afraid of getting any of this blue stuff on it....I set the other 4 aside, for now... And went to work on the filler strips.. Used this little jointer, among other planes....some areas were really bad..couple of jack planes were also used.. Hey, it IS a Jack plane, after all. Got both edges close to straight...laid one down on each of the wider planks, and marked a straight(er) edge line...then stacked each up, as i went, whew.. Then laid out three parts, to give an idea of what the sides will be like.. Something like this? need to joint the edges of the two wider boards, to get rid of the gaposis....some other day...back is about as stiff as these boards are..besides, I was dripping on the lumber. That will be about it, for today...
September 6, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Just can't quit, I guess ....decided a change in planes was in order. Instead of the 10 pounder..down sized a bit...to an 8 pounder plane. Got both planks to sit without gaps on a middle strip....Decided to try a few clamps and some glue... I did use the #62 to get things close, then the #7c to flatten the entire length. Spread a bead, moosh the next part around til it "sticks in place", spread a bead, and do it again. Clamp in the middle first, then the ends I wanted this end to be as straight and flat as I could, used a caul and a few clamps to pull things into line. other end had a caul, just to keep things in line...as i'll be cutting a foot profile at that end. Did make a mess, but not too much.. And no big, black, fuzzy spiders, either. We did have a brown Recluse, but it was hanging on the OUTSIDE of a window screen. Maybe by tomorrow evening, I can get the other side panel into the clamps? Stay tuned..
September 6, 20187 yr Popular Post Steve, thanks for the story and pictures. I know you are tried so have a beer or two and rest up.

Slipped itself right in the mix of things as if it had always been there. Appears it knows it's way around a board when it has an 'ole pro at the wheel. 18 minutes ago, steven newman said: And no big, black, fuzzy spiders, either. Wolf Spider(s) most likely...basically harmless but pretty creepy looking. 19 minutes ago, steven newman said: We did have a brown Recluse, but it was hanging on the OUTSIDE of a window screen. That's not even a good place for them. Their bite is far worse than their "bark!" Bug bomb them, then stomp 'em good a few times. 22 minutes ago, steven newman said: Stay tuned.. I'll do my best...reception gets a little fuzzy every now and again.
September 7, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Computer issues this morning, was locking up....restarts ( 4 !) took a while....decided to get a few items done in the shop... Unclamped side #1...went ahead and jointed the outside edges.. used these two. Set aside the panel, and went to work on #2.. Goal was to get rid of the high spots, until these low ones shine up...checking for gaps And making sure the filler strip doesn't rock. Got both of the 1 x 6s with a jointed edge....spread some glue.. gaps at this end will go away, when the foot profile is cut out...Three planks, just sitting there, held by the glue alone... Like before, center clamp went on first..then the end clamps, then a caul on each end. Panel #1 is sitting back there, rest on a scrap....rather than the floor....keeping it away from any creeks that may happen. Was a busy morning? Floor WAS clean, before I started in...need to do some drawings...and figure out the webframes and the divider set ups. Stay tuned....
September 7, 20187 yr Author Giving the Boonie hat a rest....the "black hat" is my "walking out" hat.... Both T-shirts were too tight around the neck. Computer is back up and running, for now. Windows 7 May need some help, getting this thing out of the shop, when it does get done....
