I took one of the Laguna's..it fit perfect...wore it to volleyball match, errands and to Wal-Mart already. Oldest grandson wore "his" Patriot Woodworker t-shirt to school today...didn't know it until he was walking out the door so no pics this time. He had Cub-Scouts tonight so he changed shirts.

September 8, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Decided to kill a little time, before the Buckeyes game....got panel #2 out of the clamps. Jointed one edge....then the "fun" began.. Decided to clamp both panels together, in an attempt to get them to match each other...going to be a LONG day.. Just a little off the top? Decided a rougher approach was needed.. An older jack plane, set a bit deeper than the others...took a while but got it down to where the fancier planes could work.. The Fancy jack and this plane took over.. Yeah, going to be one of THOSE days...sides were now matched....how about the ends? One end was marked as TOP...needed to make both tops the same.. Used the big square to set up the jig...something wasn't coming out right...cut wasn't going too great....saw was acting funny...checked the lines.. A little off? May need to buy a new square. I don't think I can trust this one, anymore. Had to go back and recut both panels....and start again. #62 was used to trim the sawn edges straight. Set one panel aside..and worked with a few other tools....until I could make this cut.. Hey, it IS a Vintage saw, right? Used this to lay out the other panel..( which is when I noticed the un-square ends...) I could then set the pair aside... They do match each other. Decided NOT to leave these sit on the floor...just in case. Didn't want them to float away.. Set these two back on the bench, and then clamped them together....they were bowed a bit. Clamps should be able to flatten the bow, maybe Was a tad high in the middle...used this as a scrub plane to level the middle a bit...almost kick-off...toes were cramping up, anyway..time to stop? Well, MAYBE I can figure out what frames to build, to connect these two sides....1" overhang on each end for the top...from the 54" long top....3/4" thick ends.. Hmmm..need more toes for this "New Math"...50-1/2" sound about right? Webframes need to be 1/4" narrower than the sides...for the plywood back. Dividers need a strip added to one edge..They MAY go all the way to the floor, except at the top. Full length frame, with rails to attach the dividers to? Need to re-boot the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up....and see what I can draw out on paper... Stay tuned ( Go Bucks!)
September 9, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Have about a page and a half done on a set of Plans....will post when I have a better drawing done. But, I can start building web frames (2) and cutting the two dividers to length. May use the three planks of Ash as face frame parts....and buy a few more for the top...need to draw up a plan for the webframes....they get a couple extra rails, and the dividers go in the center of the rail..top and bottom...I can add fixed shelves where needed, later. Will add a 2 x 6 under the bottom frame, as a center support/foot ( hate when wide cabinets sag in the middle) May cut a curve in that, as well. That is about all the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has come up with....need to write this down.... before Boris steals the "Plan"
September 9, 20187 yr Like the curve layout design detail on the end pieces. Not too bad day from my vantage point IMO. I did watch two different episodes of Roy Underhill today...Older repeats, but he was comparing both the #45 7 functions against dedicated wooden molding planes of various types. Reminded me of an episode a couple Saturday's ago of the Wiley Wapakoneta Woodworker's
September 9, 20187 yr Popular Post I thought the episode of the 45 & 55 were great, especially when he described the difference between them: "well, the 55 is 10 more".
September 9, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Sat down a bit ago, with some plan making stuff. . Remember the pen? Some of the plan was drawn last night.. Was done with the shop pencil. Shows where the frames will go, where the two dividers will sit, and where the center foot will be... Today's scratchin's.. Details of the webframes. Corner blocks to attach the top with. Rails to attach the dividers to. Frame for the bottom will get a fifth rail, to attach the 2 x 6 foot to the case. Frames will get screwed to the side panels. So, now I have to take the paperwork to the shop, along with.. At least the pine stuff, to build the frames...Ash will get used for the "show" parts (lots of ripping to do) May even bring these two along... Dividers. Will need add-ons along the edges.... Might be a busy day, today? Might be warmer in the shop, they are calling for a HIGH of 60 outside....brrrrrr. Depending on the cussing levels...I MIGHT get something done, today? Stay tuned...
September 10, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok...this may be a long post....was that kind of a day... Got the 50-1/2" long stiles cut, and 9 rails.....Stanley #2246 Mitre box did most of the work... Wasn't too long, before I shed this thing....leftovers..will get back to those in a bit... Got out the mortise jig... Had to reset the jig...was still set up for thicker boards. The "set up"....backsaw was used on the end mortises...and a chisel.. As for the middle two mortises.. Just a chisel...until the tenon fits.. Tenons...yep, already made, and ready to go... All nine rails..done. Anyway, got one stile done.. Then clamped side 2 to it, and transferred some marks.. Then repeat chopping four holes...then used a saw to make some corner blocks.. Well, at least one...needed a pattern for 8 blocks like these... Was all set to clamp and glue....no screws? Well, until I get go and buy a few....drilled a few holes... Then took a break, to catch up on the football games...then a trip to Wall E World....came back with a couple packs of screws... Set up the glue and clamp this mess together, and add the blocks.. That rail at the far end...was upside down....reversed it..and it fit a lot better....corner blocks had a pair of screws, and glue About the only drill/driver I have for these tight spots.. Is this impact driver.... I think that will do for one day...worn out a bit. Tomorrow is a trip to the doctor's office, to check up on the surgery...shop will be closed. Maybe Tuesday, I can get the bottom frame done? Stay tuned... Edited September 10, 20187 yr by steven newman
September 10, 20187 yr Far more productive than I was today...appreciate the pictures and progress story. 15 minutes ago, steven newman said: Tomorrow is a trip to the doctor's office, to check up on the surgery...shop will be closed. Safe travels and prayers for a positive check-up. Goes without saying the shop will be closed...it is Monday after-all.
September 10, 20187 yr Author Doctor's visit turned into a Wellness Check up.....seems I am distressingly ..healthy. Next check up is in 6 months. Debating on going to the shop....will see how things go..after Lunch.

Debating on going to the shop Great news...glad all went well and hopefully no more Dr. visits until next year! As for going to the shop, wouldn't push your luck...it still is Monday after all.
September 10, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Boredom can be a great motivator....Ok, those mortises on the ends of the frames? How about a class? Used the tenon of the rail that will go here, to lay out the mortise.. Backsaw to cut as much as I can...the drag the toe through the cut a few times, to deepen the back.. Then a mortise chisel, to dig a hole...but.. I use this chisel, bevel up, to pop the waste out.. Until the tenon fits. One done, three more of these to do....Had 6 of the other kind to do.. Laid out.. Chopped out.. And fitted...repeat as needed.. Five holes done ( I am getting better at marking which goes where) repeat for the other stile.. Had to swing this mess around, AFTER I cut and drilled 8 corner blocks ( middle doesn't get any) Needed 5 clamps...only had 4...well, after those corner blocks are installed.. I can move a clamp a bit...set this mess aside..needed the bench cleared... After all the issues with the other square,,found one that IS square...1 x 12s needed to be 33-1/2" long...had to cut around a few bad spots. Bug tracks? Didn't see any bugs, though. The 1 x 12' are a tad too narrow...cut a few strips of 1 x 2 x 33-1/2".. A little wider than needed, I can rip the excess off, as need be...one divider done.. Second one decided to just hang out a while...lookee at all them clamps Well, since the corner blocks are doing their job..I can reuse the clamps.. 2 sides, 2 frames, and the one divider...getting about time to assemble this thing? Well, I do have to use either the #78 or the #45..easier to mill a rebate for the plywood back to sit in...sitting here..peeling dried glue off of me fingers..again. Stay tuned ( see what happens when I get bored?)

September 12, 20187 yr Author Popular Post And Tuesday kicked mine Got the glue-ups out of the clamps today..after I did a bit of shopping.. Since the last set has been broken. Brought the Stanley 45 box to the shop.. The "mallet" is just that red handled rawhide one, that I was using the other day. Black taped the handle and the head. Put both of this away..for now. The other box? Will need one of these out, later. Marked eack glued up panel to it's final width...circular saw to rip the excess off...then plane the saw marks.. How much was ripped off? About..that much. Add-ons were slightly off in thickness, too. what these two planes couldn't plane flat.. The Old No. 7c could... How well did it do? Seemed to do a decent enough job..made a mess on the floor, too.. Dividers were done..laid a frame on the bench.. Marked a center line. Drilled a few holes...without hitting the board below.. Just slide the frame a bit. Brace has a countersink bit. Did all this to both frames, where the dividers will go. Attached the dividers to one frame, set the assembly on the floor, and attached the other frame. Then, stood it up on end. Set a side panel on top, to see which edge I wanted to rebate, and then set up the Wards ( Stanley) #78.. Depth of cut was about 1/4", set to the thickness of a plywood panel...width was about..5/8" or so...and started peeling Ash.. Full width, full length...takes a lot of these... And a lot of wax. Learned a new grip on the plane...thumb isn't sore, either ( grabbed it like an old wood bodied plane) Finally got to the depth stop.. Plywood scrap says this is deep enough...and I am plumb tuckered out...decided a dry fit, to show how far along ( isn't much?) this thing is.. C clamped the two sides to the frame assembly. Sitting on it's own four feet. Rail in the center will get some more "feet" added. To prevent a saggy middle Was soaked clear through, even with the fan on me. Headed upstairs to find the Gatorade jug. Didn't even sweep the Ash shavings up... Maybe tomorrow, I can rebate the other side panel? Then see about ripping parts for a face frame? Shelves? Doors? Fixed shelves, or movable? Was a "Busy, busy...BUSY" day....may have got a little bit done? Stay tuned..

Oohh, a new cordless broom set...and a red one to boot...'oughta' be able to find it...I keep hiding from myself my gray one similar to that. 8 minutes ago, steven newman said: Was a "Busy, busy...BUSY" day....may have got a little bit done? I'd have to agree...all I did was ride a mower for 3-1/2 hours...Turn Left, Turn Right...repeat as required...at least you had some fun. Looking forward to the next episode...hopefully my subscription is paid up.
September 12, 20187 yr Author Computer issues this morning..in fact, about anything with a cord ( and the cell phone) were wonky...computer was doing a self-repair of some sort.... While the Gremlins got sorted out...decided to get a little more done, in the shop...hauled three planks to the shop.. I almost used these three to make the top of the case...but, like the rest of the stuff this morning..there were "issues" ( blame it all on Hurricane Flo?) Knotty? Had another plank in the stack, almost as bad... And, number three had a couple knots along the edge. I think I can work around the worst of these..by cutting parts for the face frame. The one with the edge knots, can be used along the bottom of the case..IF a few fancy cuts are made. Trimmed one end square....saw was having issues following a line, so, a speedsquare was set up, to guide it on it's merry way.. Then turn this end for end, mark out to 52-1/2" strong, reset the jig, and cut the big knot off....got out the layout toys.. Had a few curves and straights to mark up. Took 3 tries, to find a SHARP sabre saw blade for the old Green B&D one...then it was a matter of clamp, cut. move, reclamp, cut, move, reclamp....reached the center....turn board around, repeat the above moves....then stand this thing up.. Then, to get this thing out of the way, so I could mill more parts, I just set it over by the case.. Something like this?the other two boards were cut to length...one at 40" long, the other at 52-1/2" strong. The 40" board was ripped to provide 2 stiles @ 3/4" x 2" x 40" long. Edges jointed straight...the longer board was ripped right down the middle (or somewhat close to that) to make the top rail. 3/4"x 3" x 52-1/2" or so.. The longer part could be held by the bench's crochet...and the leg vise Set the one end into the crochet, and hit the other end with a mallet, to tighten things down.. Plane? It is an Ohio Tool Co. No. 0-7 seemed to do a decent enough job.. About as old as the other No. 7 in the shop. Set the jointed top rail onto the stiles. Still working out a joint to use.. Hmm...may do just a plain, old 1/2 Lap joint? At least this is a start. Electronics upstairs are all fixed ( meh) Photos processed. Sitting in front of a fan, sipping a Gatorade with ice. Have a Road Trip in a little bit...to use the fellow's planer ( my old lunchbox planer) and buy a couple more sticks of Ash. Been one of "THOSE" days.....stay tuned...
