Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners January 31, 2018

Featured Replies

Wow, January is in the books already! I spent the afternoon with the Electronics Technology kids while their instructor was away from the school.

@Gene Howe posted a picture of a fantastic turning he saw-

This is a functioning chess game. Several of our turners added their comments here-

@Smallpatch posted a picture of a leg turning he did as a replacement for a damaged one.

Jesse explains what he did here, along with an additional image-

Last week @Steve Krumanaker showed us an ornament stand he created for a customer. Steve updated that post with additional images of the stand with the hummingbird ornaments displayed-

@DAB turned a couple of really beautiful bowls. He told us the wood is from his scrap pile. Pretty awesome scraps, Douglas!!

Check out his post-

Speaking of bowls, @kmealy posted a picture of a bowl done by his friend. I've seen bowls similar and they are fascinating-

Check his post for the discussion about how these can be made-

@Gerald is still working on his Beads Of Courage bowls. He shows us a picture of the one on which he is currently working

Check his post for a look at the new tool he is making-

When I purchased my first lathe, I also bought a book on turning by Ernie Conover. I didn't know any turners and we didn't have a woodworking club in this area so all my beginning knowledge came from the book and its' illustrations. Recently, I found this video by Mr. Conover on turning a natural edge bowl. It is interesting to get his take on the bowl and the procedure he uses.  If you have never tried one of these, this is a good staring video-

I noticed that Mr. Conover was wearing an odd looking device around his neck. Turns out it was a type of respirator. Not sure I would want this type but if you are interested here's a link to more information-

@Steve Krumanaker Has been working on making a "Cube Within a Cube". He has 2 videos up about the process. What make this different is that Steve is doing it on the lathe. Typically these are done on a drill press.

The basement shop has been so cold that the finish I put on the latest turning isn't drying properly. Brought it upstairs to see if that helps. Needed to get it away from the dust so I can make an inertia sander. Bought the bearing and sleeve from Capt. Eddie.

Safe turning

Holy cow, a whole lot of turning going on here!:P

Another great weekly update Lew. Thanks...

I guess I didn't realize that was a real chess game, amazing1 Good job again Lew!

Steve

Don't know where you find these videos but keep them coming.

Nice work Lew.  I noticed the shop is colder this week too.  Put a vest on and solved that problem  Just enough extra heat saver.

Lew does good work!

Just watched the Live Edge Bowl video with Ernie Conover.  The technique he used to mount it to the face plate was intriguing.  There are many ways to mount items without a chuck and this is one I haven't seen before.  Liked it.

@Steve Krumanaker Good job on the videos. I like the PIP with the second camera. What kind of software are you using to do these?

Hi Gerald

I use Cyberlink Powerdirector, I think the current release 16. It's affordable and there are tons of youtube videos on using it. The second camera is something I'm just learning to do but the program makes it easy to sync more than one camera.
