Gene Howe Posted August 8, 2017 Report Posted August 8, 2017 Yes, Eddie was a great friend to one and all. And a darned good woodworker, too. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him. He was of the Jewish faith, yet his signature was " Jesus is alright with me." An Israeli flag hung on one wall of the shop and Old Glory on the opposite wall. He was a great guy. RIP, Eddie. Popular Post steven newman Posted August 8, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 8, 2017 I have those two pups from Eddie, as a reminder..... Ok, sitting here, peeling dried glue off the fingers....must have done something this morning... The part that was from the failed dovetails top rail. Cut-off was then cut in half, turned around and glued back onto the bottom edge. Rest of the sockets went a little bit better... Added a few counterbores, and pilot holes....then glue and screws. Then I could make the top rail, and use a cut-off from it for a little piece.. This goes between the two top drawers....I had a better idea for this one.... This way, I only had to chop half as far into the rails. Just glue for this one...finally was able to stand this up on the floor.. Need plugs made, a few holes to fill I find the plug cutter after a while, and cut a bunch of plugs ( Walnut, or..maple?) and then maybe a little work on a top? have to wait on the weekend, to buy a sheet of 1/4" plywood. Needs a back, and the rest for drawer bottoms. Starting to look like...something..... Stay tuned.. LarryS, HARO50, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote

steven newman Posted August 8, 2017 Author Report Posted August 8, 2017 Got bored....decided to work on the top for a bit....slab of 4/4 Maple....13-1/8" wide, 49" long? Try carrying that down the steps..... Had a slight cup to it, and needed it to be 3/4" thick....had the technology ... #5 Jack plane, with an 8" radius-ed iron......I got one face flat, and ankle deep in shavings.. And this was only half? My "Get-up-n-go" soon got up and went. Hmmmmmm I finished one face, nice and flat and smooth. Marked a centerline right down the middle. I also marked a large "X" across the line Circular saw to cut right on the line, Jointed the edges. Bandsaw to rip three strips of walnut, 1" or so wide. Stood those on edge, and made a glue up... Curly Maple, with Walnut stripes. May see about adding a strip on each end, as well. I think thay will be quite enough for one day......time for a cold one? Yep...good decision on those and the walnut strips in the top. I vote for strips on the end too if it doesn't make the top too wide. I can't wait to see so what are the drawer fronts going to be...maple? walnut? or?? Regardless, you make sure and get the young 'uns to carry this thing up the steps when it's time... Protect that back! Yours, I'm speaking about. Edited August 8, 2017 by Grandpadave52 steven newman and HARO50 2 Quote

The ex-fancy one is now the bottom rail.. Well at least you didn't do like I did once. Was so proud of myself- until I realized what I had done. Popular Post steven newman Posted August 9, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 9, 2017 Wednesdays can be a killer.....I am plumb tuckered out.....did not get much done today...for me, anyway Had to dig around, and find a strange looking tool.. Had to remove the bit, and the stuck-in-place "plunge base" Had to find the correct edge guide, too. Couldn't find the OEM wrench, had to make do. WD40 to help get things set up.... Got everything almost set up....had to adjust the "new" bit.. Hey, it's been a few years since I have used these things, ok? Had to add a bit of lumber to one side of a board....after I had trimmed the ends square.. Then spent an hour planing down the high spots. Once the faces were flat, and square, then the extra lumber was added... The Stanley 45 does not do this type of groove.. Resaw to make to pieces for the bread board ends.. Was going to use Walnut..wasn't thick enough. Had a chunk I had cut off from the slab. It still matched the thickness...plus a hair. Dug out the old router table...set up the same router bit in the router that was still in the table (more WD40...) set the height ( 2 tries) and the fence ( lost track of the count..) Charles Neil was testing stains on this slab... anyway, I snuck up on the size needed, a few dry fits ( most were too thick..) Had to use a chisel to clean the groove a bit, block plane to clean the tail......finally got to where it would slide without breaking anything....added a spot of glue, and drove the part in.. One done, one to go....once both ends were done, I could lay this thing onto the bench, level the ends to match the rest of the panel ( found a few more high spots IN the panel) sander to round the corners of the breadboards. Set this thing aside.. Not too hateful? As for the dovetail joints.. Might need a little work? Needed a way to attach this to the case..dug out some pine scraps.. Glued and screwed in place. Cut a slot, with a drill bit.. To allow for the top to move a bit, if needed. Had to shorten a few screws...Had the top on the bench, "Good Side" down. Placed the case on top of the top..and centered things up. Added the screws ( they get hot when you shorten them with a grinder.) This is the back of the case...needs a plywood back...this weekend. Got this oversized load OFF my bench.. Starting to take shape? I think I know where thatplug cutter was stashed....need to dig it up, and make a few plugs....Walnut, or Maple? We'll see what I can use. Might start hauling lumber down to the shop, and see what I have for drawer parts.....hmmmm there is still one more 1 x 4 Walnut plank upstairs... Stay tuned.....for the next episode of the Dungeon Follies HARO50, Grandpadave52, p_toad and 2 others 5 Quote
Grandpadave52 Posted August 10, 2017 Report Posted August 10, 2017 I love that top! It is going to be gorgeous when you apply the finish. I like the way you cut out the front apron too. Good to see you using a router...See power tools aren't all that bad. steven newman 1 Quote
steven newman Posted August 10, 2017 Author Report Posted August 10, 2017 Hauled a few boards to the shop today... The ones on top are to be drawer sides....blanks for the fronts are laid out....one was cut down for the top two drawers.. Found that Plug Cutter....and made a few plugs in Walnut.. And rehabbed that red plane. The top two drawer fronts were tuned up for size.....bandsaw still can't follow a straight line.. Hope the grain shows up a bit....cut from a single board, trying to make it look like it flows around the divider.. Dark spot on the left is just a shadow... The board below I THOUGHT was Maple...turned out to be Poplar...will now be drawer sides... So, Number 4 became Number 3.....Had a problem with the next drawer front.. Part of it wanted to split off....so I merely took it off, added some glue, and a few clamps Not sure how much will remain, when this is sized to the opening..... Could not find a chunk of Maple wide enough for a drawer front....the only one long enough, needed a little strip added to it.. So, I have these two in the clamps until tomorrow. Maybe I can start on the sides then? Back was starting to hurt...time to stop for the day....Plug cutter came from Veritas. and runs best in a drill press Have the speed in the #5 notch...fast as it can go. At one time, the cutter was a brass colour.....I think I wore that off... Not sure how much I do tomorrow....may have some errands to run. Stay tuned.. HARO50, p_toad and Chips N Dust 3 Quote

steven newman Posted August 13, 2017 Author Report Posted August 13, 2017 Bandsaw is downNeeds torn down, cleaned up, new tires installed, maybe a new motor.....will try to get by on the OEM motor, for now. Plywood is in the shop for the back and the drawer bottoms....also picked up 10 "White Birch" knobs, and some pads for the stile's feet. Need the bandsaw to cut the tails for the dovetailed drawers....I do have a "back-up" IF needed.... Plan for today? Get that Bandsaw up and running.....then try to make a couple drawers. Need to change the cutter on the Stanley 45, to match the thickness of the plywood. Might just work on the back of the case, and the top two drawers...depends on what the Boss has scheduled for today( I might go and hide IN the shop..) HARO50 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted August 14, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 14, 2017 Finally got the bandsaw up and running.....barely. Needs a starter to get up to speed, before I turn the motor on....after that, saw runs great. Ok..none of the side pieces are tall enough to match the drawer fronts....no biggie,,,had a plan to use when the drawers are all glued up. Ugly, but usable. These two were at least close to each other in size....jointed the edges.. Had one that was a tad off on one end.. as for the front, it needed a bit of plane work, to get a straight edge.. Then I could layout some pins.. Got out the usual suspects.. Once I carried the layout lines around, to where I could see them...old school time.. Then set up to do some chopping.. tried this block for the one end...meh, wanted to bounce and wiggle too much.....somehow got this done.. Got to about here, and flipped it over... Then went and completed the pins on the other end.....somehow..I lost a pin? this end has 6 pins,,the other end came out with 5? Used the pins to layout for the tails. made sure I marked which part went where....been know to confuse things.. This is why I needed the bandsaw running. Then, just like the pins, I chopped from both faces. Dry fit? Been out of practice....About normal for the first corners....second one was much better.. Plan right now? I'll make a filler strip to glue onto the top of the sides....I'll set up this old plane.. to cut the grooves for the drawer bottoms. Rather than switch cutters back and forth....I'll do the dados for the back with the mitre saw. It will cut the side walls for the dados, then a chisel to pop out the waste. Nice part about today's work? I get to sit down, most of the time. Stay tuned.. Al B, lew, HARO50 and 2 others 5 Quote
