A hollow form is hollowed out such as a vase. Usually with a top opening smaller than the rest of the turning , such as a 2inch opening on a form with a body diameter of 4 inches.

 

Both of these are hollow forms, but with very different shapes. Yes both are hollowed with turning tools of various shapes as the whole inside of one liek the second cannot be done with one tool. Usually would require 3: a straight cutter , a swan neck tool, and a collar tool.

Kind of like BS instead of band saw or TS instead of table  saw.  What if he would have just used HF?

It's simple really, a vase can sell for 20 or 30 dollars. A hollow form? Well now, they go much higher! Don't even think about vessels.

If you fished from a vessel made on a lathe you wouldn't know fore from aft.

OK, at first I thought I was on a hunt for for a "sky hook" but the pictures cleared that up.

HF would have sent me looking in the tool store in Austintown plaza.

This picture reminds me of one of the biggest missed opportunities in my life I think. I was stationed at NAS Jax, in Jacksonville Fl. Part of my duty as a Naval airman was to service transient aircraft as they passed through. This particular day we were expecting a Sikorsky sky crane to pick up an A-4 shell to be transported to Orlando for a static display.

The big bird came in and eventually everything was hooked up and it was ready to leave. This wasn't something that happened every day and of course we were all outside to watch him go. We watched as he headed out over the St. Johns River, someone said something to me and I looked away. Someone else yelled "HE DROPPED IT". I looked back and the plane was gone, already sinking in the river. Someone told us, the flaps had been left down on the plane, as it was just  a shell the plane was very light and actually had started flying up toward the helicopter, then it would fall back, setting up a kind pendulum effect. The pilot was losing control and guillotined  the cable and released the plane. With the cable still attached it made the plane sink very quickly.

I have wished I hadn't look away hundreds of times over the years. As that happened back in the early 70's I've pretty much forgotten it, now and then though, something reminds me. Thanks Stick If I didn't know better I'd say that's the plane I almost saw fall in the river.

Maybe they learned from your experience and the chute out the back of this one stabilizes it.

Dan, the chute is normal procedure and is there for stability, kind of like a sea anchor on a raft. It's primary function is to keep a tethered plane pointed in the right direction. Much smaller than a normal drag chute. I don't believe that the A-4's ever had a drag chute for braking.

Reminds me of the big unit they had here to lift the A/C up onto the roof of the school building...   No need for a shower that day with plenty of wash...

Here is a mesquite hollow form.  I call it Canopic Mesquite because it's mesquite wood and it's shaped like a canopic jar (that's the container that the ancient Egyptians put their gizzard and other entrails in when they croaked.  Supposedly they would need them when they crossed over the Styx to the happy hunting grounds ... or something like that.

 

This was a collaboration between me and the mesquite borers.  It is about 16½ inches tall and 9 inches diameter.

 

Stick, I am deeply saddened to hear that you have been deprived of brisket barbeque all your life.  Up north they spell it barbecue so no wonder ...

since you turners have a language all yur own I was figuring  brisket per a turner was something all together different than grub....
