The WoodRiver® No. 4 Bench Hand Plane is well suited for smoothing smaller surfaces or maneuvering around troublesome grain. Slightly longer than a block plane, the tote makes it more comfortable for extended use. No. 4, a smoothing plane, takes the thinnest shavings for an exceptional finish. Used skillfully, it can be the final step before finishing. It also makes an excellent general-purpose plane or first plane for your collection. We have two of these bench planes for two lucky recipients. One is currently donated by our sponsor Woodcraft, and the second is donated by our Patriot Woodworker Peter Tomlinson. We'd like to give a special thanks to @p_toad for his generous give back to our community, he declined his bench plane prize in last years Christmas project and wanted to give back to our military by donating his tool back for this project, thank you Peter!-

I saw our Flag today, The colors were faded looking a little tired but still standing strong and proud in the summer wind. It reminded me of the Sons and Daughters of yesterday’s America who stood for my freedom years before I was born free in America. Over time many may have faded away but the glory and honor of their service to America will never fade. I saw our Flag today it flew bravely in the wind a bit tattered and worn but it's colors still strong , and proud over America. It flies for the Sons and Daughters of America who fought for my freedom, battle tested and hardened to stand against the forces that would take away my freedom. Like a battle flag they too stand in great pride and honor, battle scared , proud and selfless in their dedication to America and the freedom they protected. I saw a flag today. The colors were bright, strong and proud as it embraced in silence and great honor a fallen hero. An American Hero who stood up and made a commitment to duty, to our America and gave all to insure countless generations will live on in American freedom. Born in freedom and fallen in battle they will ever rest in the arms and hearts of a free and grateful America. I saw a flag pole today. It flew no glory but stood silently in the wind empty and alone for the absence of our colors. It reminded me of the Sons and Daughters of America who stood for my freedom who have yet to come home to the America they honorably served. America can only be completely free when every one of her Sons and Daughters of Freedom can come home, home to the America and the freedom they gave all to protect. Thank you American Heroes......On this Veterans Day and every day......I will never forget that I get to be here forever free because you were there for my freedom. Thank you for our freedom and the greatness of our America.

Teddy Sheean's Valour in Armidale's Final Moments
John Morris posted a topic in The Veterans Corner and Causes Forum
I found this a very interesting read, hope you enjoy it too. Teddy Sheean The painting by artist Dale Marsh that captures Teddy Sheean's valour in Armidale's final moments. He was later awarded the Victoria Cross. Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean was born on 28 December 1923 at Lower Barrington, Tasmania, fourteenth child of James Sheean, labourer, and his wife Mary Jane, née Broomhall. Soon afterwards the family moved to Latrobe. Teddy was educated at the local Catholic school. Five foot 8½ inches (174cm) tall and well built, he took casual work on farms between Latrobe and Merseylea. In Hobart on 21 April 1941 he enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve as an Ordinary Seaman, following in the steps of five of his brothers who had joined the armed forces (four of them were in the Army and one in the Navy). On completing his initial training, he was sent to Flinders Naval Depot, Westernport, Victoria, in February 1942 for further instruction. In May Sheean was posted to Sydney where he was billeted at Garden Island in the requisitioned ferry Kuttabul, prior to joining his first ship as an Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun loader. Granted home leave, he was not on board Kuttabul when Japanese midget submarines raided the harbour and sank her on 31 May. Eleven days later he returned to Sydney to help commission the new corvette HMAS Armidale (I), which carried out escort duties along the eastern Australian coast and in New Guinea waters. Ordered to sail for Darwin in October, Armidale arrived there early next month. On 29 November Armidale sailed for Japanese-occupied Timor, in company with the corvette HMAS Castlemaine, to withdraw the exhausted Australian 2/2 Independent Company, evacuate about 150 Portuguese civilians and 190 Dutch troops, and land soldiers to reinforce Dutch guerrillas on the island. Arriving off Betano before dawn on 1 December, the ships rendezvoused with the naval tender HMAS Kuru, which had already taken the civilians on board. When these people were transferred to Castlemaine, she sailed for Darwin, leaving the other two vessels to carry out the rest of the operation. From 12:28 Armidale and Kuru came under repeated attack from Japanese aircraft. Despite requests, no air cover was received. Shortly before 14:00 on 1 December 1942, Armidale, by then separated from Kuru, was attacked by no less than thirteen aircraft. The corvette manoeuvred frantically. At 15:15 a torpedo struck her port side and another hit the engineering spaces; finally a bomb struck aft. As the vessel listed heavily to port, the order was given to abandon ship. The survivors leapt into the sea and were machine-gunned by the Japanese aircraft. Once he had helped to free a life raft, Sheean scrambled back to his gun on the sinking ship. Although wounded in the chest and back, the 18-year-old sailor shot down one bomber and kept other aircraft away from his comrades in the water. He was seen still firing his gun as Armidale slipped below the waves. Only 49 of the 149 men who had been on board survived the sinking and the ensuing days in life rafts. Sheean was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery and in 1999 HMAS Sheean, a Collins Class submarine, was named after him - the only ship in the RAN to bear the name of a junior sailor. In 2020, following a sustained public campaign to have Ordinary Seaman Sheean’s selfless actions appropriately recognised, an expert panel recommended to the Australian Government that he be considered for the the award of a Victoria Cross. On 12 August 2020 His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia announced that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had approved a posthumous award of the Victoria Cross to Ordinary Seaman Sheean. In doing so, Ordinary Seaman Sheean became the first member of the Royal Australian Navy to be awarded Australia's highest honour for valour. On 1 December 2020, 78 years to the day since the death of Ordinary Seaman Sheean and the loss of HMAS Armidale, the Governor-General presented the insignia of the Victoria Cross for Australia to Teddy Sheean’s family at a ceremony held at Government House in Canberra, ACT. Served on an aircraft carrier during Vietnam
Larry Schweitzer posted a topic in The Veterans Corner and Causes Forum
I was an officer in the engineering department. Damage control officer on the second cruise. Lots of time at sea but visited some interesting places. Not enough time in Hong Kong, great place though. Couple of months in Japan, never did catch on to the language. Otherwise in & out of Subic. Flew into Danang just to take a look see. Watched a U2 land, crazy. Went through nuclear, biological and chemical warfare training/school. Good thing most people don't know about that stuff. -

Memorial Day, a day of remembrance and honoring those who have put it all on the line and who paid the ultimate price while serving under the flag of The United States of America. I have mixed emotions about this day. As we roll through the daily grind of holding down a day job, we all love to have that "Monday" off and spend it with our families, and with hobbies such as woodworking, boating and camping and many other activities we Americans enjoy during this extended weekend. It's the official kick off to summer as well. But as I walked through the front doors of a major home center this morning looking for some supplies to complete some long standing "Honey-Do" list that I have been trying to knock down for years but just never seems to end, I spot a big colorful sign at the entrance of our local home center and the sign states in big bold happy letters, "HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!". Happy? There is nothing "Happy" about this most solemn of days contained in our annual calender of holidays. What is "Happy" about this day? This one day we are supposed to take time and reflect upon those who gave their life defending our country, and protecting us from the very bad people of this world, happy? What is "Happy" about men and women losing their life before their life even began, many in their teens, and some cases even under aged, yet they wanted to serve our country so bad, they lied about their age to get into the service. What is happy about a day that we are supposed to memorialize dead Americans, most who died for a righteous cause, and many who may not have. There is nothing happy about this day my friends. Sure, my family and I will enjoy our "Monday Off" because we will be with each other, but we will also be attending a function in honor of our dead Americans where the event is sure to be solemn. For my wife and I, we will carry a heavy heart throughout the day, and our children will be encouraged to keep those same sentiments in their hearts as well. Do not think that for one instance if our military was not standing post with rifle in hand, that our enemies would just sit by and do nothing. The only reason we are able to live our lives day in and day out, without worries, able to go about our day to day tasks of visiting a Starbucks before work, seeing a movie with our family, or the simple task of having a restful sleep during the night, all of those simple things we take for granted, are completely owed to those who protect us every day. Lets enjoy the day off, lets enjoy being in company of the ones we love, but the whole while, lets not let the feeling of solemness, and remembrance leave our hearts. We owe those who are no longer with us, that. Just one day is all they are asking. Memorial Day, May 25th 2015. May God always bless the men and women who serve our country, and may He keep in a very special place those who died in service and long after, for they are the ones who gave of themselves selflessly, and they will be "Forever Young". And we'd like to ask each and every one to pray at your barbecue for our troops both past and present, and set out an empty setting over an empty chair at your dinner table, in memory, and in hope that our men and women serving today will all come home very soon.
