    Walnut

I got some walnut today. I should be able to get three bowls out of each one, 16”, 14” and 12”.

    Have you seen

Putting tenons on some sweet gum blanks today. I put this on lathe and notice the rotten spot is squared. Then looked at the end and looks like there was a dowel there. Kinda strange.

    Bowl blank broke

I have this small WO bowl blank I was playing with. It had a crack in it, though I had no idea how deep it went...so I kept turning. Anyway, I had a catch on the bottom of the bowl while I was shaping it and this chunk broke off. Can I glue this back together and continue playing with it? Notice the chunk took out part of the mortise where I would eventually use my chuck to turn this around and hollow it out.
  4. Folks, I was talking to a young man the other day and he sat in on a Native American bowl making class briefly, back on the east coast. He did not remember what this method of bowl making was called, and I am unable to find anything online about the method. The method of carving a bowl by Native Americans goes way back, as old as our land is. Apparently the Natives would take the timber, char or fire the center of the timber (bowl blank) as to make it easier to carve out the center of the bowl because the center is black and soft. They used the same methods for their dugout canoes, burning the center, to soften the timber or log, and dig it out with implements. Has anyone heard of this method of bowl carving? And if so, what's it called so I can research it, thanks!
  5. When I was turning all those lighthouse ornaments I was using pieces of dowel rods. When I chucked them up sometimes they didn't run true. I remembered a trick and used it to get the blank the straightest and therefore using less material. Here is a clip from a video I ran across that shows how it is done.

    Turning plywood?

I found a piece of three quarters plywood and it had no gaps and looked like a top grade piece. I got to wondering if I could turn this piece into a celtic knot. After a lot of cutting and gluing, here is what I have. Any guesses how it will turn?
