I use my marking gauge to mark cut line for the other edge. My kingdom for a panel gauge. Ain't got time to stop and make one. I marked the board as wide as I could and get it parrallel, so all I

Once flat I mark it as the Reference Face. After which I use that Reference Face to flatten and square a Reference Edge. So, in the vise... And it's on. Reference Edge marked. From this

Coming along Mike. Just curious, is this build a current build? I'm trying to keep current with your YouTube build along (just watching) and it seems like this thread is snippets from it?? Anyways, Thanks for the build-along.

BTW, congrats on the new addition to your sawing arsenal aka the Lynx 14" tenon saw. Beautiful looking saw.

Yes. I am posting this as the build goes up. As the steps are completed I will update the thread. I have video scheduled all the way into April, so this thread will be active for quite a while.

As to the Lynx, thanks.

I spent about an hour outside at the bench today with that saw. I put a hand sharpening on it, instead of the machine sharpening it had, and spent a bit of time lessening the set and tuning ti up. It's screaming nice, now.

Kudos to you Mike; thankful you can get out to work.

You must be having much better weather there than on the West coast of Indiana. We did have sunshine today and finally reached 53° but the wind gusts were 50+mph most of the day. Seems every day now when it's warm, it's either pouring rain, the wind blowing at insane levels or both. Those days are preceeded or followed by freezing or below temperatures, no sunshine, wind blowing or a trifecta of those. It's been a looooooooooooooong winter here.

Saw you have some pending with advance dates. I'm following along. Ain't able to do much else right now.

We had 60 mph gusts all day today, but it was 60 degrees. I went out and worked on the saw anyway. Wife thought i was nuts.

But everybody had that deep freeze, and then rain rain rain. So when it warmed up fat boy went out to the bench, lol.

It rained all day yesterday, and the last four or five days we've had three of them like that.

Supposed to go down in the high 20s this week coming in at nights. Hopefully that will be March's last gasp.

I'm ready for Spring to spring, already.

Once we cut the pieces for the side we need to shoot one end.

sdst1.png

The shooting board and bench hook are wonderful tools for hand work. Both side pieces a shot for square and smooth, and brought to exact length with one another.

So now we have the front, rear and side panels for the chest cut to length, perfectly matched with one another, with end grain smooth and square.

See you next time.

Finally got current with this video last night Mike. Thanks.

Been a bit., Sorry, I've got two other YT channels and life sometimes gets in the way as well. I got back to this as soon as I possibly could.

We have the length of the respective pieces finalized, and the pieces are sorted for direction of grain and the look of the piece as much as possible.

Now I need to finalize the height.

I used the wood that i had available to determine the size of this project. So for determining height I simply measured the height of my shortest board, and chose a height just under that. In this case 10 inches will be the height.

So to begin I will mark that height on the board, measuring from the reference edge created in the beginning.

h1.png

h2.png

After which, I use a straight edge and a marking knife to make a definitive mark on the board.

h3.png

Speaking of straight edges, this is personal opinion, but I build a lot of things, including musical instruments. Never once in all the years I've been doing this have I ever needed a precision straight edge of any kind. The only thing close to one that i have ever used is either the edge of my plane, or a machined level. I may one day pick one up, but today is not that day.

All the successive pieces are marked in the same way, sometimes using clamps to help hold the straight edge still, particularly on the longer front and back pieces.

h4.png

Once they are all marked I will saw close to the line with a rip hand saw.

And then plane down to the line.

To mate them all together so that they are exactly the same height, I set them on edge together. In this case using a board I previously flattened, because my bernch is an outside bench, and I do not trust it's flatness....

f1.png

.....and, grabbing them really tight so they won't shift, I transfer them to the vise.

f2.png

Then it's just a matter of planing them flush with one another.

f3.png

Keeping track of square as I go.

And then it's time for glue up.

And clamps.

Checking for squareness

And that will sit overnight.

Thanks for looking in!

Yeah, YT glitches sometimes and you can either be unsubbed or the bots just don't do their job.

Nice job, good looking dovetails.

Unfortunately I'm a very poor YouTube partner. I don't have a channel so I never leave comments just because I don't like my name appearing in print; case of paranoia I guess. (Sorry Mike). I haven't looked into a way really to see if I can post with a pseudo name. Worse yet, I don't click the Notification Bell on the channels I do subscribe mainly to keep my phone from going off at inconvenient times. So if the algorithms don't pop up a new recommended video, I go to my subscription page about once a week to see if there's something new to the channels I may have missed.

That confession made, I really do appreciate the time, energy and effort of Mike (as well as other TPW) members contribute via YouTube. I've tried to subscribe to all of them as well as watch their content on the platform even if it's also posted on TPW. Sorry for derailing the thread.

Keep the posts (and videos) coming Mike!
