Lousy donuts at our Kroger but the best apple fritter in town. Try them

A friend of mine used to manage a Kroger store in Houston.  He told me that a lot of stores have now gone to a quick donut dough, more like a batter.  The idea is to crank them out fast and easy.  From what he said, they are as good as a conventional donut when fresh, but after a few hours they are sub-par donuts.

I think that method is the same as used with the machines that make the mini-donuts at fairs and similar places.  It's a contained, automated donut machine with a kinda river of oil in which they cook, and a water wheel type thing halfway down the river that flips them.  It's fun to watch and when you buy a little bag of mini-donuts they are as fresh as can be and taste great.  Part of the sales method is pulling in guys like me (and kids!) who like to watch this cool machine work :D

Been looking at some North Carolina mountain towns weather and I know it's humid, but they are reporting in at 76 to 86 degrees for their high, and I'm kind of thinking, what's the trade off? 110 dry, or 86 wet? Which is better?

For me, dry heat is manageable up to about 105, though its gotten harder as I've gotten older.  September of 2021 I was installing a new metal roof on my house at ~9000' elevation.  Highs in the mid 80's I would guess, low humidity, but it was still brutal.  I must have been drinking about a gallon a day.

When the humidity is low, I can take a rest and be revived somewhat.  Sweating actually cools you off, so if you take a breather in the shade you can keep going.  Above 105 it's just too hot and even sweating doesn't cool me down.

When the air is humid, I just sweat and don't cool at all.  The sweat doesn't evaporate.

The bigger dilemma might just be that in places where it's hot and dry all the lumber has to come in by train.  I haven't gotten any cheap lumber since a buddy brought back a truckload of cherry from an extended family member's mill in NC (and that was 20 years ago).

Yeah, only one place I've been can even come close to that, and I have a feeling it still wasn't in the same class! :D

Well like the rest of you I've been staying in and doing my best to stay cool.

Last September I started having some pretty severe back pain and tried about everything to get better. My legs went numb and I could hardly walk. Couldn't make it from the house to the mailbox. Did therapy, shots and nothing got me any better. Finally got approval to see the neurologist and I had surgery 6 weeks ago. Haven't been able to lift anything heaver than a donut and cup. LOL. Went back for a checkup today and he said all looks good so I start another round of therapy tomorrow. Four weeks of therapy and then hopefully I'll be released and good as new. After the surgery all the pain was gone and the numbness in my legs was gone. Only wish we could have gotten to that point a little sooner.

Anyway I'm pretty tired of just sitting in the house in a straight back chair so I'm ready to finally get out. For the first 2 weeks after the surgery I couldn't ride in a vehicle. I have been released to drive short distances now. I feel like I've been freed.

Anyway may be fall before I'm back in the shop doing any woodworking.

Sorry to hear this John. Thankful all is going well thus far with recovery. I fully understand every bit of what you're experiencing. Went through almost the same scenario a little over 3 years ago. Unfortunately, I only regained partial feeling in my lower right leg/ foot and part of my left foot. Still have lower back pain most of the time but I've learned to accept it and move (albeit slower) on. It was 72 days from the time of my surgery until I drove again partly because I couldn't get up into my truck along with the numbness in my leg. Hated going to PT 2x/week but it was worth every trip. My Physical Terrorists were the best!

Prayers you continue on your path to a full and complete recovery.

Best wishes to you for a complete recovery John. We've went through this recently (not over yet) with Marie....not fun at all.

Prayers for a quick and total recovery, @John Moody! BT,DT.
