Popular Post steven newman Posted May 23, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 23, 2024 Photos, or it didn't happen? Ok.. After 2 passes..Do all 8 for the 1st pass, move the rip fence blade's width, and run all 8 through, again.. Test fit? Tight fit, should not have a rattles going on... A "Machinery Row"? Did some "Housekeeping" All the scraps and sawdust were removed here..and sent over here.. May have to fire up the Fire Pit later? Will be setting this up, tomorrow.. Back when B&D Routers were all metal, and were clones of DeWalt #610s.. They needed 2 wrenches to change a router bit..currently, there is a 1/4" straight cutter in there...need to install the Dovetail bit..set up the fence a few times...Fence is the same as the Tablesaw's fence...and uses the same "clamps" hanging up off to the right.. Bought Knobs for the drawers, today..had to buy 2 packs.. In order to get 16 knobs...may soak these in Dark Walnut stain..IF I want some contrast...if not? Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman Posted May 23, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 23, 2024 A Little over an hour this morning...and then the shop was too hot to work any more in.. But.. This thing was VERY busy...after I adjusted the stop line.. Needed to go a hair further... Trying to get those skinny pins some people love so much... Took a bit over an hour of work..but.. all 8 drawer fronts have their dovetail sockets done...need to start milling the Tails to match.. Trip to Lowes, to buy three 1 x 4 x 6' CLEAR Pine boards,,,and, they were even straight....will cut those for the 8 drawer backs... Stay tuned..was a busy morning.. HARO50, Fred W. steven newman Posted May 24, 2024 Author Report Posted May 24, 2024 Here's a question....do I mill the tails on the Drawer sides first, or...mill the groove for the drawer's bottom panel first... Either way..I'll need to change the 5/16" cutter for the 1/4" cutter..and set the fence so the groove will match the one in the drawer fronts... Hmmm.. Larry Buskirk, Cal, lew and 1 other 3 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted May 24, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 24, 2024 Ok..when the 3/16" cutter is too wide.. #11 here...Figured I might as well use the 1/4" cutter.. As it is about as narrow a cutter I can use, with BOTH skates on the plane..sharpened it up, centered it on the skates. All set up...decided to widen the grooves on the drawer fronts... Best I could do, as to clamping a drawer front to the bench, and NOT have it moving around.. Wasn't taking all that much out.. The plywood did seem to fit better...without using a mallet, even.. Got 4 drawer fronts "Adjusted" decided to try one drawer side..had to move the "Bench Clamps" a bit.. Lots of Pine Noodles were made..went to the same depth as the drawer fronts.. A look inside the case.. Did you know that these planes came with a screwdriver? Comes in handy, when the bolts are slotted.. And, that was it for tonight...wanted to get the Stanley No. 45 all set up, and ready to go... That plane plane came from Toronto, Canada...by way of Mississippi...the year a few people went down to see William at Vicksburg ...remember, Gene? Sitting here with a Tonic & Gin..trying to cool down..4 drawer fronts re-done, ONE drawer side Done..only 19 more grooves to do... Stay tuned.. Harry Brink, Fred W. Popular Post steven newman Posted May 24, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 24, 2024 1000hrs start time this morning..Quitting Time was 1135hrs...counting clean up , and putting away tools that won't be needed..Top of the bench was getting a bit "BUSY"... The only plane still on the bench..is that little Block plane...shop floor was in need of some Broom Work, too.. BEFORE I could even do the 4 Drawer Front grooves.. Each side was checked over, flattened as needed, try to find the best path for the plane..sometimes.. I didn't have much choice, so.. The #45 did not even slow down...then I labeled each drawer side as to where they will be ( #3 L = #3 drawer, left side) Only had 15 Pine ones to do... All done, and labeled..re-built the jig to hold drawer fronts,,after I swept up the floor.. To keep the front almost flat on the bench, I added that thin strip under the beveled edge..then clamped the front in place...didn't take quite as long as the Pine grooves to do.. All 8 fronts are now done..figured I was done making grooves, for now, so.. Bring the case to the plane.. Tear the plane down, and pack it up.. Close the lid, and place this back unto it's own shelf...There IS a second #45 in the background...but, it is set up for Dados..will bring it out in a few days... Have to set up to make Dovetail "Tails" to join the front corners of those 8 drawers...= 16 corners to cut and fit..then cut the drawer sides for final length.. Might take a day or 3? Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman Posted May 25, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 25, 2024 1st corner dry fit.. Seems the pencil could have bee a wee bit sharper...so..dry fit corner #2.. Have already hauled a small pencil sharpener to the shop, unable to reach the main one in the shop... checking that the grooves do line up.. So..tomorrow morning..I'll sharpen that pencil to a very needle like point, and see how many corners I can get done Stay tuned Harry Brink, Cal, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted May 25, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 25, 2024 0800 start time, this morning..first item? And it is not a power tool...needed to get those 3 pencils needle sharp.. To better lay out the Tails to be cut...started here.. 3 drawers are already done...drawer sides needed to be trimmed for length, too Mitre Box was a bit busy, this morning.. Traced around the "pins" onto the drawer sides...mark where the waste cuts will be..then a step or 2 over to the only power tool in use, today.. Hey, Gene! Gary's old bandsaw is still going strong! Removed all the waste ares.. When I NEED a mallet to drive these home...fit seems to be pretty good..even when the drawer front is wider than the drawer side..as long as both are the same at the bottom of the drawer. Took a while..but.. All drawer sides are now connected to their drawer fronts..( didn't want to push most of them all the way in..without any knobs.. Cordless drill/driver, to build a jig for making dados.. And these are the parts... About ready for a test fit? almost too tight? the backsaw? Mr Jackson has one job..kerf cuts at the entrance and exit points for the Stanley No. 45 Type 4...so there will be no blowouts..I drag the dado plane back a few times, to allow the spurs to score the grain..use that to guide the saw. Plane has a 3/4" wide cutter...the key being..that the spurs hang down farther than the blade is set for depth. Clean up is with a 3/4" wide chisel. One last chore for each dado.. I call it a "starter Bevel"...makes it easier to "start" a full drawer into the case. 2 dados done...14 to go... Then cut 8 drawer backs and 8 drawer bottom panels..might get a glue up by Tuesday? Quitting Time this morning? 1010 hrs, Zulu...counting a break... Stay tuned.. HARO50, lew, Gerald and 3 others 5 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted May 26, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 26, 2024 Ok..hauled the first batch of knobs to the shop, tonight..and one of the 1 x 4 x 6' pine planks... Can't access the Tablesaw, right now...will just have to make do.. Thought I could cut the pine plank for a drawer back..once I figured out how long..( 21-1/2") tried a dry fit..Cut was made on the No. 7c Mitre Box.. Length was fine,,it was way too tall..as a plywood bottom has to slide under it.. So...I had to remove about that much..without using the tablesaw... We have ways.. Then clean up the rough edge left by the rip saw.. That knot made things...interesting.. Knobs at the ready? May install them, as it will make opening the drawers easier..during test fits... Decided to put this back to work, for 2 more drawer sides.. That is my reflection under the handle, BTW....Nickel Plate is very shiny...plane still works like new..too.. Leaves a nice smooth dado floor, too. Top 2 drawers are ready to have their plywood bottoms done... May try to do a few more tomorrow? Stay tuned.. Harry Brink, Fred W. Hargis Jr, lew and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted May 26, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 26, 2024 What I thought was to be a quick trip to the shop this morning...was just going to sharpen the cutter in the Stanley 45, and haul a 1/4" x 2' x 4' plywood panel to the shop.... One thing led to another...sharpen cutter, gave it a test run, or 2...Drawer #3 now has both dados done... Still had a stick of Pine 1x4 to cut done...again...Drawer #3 now has a piece for it's back.. All parts except the plywood bottom are stacked in there... Dragged the tablesaw out...WAY out..and made a couple cuts in that plywood panel...wound up with 2 drawer bottom panels...and a nice, but too small piece for future Projects...Figured I could assemble a couple drawers? Drawer #2...did not even need clamps to assemble...and it even got it's knobs installed...same with Drawer #1,, except, it is still sitting on my tablesaw, with clamps, waiting on the glue to cure..It does have it's knobs installed, too.. May haul another Plywood panel and a 1x4 to the shop, later? maybe work on #4 drawer? We'll see..Stay tuned... HARO50, Gerald, lew and 5 others 5 3 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted May 26, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 26, 2024 Hauled another 1 x 4 to the shop... Clamps came off of Drawer #1.. And it is done..Started on Drawer #4.. Working on down..Handsaw? Seemed to do better than the bandsaw cutting corners... 3 drawer back have been milled up..and.. Drawer #5 is ready for assembly as well...need to cut some more plywood panels...and 6 more dados..and just 2 more drawer backs...might start work on the Top, and it's bread board edges....by Wednesday? Right now, Back is sore..and if something moves..it either hurts or cramps...I think I am done for today...maybe? Stay tuned.. Fred W. Hargis Jr, Larry Buskirk, Grandpadave52 and 3 others 6 Quote

Then loaded the Dryer..while I worked on #6 drawer...have enough parts done..I can assemble #5 and #6 in the morning.. Even have 2 plywood panels at the ready...might do a wee assembly work tomorrow? lew, HARO50, Larry Buskirk and 5 others 8 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted May 27, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 27, 2024 Drawer Building 101..starts here.. 2 sides, already predrilled...a piece for the back of the drawer, and Drawer Front, also predrilled for 2 knobs These needed a counter sink bit... Spread a lot of glue around the tails...and install both sides into the Drawer Front.. Yes, they do lean out a bit...makes it easier.. To slide the drawer bottom panel into place.. Drawer back is next..glue on the ends and along one edge... I use the screws as a clamp..next, grab a BIG square.. A little "toe-in is fine...but I do not want any "Toe-out"..then add screws to fix things in place.. All depends on the size and depth of a drawer, as to how many screws I use. Then flip the drawer over.. Knobs come with a screw...I add a bit of glue between the knob and the drawer front... Then test fit Drawer #5.. And get set up for the next drawer... Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman Posted May 27, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 27, 2024 Last of the drawer backs were cut to length, today...one still needs ripped for final width. Last of the plywood panels has been cut.. There isn't much room down here.... Drawer bottom... And "leftovers" Drawer #7 has it's dados milled, and holes predrilled...Drawer #6 is assembled and sitting in it's spot in the case.. Get these 2 done, tomorrow, I hope... Stay tuned.. This is without any edit being done, other than the name on the photo... All drawers are done, Finally.. Tasks for the shop, later? Square the ends up to the sides...and flatten to find the best "show face"..then add.. One of these to each end, as Bread Board ends.. Stay tuned.. Cal, HARO50, Gerald and 3 others 4 2 Quote
