May 29, 20242 yr Author Popular Post So..Tuesday afternoon, after a quick trip to Harbor Freight.tried to walk/work through that Groin Pull thing...ouch Clamps and cauls came off..and I needed to square both ends of the panel...drawer 2 lines...one shows where the saw will cut, the one on the left goes where a guide fence will be, to guide a circular saw Same fence I use on both the tablesaw and the router table.. Everything clamped down tight? Saw at the ready? Make the cut... Done...repeat for the other end..Saw? Vintage, of course...takes a hard to find 6" blade...more on that router bit later ( had to bandsaw it out of it's plastic box) Then set up to try and flatten the panels.. New 80 grit sanding belts (3) tried their best..then the big guy came out.. Stanley No. 8c...that Ash will not talk back to.. Meanwhile.. I used the Langdon 72c to cut 2 blanks for length..then a No. 5-1/2c to joint an edge...then that little plane in the background took over... As I needed grooves made...the plane? A Union No. 41, set up to plough a groove..careful, though, there is a spring-loaded bolt right alongside the front knob, waiting to mark and finger so un-wise as to get near it..it will bite. Ok, about the brand new router bit.. It NORMALLY gets used to cut 1/2" x 1/2" rebates...I need mine a wee bit smaller The "Problem"...it will NOT fit through the plastic base on the router....hmmm, plastic base? We have ways... Set the router up with the bit as low as it can go and touching the base, just like this, into the bench vise's wooden jaws. Turn the router "ON".. use the provided Allen wrench to slowly raise the base up into the spinning bit...throws plastic "sawdust" everywhere...until the bit is all the way through the base. Will set up the guide fence in the morning (maybe) and make 4 passes..one for each side of the tongues-to-be.. Because the Union #41 does a very bad job on end grain...especially on a panel of this size.. Stay tuned..
May 29, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Scheduled Completion Date: 31 MAY 2024.... Actual? might need about one more week, until it is upstairs and in the Bedroom, waiting to be loaded up. Bread Board ends have been fitted to the Top...all three are now sitting in clamps, awaiting glue to cure... Slotted holes to attach the top to the case, have been drilled into the corner braces. Might spend all of the next 2 days...sanding, filling and sanding some more....sides were done long ago...it is the front of the case, and all them drawer fronts....and the top....goal is to get down to 220 grit and then get out the Witch's Brew Stain After that? Stay tuned..film in a little bit...you want the edit version, or without?

Whichever you've got the time and patience for. I'm still trying to get caught up here from the last couple weeks, but I'll get it read. Living my woodworking dreams through you.
May 29, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Be careful want one asks for... 2 tasks were done, this morning...for some reason..photos were being rotated at that larger size...so.. went from 4160 pixels "down" to 640 pixels on the larger side..no rotation? Hmmm.. All clamped down, and set up..do a pass on each face at this end.. Test the fit.. Just a tad too tight..get out the depth adjust for the router..again.. Loosen the collar, this goes into the base and turns a bolt to raise or lower a bit..try again.. Tongue is a bit too long...fixed that....rotate and flip..and do the other end..then the glue and clamps showed up... Let this sit a day or 2... Task #2...was about "Playing the Slots" By using the cordless drill, to drill a hole , then rock the drill fore and aft... Until a slot is form....allows for wood movement in the Top. 2" screw with a washer.. All that was left this morning? Is to sweep up the mess that router made... Stay tuned (photos look ok?)
May 30, 20242 yr Author Popular Post There are some days, even for me..that just need a day off from the shop..so..I am staying away from the shop, today..and trying to get the legs to heal up..Might try again tomorrow, eh? Not sure if it the Weather vs Uncle Arthur (itis) or , maybe I pulled something I shouldn't have...right now, I am just sitting and taking things a bit easy... Even the EverReady Bunny runs out of energy, now and then..
May 31, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Was working way to hard, for a Friday, but... A repair was made.. To close up a gap between the divider and the drawer..then sand all the drawer fronts. to remove the saw marks and burn marks sanded to 180 grit..Finally.. All cleaned up and smoothed out..they can sit here, for now.. NEXT! Flatten both faces..beltsander with 80 grit..needed clamp to keep the Top from flying off the table..saw.. PSA: Them clamps WILL bite..Fresh DNA!..then a ROS to 220 grit, then.. Scraped down..had a small paint can handy, drew an arc on each corner, beltsander to remove the waste.. Clear a spot off on my bench.. plop this good face down, with the "back edge" towards the bandsaw.. Stack all the drawers up on top of the tablesaw.. Which means this.. (going to feel this later..)is ready to lift up onto the Top..Did a few stretches, took a deep breath.. Note I also had to "flip" it over..then center the dang thing on the Top.. Combo Square to check to see IF both ends stick out the same...mallet assist as needed..case is flush with the back edge of the Top...yep..Plenty of room.. Then the real fun can begin.. Getting those screws installed..arms had to squeeze through the Dividers, set a 2" screw and a 1/4" washer into each hole..the other arm AND the cordless drill had to come in through the next higher opening ( fat forearms and all) keeping the screw vertical AND the drill, and drive until the clutch says 'STOP".. Then, I sweep up the shop, and head upstairs..where I got cleaned up, and a Cold Guinness in a TALL glass awaited.. I think that will do, for a Friday? Stay tuned..
May 31, 20242 yr Popular Post Great progress and yep squeezing in between those spacer is trying to arms and neck , trying to see what you are doing. Oh how sweet when done.
June 1, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Well, ok..this morning, I opened up 2 cans...a Dark Walnut stain for the knobs, and.. Added a little "Gunstock" stain to the "mix". I needed that step ladder wannabee..to see what I was doing at the top(Bottom) of the case..this is side #2..had already done Side #1 and the Front...spun the case around, and finished things up... Fun part, rag in each hand..rotate this Thing over, and onto it's own 4 feet.. Had one more power tool job to do.. Need to use just the cove part of this router bit.. Run a Cove all the way around the edges of the Top..THEN I could stain it,,and any other spots I missed.. Knobs were first stained with the Dark Walnut..wiped down a bit, then the entire drawer front was stained with the Witch's Brew...intent was to give the knobs an "Old & Well Worn" look.. As each drawer was stained and blended, they were slid into their new homes When I was finally done wiping things down.. rag was then stretched out and allowed to dry...and I called it a day.. So...does this count as a PIP? Letting this dry a day, or 2...then start the poly gloss... Stay tuned
June 2, 20242 yr Popular Post I've said it before Steven, but it bears repeating... one of your bestest!
June 4, 20242 yr Author Popular Post A "Finale" if you will...waiting on a second coat for the Top to dry...(seen as I went upstairs..) Kind of a Dark corner.. Lighten things up a bit... other corner? And a full frontal look.. Pulled a drawer out a bit, to show off.. waiting on the Top's second coat to dry, before I haul this upstairs...and find a spot for it..
