November 19, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Dado 101... Needs a better jig.. Much easier when a part isn't hoping around on the bench...now it will stay put. Cutter in the Stanley #45, Type 4...was set below the nickes/spurs...and not letting them work...cutter is now just a blond hair higher than the spurs... Drag the plane backwards a few (3-4) times, without trying to actually plane the dado...stop there...That Jackson Backsaw is then used where the spurs exit on the far side..to prevent any BAD blowouts..saw down level with the bottom of the groove...Then just run the plane until it stops cutting... Not really worried about that little square getting knocked off...IF the floor of the dado is a bit rough..we have ways.. Then test the fit.. Now, about that little square that got bumped off? Whenever I build these kind of drawers...I cut a "Starter Bevel' to help when sliding a full drawer into the case..so A line to be bandsawn...goes from the top of the groove, to the front of the dado... Drawer back stops at the top of the drawer bottom....drawer bottom panel is usually a hair past the dado. Dado will get 3 counter sunk screws from the outside , and into the drawer's back...I do not rely on just glue alone. Drawer bottom is also glued and screwed to the bottom of the drawer's back..Dovetails up in front are just glued in place, with a few clamps....May need to go to Harbor Freight, and buy a few 36" clamps....as my 24" ones will not reach ....drat.. 2 drawers have their dados done...only 3 more drawers to do ( 6 dados) Road trip today...may not see the shop until....Monday Stay tuned...
November 21, 20232 yr Author Popular Post 2 drawers have been built, and are completed except for their knobs...there were "Issues" though.. Backs were cut according to "Plan" with a 1/4" deep dado in mind....actual dados were 3/8" deep..oops..wound up with a toe-in at the back.. Leaves about an 1/8" to make sure they are even.. Screws along the back, where the bottom goes across.. And glue & screws where the back sits in the dados.. Big clamp to pull the diagonals.. Until the 2 squares showed the same gap...then a couple nails through the front groove and the front edge of the panel, to keep things still.. As for cutting that panel? Tain't a whole lot of room in the shop.. Had to unplug the saw, flip the switch to "ON", get the panel up onto the saw, and ready to cut..THEN plug the saw in..repeat until all these are ripped to width.. Will need to cross cut for length... Stashed the completed 2 drawers.. No. 4 drawer just needs glue, screws and nails...then do the #3 and #5 drawers tomorrow? Stay tuned..
November 21, 20232 yr Popular Post You've had a good run on this one Only one day 'til Thanksgiving but no need to rush. Take the day off. "We" need it. I plan to be here until the project is done; hopefully far longer than that. Will be a nice one when done. Gonna' need plenty of help to tote this one into place.
November 22, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Tasks for today? Get the 5 drawers done.. Drill is sitting inside the top drawer for a reason..Task #2 Slots needed milled to attach the top to the case..slots allow the top to expand and contract as the seasons change.. I drill straight down through the braces.. Rock the drill front to back a few times..until the slot appears.. Task #3? Clean off the tablesaw, and set this mess on it...need to flatten the surface, choose which face looks the best...square up both ends..and route a tongue on each end...to fit into a groove in the Bread Board ends...and install them onto the top... I think I'll leave those tasks for another day..had enough fun for today.. Stay tuned...
November 22, 20232 yr Guess I missed them too. Ya' got some sweet looking grain patterns going there.
November 24, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Wasn't much else going on today...so... Removed the cauls, and leveled the show face of the top....with some help from a new belt on the beltsander... Non-show face was merely sanded flat as needed...because nobody will ever see it once it is on the case. Ends needed trimmed a bit.. Rip fence to guide the circular saw....kind of a "Vintage" saw.. not sure about how old this is...it came with a metal case.. In order to mill tongues on the ends...needed change out the collet on my router.. Because the widest bit was 1/2" shanked...had none in 1/4" shank.. Set up the rip fence again.. This took 2 settings of the fence..then flip over and around until both tongues are done... I used both of these to clean up after the router..4 times 2 one this end, and.. 2 on the other end...the top is sitting back on the case...needed the tablesaw for a bit.. Needed to mill a groove in the ends pieces...After I had cut them for length, and...ripped for width..Reset the fence a bit, and buzz out that center section....then a dry fit... Hmmm, we have work to do.....other end's tongues was out of square to the sides,,,and a hair too long...back to the tablesaw to re-square the top...Grooves were hand planed down to match...and get rid of that gap...until... The Bread Board ends could be glued and clamped into place...will let this sit a day..details? C clamps to make things closer to flush... There will be something "Special" added to the front... Look at them skinny feet...thinking about adding a bit extra down there...with glue and screws...to reinforce those skinny "legs"...will need the bandsaw cleaned off...tomorrow? Stay tuned..

November 26, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Bracket Friday, instead of Black Friday? Front and back brackets...test the fit.. and back brackets Each needed a pair of counter bored pilot holes..each at a certain angle.. Note the lay out line. Front brackets were just screws and glue... However, since I had already run a cove bit in this area...I had to offset the front brackets in a bit....and shave a bit off, so that it won't show up from the side of the case....they also got shaved a different way... Seymour Smith & Son....to round over the square edges Back brackets were a bit simpler...as long as I missed the "Kickers" But, at least I could also glue the bracket to the plywood back hanging down...had to watch how deep the counter bores were...ONE hole, needed a washer on the screw.. Otherwise the screw would have gone on through. All clamps came back off, today....more on that in a moment.. Stay tuned
November 26, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Ok...kind of sore, today...and it took 2 people to move things around a bit. First off, Drawers need a final fine tune for fit...No. 78 and a #4 took care of that...then each, after the fitting out, were given a coat of Witch'Brew..brushed on, wiped down..on just the drawer fronts. As I tend NOT to apply any finish to the insides of a Project...takes FOREVER to get that smell out. Let the 5 drawers sit out of the way, for now...next? Craig and I had to lift the case up onto the tablesaw, and onto the Top panel...and NOT hit anything overhead..like Lights, or heating ducts. Then I could center up the case on the back, side to side...I wanted the Back flush...left a nice overhang out front...4 screws, each with 4 washers ( screws were too long, by the thickness of all them washers..) to attach the Case to the Top....whew. Next, a coat of Witch's Brew was brushed on and wiped down on the case, and the underside of the bread board ends.. Next, I lifted the case off the Tablesaw, while Craig pushed the saw back out of the way...then we moved the case over in front of the tablesaw...slid all the drawers into place. Then a belt sander to sand a radius on the front 2 corners... Changed out the router to a 1/4" shanked Cove bit...ran that all the way around the top of the Top.....twice? Burnt a couple places going around the back corners...then a ROS with 220 grit paper was run all over the Top..and wiped down. Finally, a coat of Witch's Brew Stain for the Top..and any other places I missed.. Then......hang up the shop apron.. As I think I was done wood working for the day....PIP, anyone? rest of this corner..and... The other corner. Like the Brackets? Top Details? This camera has a bad habit dealing with any straight line...turns them wavy...working on that.. Finally, a full frontal? Thinking maybe 2 coats of Amber Shellac for a top coat? Stay tuned...
