November 11, 20232 yr Popular Post Looking pretty good from here. Don't you just hate it when the end is in sight and you work that much harder to get there?

November 14, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Hauled 2 bundles to a friend's barn, today.. This one ( to be the glued up top of the chest of drawers) and.. and these 5 blanks for drawer fronts...all are almost 4/4 thick....and I would prefer them to be 3/4" thick. Barn has my old Delta 12" lunch box planer..so.. the longest 2 of this stash went along, too...they will take out the snipe, and save the Good Wood from the dreaded sniper...in theory. Took along the Lufkin No. 456 caliper, so I can check how thick the boards actually are.. Somewhere along the way...the planer must have gotten hungry..and chewed off about 3" of one of the Blanks for the top...turns out there WAS a knot in that location....Barn's owner decided to replace that chewed up board.. 1 x 6 x 6'5" Ash plank...which we also sent through to get it to match the other boards...It did have a knot, though.. Which will soon be heading out to the Fire Pit...Got back home with all the wood stuff,,hauled the 2 bundles to the shop.. Bundle of blanks for the top of this chest of drawers...chewed up one will become one of the bread board ends... Behind this pile.. Are the 5 blanks for the drawer fronts...one is a bit too "plain Jane" Kind of bland....most of the rest look a bit better.. may use a bit of the Replacement plank to replace the bland blank? Case was sitting on top of the tablesaw, as crack filling, leveling face frame rails, and a repair were being done... Had a split end going on.. need to clear another mess.. As I need my bench back...have a bunch of Jointing to do...and the "Jointer" is sitting down below on the shelf... Looking like a "FUN" week coming up... Stay tuned...

If so, I "think" I have a set of new knives in the shop for it. Let me know and I will get them out to you. Best to send a message, I may not get back on before we leave for a couple weeks.
November 14, 20232 yr Author Can't remember the model number..it takes rather thin, double edged blades...
November 14, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Busy morning... BTW...what happens when a Planer finds a knot.. Also makes a loud noise... One of the drawer fronts was a bit too squirrelly ..rejected one end... Saved the rest for a December Project... First layout of the top.. Not the prettiest gal at the dance? Might be able to work around those knots. Router made a detail.. A small cove detail around the front, and at the bottom of the sides... Cordless Jointer and a steel straightedge..then check as I went.. Looking for any large gaps the clamps can't pull tight.. Glue and clamps..and... Cauls will become the bread board ends later...letting this sit a spell, along with me...when I can get me tablesaw back, I'll start on the drawer fronts.. I am plumb tuckered out, at the moment... Stay tuned
November 15, 20232 yr Author Popular Post They call Wednesday "Hump Day" for a reason....dug through the rack of 1 x 6 x 6' White Wood "boards" at Lowes, this morning...Paid more for them than I did for the Ash Lumber supply! Sorted through 20+ boards, to find the "best" 5 in there.. No, they do NOT improve with "Focus" either....trust me...but, for the sides and backs of a few drawers, I can work around the bad spots... Clamps came off of the glued up panel, so I could set it aside.. But leave the cauls & clamps in place. Need to size the drawer fronts, today.. And sort which one goes where..a few were too long, couple were to wide...needed to allow for the rebates on the ends and along the "top"edge... This scrap? Tilt the saw blade to 15 degrees...and use this the set where the rip fence should go..Warning, once you start a cut.. Do NOT slow down or pause,,,unless you like removing burn marks..once things were set..ran the 5 blanks through all 4 edges... These rebates were done.. Also on the tablesaw...and fitted to their openings as I went along.. This is what they are supposed to look like...Drawer #4 wanted to be a PITA about it....A little work with the Stanley No.8c cured that...was higher on the ends, than in the middle..then re-cut the rebates.. Still a bit too tight...plane will cure that, too.. Rebates were a bit uneven from the tablesaw...we have ways.. As for that plane behind the Ward's No.78? Stanley #45...I need a 1/4" x 1/4" groove, to house the bottom of the drawers.. Helps to clear things out, now and then...and a rub with an old candle helps too. Got 3 out of 5 drawer fronts milled and ready for Dovetails...then the toes and back said it was time to clean the place up..and stop for the day Sweep up the Krunchies, and Move the saw and sweep up this pile, too... But...the trash can is too full... The Lunch box planer leaves a lot of little ridges behind...Scallops? We have ways... Busy 2 hours? Stay tuned..
November 16, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Last night..snuck back to the shop, and finish the last 2 drawer fronts,, And left a mess...this morning, I had to move the tablesaw out of the way..and drag this thing out to where I can use it Installed a 1/2" dovetail bit, and grabbed the fence off of the tablesaw As it is also set up for use on the router table.. Has a space to bury a few bits, bearings and all..also has "Start & Stop" lines.. Each socket needed the fence to be moved...4 fronts had one setting per socket.. Drawer #4 wanted to be "Special" took a separate setting for each on this end. Having the rebate along the top edge made things a bit trickier than just running the grooved edge along the fence. Rebate had to run along the fence. Long ago, I learned to feed the router table in just on direction with a fence...Right to Left....otherwise, the bit will toss the part out to the side..away from the fence.. Lined things up..do the other ends.. Got these done...then the Boss wanted to go to Wall E World....while there..bought a package of 10 knobs for the drawers. Might later haul those planks from Lowes to the shop...and see what I can get out of them.. Need 10 drawers sides, and 5 drawer backs..and NO KNOTS where I need to be cutting things.. Stay tuned Edited November 16, 20232 yr by steven newman
November 16, 20232 yr Popular Post I'm just amazed you used the router table to cut dovetails. Someplace must have frozen over
November 17, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Time to cut up them Lowes Whitewood planks...needed 5 pairs for drawer sides..about a 1/16" short of full depth... Handsome, ain't they? Next, rip these down for a slip fit in the drawer openings, fitted to each drawer, BTW How bad were these planks...well, this section wasn't even usable as a shelf.. Just a "bad edge", right? flip it over.. Same board, just the other edge...tossed this one...was the reason I bought an extra plank... Needed 5 drawer backs cut to length.. Once I find out how tall to make these, for each drawer back...I can rip them to final size.. As for those curvy parts? We have ways.. If'n this takes too long....there is always the belt sander... Because IF I clamp this thing flat, it will just crack... And to think...I paid MORE for these 5 cheap planks, than I did for 22 planks of Ash? Hmmm. Might try to cut a few tails tomorrow, and see about getting a drawer assembled? Sides need the tails cut and fitted, and agroove ploughed for the drawer's bottom panel...and a dado to house the back... Stay tuned..there will be cussing involved...

November 18, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Drawer #1...getting the 2 sides installed..1st dry fit? Second dry fit... Getting better each time... Have to mark up the insides as to which goes where...Place drawer #1 aside.. Work on Drawer #2 Set it aside and start on #3.. Layout the "Tails" and then to the bandsaw.. Why the bandsaw? Because I can SEE where the cuts are going, trying to stay on the WASTE sides of the lines..more line I leave, the tighter the joint..then onto the chopping block.. A plywood square, set up to protect the top of my bench from wayward chisel strikes..Extra bandsaw cuts help out with waste removal, too. #3 Drawer.. Got one end done....looked at the other side piece.. Back and camera both said it was time to quit for a while...would need to plane that board flat, and then cut the tails... later, had a plane to haul to the shop.. Craftsman No. 3709 stamped into the left side of the plane...made by Milers Falls ( No. 9 size) and sold at Sears.. Of course, I needed to test drive this #4 sized plane a bit.. Wound up flattening that side for drawer #3 after all...15 minutes later... Now have 3 out of 5 done....will try to get the last 2 Saturday.....then it will be these two's turn.. One set up to plough grooves, the one in front for dados to house the drawer backs..nickers are a bit dull, will use a saw to help out... Stay tuned...
November 18, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Ok..last of these things are now DONE! Still using this plane.. while checking for either high or low spots.. Looking for any gaps under the speed square...or if it rocks side to side.. Was a lot of shavings being made, today.. With a LOT more on the way... Since I ended with Drawer #5, decided to start on grooves for it..since it was still out and about..needed a jig.. To hold each drawer side still, long enough to plough a groove.. One has to stop every now and then.. And clear out the "noodles" before they clog up the works...and hope the grooves line up.. Might have been a very busy day, today...when I don't even feel these going on...( until NOW! Ouch!) Only way I knew, was when one was starting to leak all over the place... Back right between the shoulder blades said I was done, for now....have both Drawer #5 and Drawer #1 grooved up...Taking a break..will see how the back is doing this evening, AFTER Football... Stay tuned

November 18, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Hauled all the shavings out to the Fire Pit, tonight....only to have the Lighter stop working...went to Wall E World. PAID for a lighter..got back home..could NOT find it in any of the sacks...??????? Had to use their electric go-cart to get around IN the store....legs were not working all that great...might just take the rest of the night off...but...the floor in the shop is now shavings free...for a day...
November 19, 20232 yr Author Popular Post Got very bored last night...so..went back to the shop and complete all the rest of the grooves....with the idea of setting up the Type 4 Stanley No. 45 to plough dados for the drawer's back....worked out about as well as buying a lighter did... Will look at why later today..but.. Drawer #4 does have it's 2 dados done.... Involved: Mortise gauge to deepen the spur lines enough.. Backsaw could then saw to the depth needed for the walls of the dado... 3/4" wide chisel..to remove most of the waste... Stanley No. 71-1/2 to plane the floor of the dado flat and smooth... Bandsaw to clip the corner ... Reset the jig for the next board... Dado only needs to be as deep as the groove for the drawer's bottom panel. Clipping the back corner of the drawer side? Makes sliding a full drawer into the case a lot easier.. Film this afternoon, maybe? Ser Uncle Charles decided the calf on me left leg should be used to wake me up, this morning...forgot the Tonic & Gin, last night. Stay tuned...
