Popular Post steven newman Posted November 1, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 1, 2023 Will give me a chance to charge up the Camera battery.....with any sort of luck...I might have one case side glued up...and in the clamps.. As for that white crap.. Dogs liked it...I don't....almost like someone had dumped a load of fat, fluffy Snowballs in my backyard ( that USED to be a Tomato plant, BTW) Grandpadave52, Cal, Larry Buskirk and 2 others 5 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted November 1, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 1, 2023 Ok...might be a bit boring to some..but here is the steps I take when doing these mortises..as I had 2 to do, today...start here.. Have a mortise to do on either side of that panel...clear away all the parts, so I can work.. first.. Mark 2 miter cut lines..then. Mark how far down to cut...saw should just nick the bottom of the groove..saw? One of these things. How to remove the waste? A wide chisel usually works..then double check where the mortise is SUPPOSED to go.. Should be right where the 2 saw cuts grazed the groove's bottom...time for a chisel.. Since it has been getting quite a work out lately..decided to resharpen it ...then pound away, until the mortise shows up.. Dry fit...both to check the depth, and how well the miters meet up...I also checked it against the last rail, with a panel in-between.. Should do the job...do basically the same for the bottom rail's mortise....after which.. We have bandsaw work to do..pattern is the waste I cut from the other stile..and will use it on the last 2 stiles.. Next? the panels were looking a bit too rough.. 80 grit belt sander to get it close to smooth and flat (cupping?) then.. 2 planes took over...this is a #4-1/2c..the other one was a #60-1/2 Block plane that was used on the bevels Flip the panels over.. Just the belt sander here...seems the edges were higher than the middle of the panel? Had to get out the StanleyNo. 71-1/2....there was a ridge running right down the middle of one of the rebates..so it was set to peel it right off. Rails were planed flat and smooth on the outside face only. Stiles needed to be planed flat and smooth also.. Then the cussing could begin! Grabbed the glue bottle, and of course had to clean out the nozzle..then grabbed an acid brush to spread said glue around on all the tenons...started at the bottom rail, then add a panel, then another rail, the another panel..paying attention to the direction of the grain in the panels as I went up the side...something about the number 13? as in 13 parts that all needed to go together, at the same moment in time? 5 clamps...with 2 being pipe clamps...for that extra "UMPH" to close a gap or 3..decided to check for square..not quite there? We have ways.. Just a wee clamp..pulling until.. This says it is square... Will let this mess sit here.. Until tomorrow...in the meantime... Have to get started on Side #2..... Stay tuned..I'm plumb tuckered up DuckSoup, Grandpadave52, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 3 others 5 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 5, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 5, 2023 Well, side #1 is out of the clamps... And Side #2 USED to be here.... Which means it just might have moved to... Top of my tablesaw? Need to remove them clamps today...as I need the Tablesaw back in use....webframes need their parts milled down, today.. Diagonals were 3/8" out of square...BIG clamp took care of that problem....will clamp the 2 sides together after a while...and match them up... Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman Posted November 5, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 5, 2023 I don't know HOW to use a Phone for taking photos to post to the computer.... Have lost one of the "apps" I WAS using for editing photos on the computer.... So.. Was a busy morning, today...as I got my tablesaw back....from being an assembly table... Starting to get filled up...almost time for the Fire Pit, again? Crosscutting a few planks... The part of a webframe called the Divider...need 12 of these... Hmm...handsome, ain't they? Went through 3 planks.. To get these 24 parts...short stick are what the drawer rides on..and connects the 2 sides together Managed to get the Runners milled down to 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 11-3/4" long even resawed them down from over 7/8" thick...a few were 4/4"..Now? Still need a tenon on each end...Dividers will get a groove to match. Once they get resawn to 3/4" thick... Sides? Meh, they be just chilling out... Waiting their turn.. Popular Post Grandpadave52 Posted November 6, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted November 6, 2023 Lots of pieces parts. Coming along very nice. Grain matching on the end panels looks great. lew, Cal, Larry Buskirk and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 7, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 7, 2023 Working way too hard...for a MONDAY? 2 hours worth...On a MONDAY? These needed resawn to 3/4" thickness... Trimmed to the same length.. One edge needed dressed a bit...straightened, leveled out... Trimmers? Grab 6 parts, make one end flush, then cut the other end...runners and stiles bot...runners .. and stiles... Runners needed tenons on each end... Then the stiles needed a groove to match.. Making sure the tenons will fit.. Have one tenon that's too thin....have a groove a bit too wide... Need to mill a few Kickers, tomorrow...and then see about a bit of assembly work? Stay tuned... Popular Post steven newman Posted November 7, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 7, 2023 Ok, took 2 planks to the shop this morning...one was a bit short....the other? was a bit on the "Barky" side...ripped to 1-1/2" width...and see what I can make use of.. Going to need a lot more than this...wound up make 15 pieces, which also had to be resawn to 3/4" thick... Choose the 7 best of the bunch...for Kickers...the runners needed pilot holes drill.. With counter bores, too.. Will use an 1-5/8" screw to attach the webframes to the sides of the case.. with the screw going into each rail in the side. Next..hardware? Nails and screws...those are 1-1/4" long...nails? Glue and 2 nails per corner.. Checked for square, clamped up tight, and then the hammer Next, the Kicker.. Centered in the frame's length pilot hole is countersunk. blob of glue under it. Since this is what the back of the drawer will rub against...don't want it to catch on the head of a screw. One frame done..this is actually the underside of the frame..drawer sides ride on the other face of the frame.. These 5 are the main frames...#5 has the kicker for the Top Drawer..while the bottom drawer rides on a different frame.. 2 kickers? they are there to help strengthen the bottom corner of the case...and provide a place to support the face frame... Spaced out to allow this tool some room... So that the drill's chuck is NOT rubbing on the Kickers Made a bit of a mess, today.. Right now, I am on Laundry Detail.. And while the dryer is running, it is a bit too warm to work...always tomorrow, eh? Need to match the 2 sides of the case together...and then run a rebate along the back of the back stile...to house a plywood back...Have to go and BUY the plywood, too...THEN, MAYBE some assembly work to get a case sitting on the floor? Stay tuned... DuckSoup, aaronc, Artie and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 7, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 7, 2023 Since I had to return and put the Laundry Load from the washer over to the dryer...case sides are now clamped up together...one end is in the leg vise..and a c clamp holds the other end to the bench's apron...will let them sit like that over night....I did get the Stanley No. 8c out from under the bench...first.. May need a template router bit...as the bottom edges are a bit off....just enough to tick one off... May use a special plane for the rebates...depends on how the arms are feeling... Popular Post steven newman Posted November 8, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 8, 2023 Ok..This might be a LONG one, hope nobody minds This counter bore bit.. Did NOT go deep enough...barely two threads came out the other end..WE have ways.. Go about that deep... Go back and re-do all the webframes this way. Screw is 1-5/8" long. Had both sides clamped up in the bench, Run one edge through with the No.8c...rotate and plane/joint the other edges... Helps when you go the correct way...WITH the grain... Evened up all the feet, so that they are all the same... Used a framing square to check them...sanded down the high spots..then the bottom edge of both sides,,, Needed evened up...No. 80 did a decent job...next,set one side aside.. And get this fancy plane set up...(Made by Sargent sold by sears) And mill one rebate...made a LOT of "Krunchies", too Did a dry fit..of both the webframe, a piece of 1/4" plywood, and a stand-in for the face frame.. . And.. I WAS going to mill the other rebate.. Decided it was quitting time...busy day...? Eye doctor app this morning, then take the Boss along to the stores..Lowes for a sheet of 1/4" plywood ( they do NOT sell in 4'x4' handy panels, had to buy a full sheet and cut it down)...Wall E World...for food stuff, and a couple bags of screws...Then back home.... That will be enough "fun" for one day Stay tuned.. aaronc, DuckSoup, Larry Buskirk and 5 others 6 2 Quote
Popular Post Gerald Posted November 9, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted November 9, 2023 (edited) Progress looks good and that #8C will give you a workout just lifting it. Rarely get mine out now. Might try after Lunch, today...have the other rebate to get done...then a lot of lay out work...before I can start installing the web frames to a side...then lay out and install to the second side....just MIGHT involve cussing? Popular Post steven newman Posted November 9, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 9, 2023 More shavings? Second rebate is done..about time to put the plane back into it's fancy case? Doubt IF that is the box Sears used. Screws will get used to install the back panel.. Web frames started .. There is 5" between the kicker and the top of the next frame...framer's square to keep things square to the sides.. Once side #1 is done..clamp side #2 to it...transfer a few lines across... Again, using the BIG square...frames are installed with glue and two 1-5/8" screws...time to rotate? NOW would be a good time to add glue to each frame?.... (almost forgot..) Clamp here and there to help things along...and a hammer to "adjust" things into line...finally stand this mess up on the floor.. Hmmm, no screws poking out? Alrighty.."Faces,FRONT!" Needs a back and the face frame parts...and I need to measure for length of those parts,,,and the plywood panel for the back.. Pull the edges in tight, as they were splayed out a bit.... Stay tuned...have to haul a plywood panel to the shop... Larry Buskirk, DuckSoup, Cal and 5 others 4 4 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted November 10, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 10, 2023 Got bored last night...so.. A 4' x4' plywood panel is a PITA to haul TO the shop, AND cut on the tablesaw...and, being just a 1/4" thick, didn't help matters, either.. But... The case NOW has a back..and I used that back to square up the case....attach it along one side..then pull until the case is square.. Then cross cut and rip for parts...to make the Dividers...that strip of wood between each drawer front....I WAS going to dovetail them in place, but... This seemed to work just fine...3 out of 6 are now glued in place...even cut one corner brace.. Which is also where the top of the case will get attached to...waiting on the clamps to go elsewhere, so I can add in the other 3 braces. Need to sort through the remains of the Ash Stash..and see IF I'll need another board or two...have 5 drawer fronts to make, and glue up a panel for the top of the case. Stay tuned BTW: Right leg is a bit crampy, this morning...might have done a weeeee bit too much, yesterday? I did find the stash of BRAND NEW PENCILS in my computer desk drawer....guess I could haul those to the shop, later? Larry Buskirk, lew, Cal and 5 others 7 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 10, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 10, 2023 Working way too hard, for a Friday... Rest of the Dividers are cut and glued in place..bottom one is a little fancier...and there is a glue block behind the center of it...with a screw to help out.. Rear brace has been reinforced..while the other 3 await the glue to dry a day.. Before they also get a couple screws.. Out of this stash.. I NEED to get blanks for 5 Drawer Fronts... Seems Drawer #4 is a bit shallower than the rest...I also need enough to glue up a top, with Bread Board ends... Have both sets of parts clamped together, and let them sit a few days,,,just to get used to their new sizes... And...this is what is left over.. Out of 52Bft... Drawer sides and backs will be Pine...will pick those up at LOwes this coming Wednesday ( PayDay!) I think I am done for today..... lew, Gerald, Artie and 4 others 7 Quote
