A November Project

Ok..first two planks have arrived in the shop...

Need to be cut down a bit...to 41" strong...

As they are both too long...will be a rough sort of cut, for now..

Speed square to mark out @ 41"...the cut-off?

Kind of "Fugly"?   other board was only 8" too long..but the board was tapered...so, I cut the wider end...Next

 

Finished length will be around 40" or so...this allows me to trim the ends square.   These were run through as a rip cut..rip one edge, with the "better (Straighter) edge" against the fence...then flip the boards over, move the fence a blade's width closer to the blade..run run the freshly sawn edge against the fence...result is what you see here.

 

Next, find the center point..5-1/2" divide by 2..=  2.75"..set this from the fence to the center of the saw blade..

These will be the 4 corner posts of the case.  a 32nd shy of the 2.75..but they all are the same..

Letting them get used to the shop...as I need to figure out the sizes of 6 pairs of rails...and 10 raised panels...

This is from another SMALLER chest of drawers, also built for the Bedroom..I have to mill the rails, and the raised panels, yet....more planks to the shop

Right now, the Dryer is making the shop a bit too warm to work in.

BYOB...or, should I say..BYOD, as in bring your own Donuts ( we do have a Dunkin Donut in town, BTW)

2nd hour of Shoptime, today...AFTER the shop had cooled down from the Dryer...

Rails have been figured out, and milled for length and width and even thickness....7/8" was just a hair too thick..Processing photos now...

Needed to mill the rails @ 11-1/2"  to start..will trim the final length later...

Cut planks down to rough length..blanks were then edge so all the edges were parallel....then set the fence to 2" width..milled 4 rails...reset to 1-1/2" and ran the other 8...then set up a resaw fence..

WithOUT the mitre gauge....set to skim off one rough face (barely) then reset to 3/4" thickness..

Two of the 2" wide rails are for the bottom..

2 sides, remember...then two more for the top rails..

Had enough left over for 2 raised panel blanks...

These are the 8 middle rails, @ 1-1/2" wide...

 

Debate as to whether to run the 4 stiles through...or leave them thick along with the Raised panels...

Might just set the rails flush to the INSIDE of the stiles..and also have the raise panel flush with the inside.....and both act as drawer guides?

 

 

Tomorrow?   Mill the rest of the raised panel blanks (8)  for a total of 10 panels....THEN I can start on some joinery stuff? 

 

Will try to have the done BY Thanksgiving?

Was working way too hard, for a Friday...

Had to move the tablesaw back, in order to sweep this up....one hour's worth..

2 of these were already done..used them to rough cut the other 8 for length, then..

rip fence set to skim one edge smooth, flip over, and move the fence half a blade width closer to the blade..and run all 10 blanks through..

Edges are now parallel...needs the ends squared up..

Let these sit a day, or two..need to get the final sizes...

Rails...were squared up on one end, the cut to final length at the other end...setting them out for spacing with a panel blank to help out...stiles were a tad too long..

need to cut about that much off of the bottom...

And about this much off of the tops.  Decided to...after trimming for length..

That I should thin the stiles down a bit....skimmed a blade width from each face..stiles are now 3/4" thick..and..

NOW match the rails...makes it a bit easier for the M&T joinery coming up...

 

I can use the Stanley No. 45 to mill grooves in the rails...and might use the same setups to run matching grooves in the Stiles..

 

Letting the Infamous Single Brain Cell Sketch Up get caught up with this....Might go ahead and mill a few grooves?

Got bored, this evening...so..after Supper....headed to the shop with a 1 hour time limit...

And that pile is ankle deep...was a BUSY 1 hour?

 

Set up to mill a few grooves..takes 4 passes per edge...

Takes 2 settings of the fence

Middle rails get a groove on both edges, top and bottom rails only need one...as does the Stiles...reset the fence a hair..

A little wide? Not really, as a Raised Panel is to fit in there..

 

Once all the grooves were done...then do a few tenons..

Results?

Was trying for a slip fit..

Just remember..do both ends...

The top and bottom rail uses a special cut..

All the red area will be gone, there will be a miter joint involved..

As the rails fit in a bit deep..

Like at the bottom of the groove...and still have a 1/2" long tenon to chop a mortise for...middle rails get all 4 corners mitered..

 

 

Toes were cramping, time for an ICE COLD Tonic & Gin...and cool down for the night..

 

Tomorrow just might be a day of chopping mortises?

Router table just MIGHT get used, today

Choice for the edge of the grooves...round-over, or...cove?  Will be a very small detail, shows up only on the outside of the case...picture frames the Raised Panels. 

 

Pretty sure that some cussing MIGHT get involved?

This will be a 2 parter...Part 1:

This contraption is a Router table..the router?

Is from Black & Decker, a clone of the DeWalt No. 610..wrenches?

You need 2 to change a bit with..the Bit?

Don't want to trust it this way...buried the bearing into the fence..

Gives a bit of support..results?

This is the outside face of the rail...all the rails get such a molding done..

Stiles as well..IF an edge has a groove, the outside face gets a molded profile..had watch watch which side of the stiles was to be the "outside" face..

 

BTW: I also cut the blanks for the raised Panels  to final length of 11"..

And set them aside...

Part #2..miter work..

 

Rails fit down into the grooves..using a miter joint, and a mortise & Tenon joint..molded edges meet up in a "picture  frame" corner..so..

Lean the blade over to 45 degrees..there is a mark on the wood part of the mitre gauge..

So that each cut will be the same...saw set as to NOT cut into the tenon..

I'll need to hand saw the 45s on the stiles   as for the top and the bottom rails..

There is only one miter joint..(Dry fit..)  as the top edge will be under the top of the case...bottom one has a different thing going on..

 

Parts are sitting in a mortise jig..

Sits right on top of the bench's leg..no bouncing around allowed...clamp a part into the jig..

Lay out for the mortise..

And have a few tools on hand...

Fancy handled chisel is curved tip, to extract chips from the bottom of Mortises..Dovetail saw to saw the miter cut on the stile. Small combo square to mark that miter cut...

Zig-Zag ruler has a depth setting of 1/2", by using the brass extension rod. 

 

only 23 mortises to go...

Got bored this evening, between football games...so..

Did a wee bit of cutting & fitting...

Raised 10 panels on the tablesaw...fronts..and..

Back...then used one to layout out a couple mortises..

3 mortises  are done, and fitted up..next 3?

Need to be chopped....then the other stile need to be added..with it's own 6 mortises..

 

Might leave the insides rough?

As the only things that will see this view..will be the drawers sliding by

 

That will be enough "FUN" for a Saturday...

At the rate I'm going?   1.5 hours today..

 

5 raised panels are now smooth enough for Polite Company...

Get the worst of the rough sawn off with a new 80 grit sanding belt..then allow this to finish it off

Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11

 

Then 3 more mortises were done...and a clamped up Dry Fit was done..

Was after the foot profile was bandsawn....rough inside, yet..

Only things that will see that rough sawn look?   The sides of the drawers on their way by...

 

Clear this mess off, and...

Start on Stile #2  out of 4....

Had issues with the raised panel not fitting, last night...re-cut the rebates a bit..

As I was using a couple to check the layouts...and they decided to no longer fit...

And..I still managed to get 4 out of 6 mortises chopped into stile #2  

 

When I do get to the point of a glue up, will be watching the grain patterns on those panels a little better...kind of hap-hazard, right now

 

Today is a Monday...so..unless I get really bored..shop will be closed today..
