Drawers for a stand

Ok, here we go...I built that stand for my Benchtop  Drill Press...B)

936570968_DrillPressStandcompleted.JPG.0d07a5ccff249a7db7ce1d7d1b544462.JPG

A bit bare bones, but fits in the new space.  However, it does need some storage, and some extra weight.   Too narrow out in front, but, IF I can build a few drawers and slide them in on the side of the stand.....Hmmmm..:ChinScratch:

Went to the fellow with the barn of Ash 1 x 6s ...and bought 11 boards off of the rack....paid the guy $30 and headed home..:SaluteandRun:

1506662214_Newlumbersupplysideview.JPG.1104859413715f75ea4ba26cce09742d.JPG

Short boards are 48" long...the 4 tall ones are 74" long.   26 bft of Quarter sawn Ash...should be good for a couple Projects...

Hauled 4 of the 7/8" x 6" x 48" planks to the shop...and went about trimming out the worst of the defects..

390582331_BankofdrawersBADspot.JPG.458e9d8be055c045f44874e6d09ef25f.JPG

Like this messy end..and..:JawDrop:

1980999617_Bankofdrawerssplitends.JPG.ddec88e613d101ad3e1542907c62ff26.JPG

Had a bad case of "split ends"?..:BugEyeSmiley:..Other 3 planks were a bit better...so, after a rough cut here and there...:OldManSmiley:

1451693975_Bankofdrawersthegoodstuff.JPG.1dc02d8dc352300520c653882f5e9993.JPG

Edges were a tad wavy, though..:ChinScratch:

1948354358_Bankofdrawersdoingthewave.JPG.4d626c2134e1dfeab532b149cf439c71.JPG

Ya think? :ChinScratch: We have ways.    select the less wavy edge, to run along the rip fence,,

1921284341_Bankofdrawersripfence.JPG.c16f46739d4521830f5b070a49c7fbe9.JPG

Set the fence somewhere around 5" from the blade..run the "good" edge through..

1258481120_Bankofdrawersremovethewaves.JPG.2faf3c313784bf2bce4fafe6455b0724.JPG

Which gets most of the bad edge....two more times...one at 4-1/4" width, run the just ripped edge against the fence...last setting at 4" even..run the first edge through again...hopefully the edges are now straight, AND parallel...

671840788_Bankofdrawersriptofinalwidth.JPG.9e3b9394ec7f4260edd0564e04d7b503.JPG

And wind up with this stack.   Next, cut for length, WITH square ends...need 5 drawer fronts at 12" long, and 5 sides (ran out of lumber) at 10- 1/4" long..

1844299807_Bankofdrawerscuttolength.JPG.fa1f4acdcc96248063e4d46ff042a544.JPG

Still need 5 more sides, and 5 drawer backs....THAT will happen next time.  :Tapping:

Didn't like drawer sides at 7/8" thick...so...set up a kerfing saw..:OldManSmiley:

260063868_BankofdrawersKerfingsaw.JPG.cd6c07e6437ee9351bdf9959ec446803.JPG

Run all 4 edges through...blade will not reach all the way to the middle...so..:ChinScratch:

280230799_Bankofdrawersresawsaw.JPG.d7f9c19f8dd11e63d62ac190a9710d52.JPG

We have ways...aka..Cardio Workout.   Saw is a Disston D( no hyphen)8 rip saw...28" long, 5-1/2ppi....

1111899908_Bankofdrawerswastefallsoff.JPG.e7cdcb650dca9b1e80a4acf31057fc90.JPG

1/8" thin blank just flops over...next, get that ugly off..:MachineGun:

2126442817_Bankofdrawersflattening.JPG.02a613f2183f634145612586b140c615.JPG

No problem.  Across the grain for a bit, then with the grain..:ChinScratch:

97159185_Bankofdrawersthinnedsides.JPG.f78ff8f2b6f18cd8b7a8d05db35fc1df.JPG

Repeat 4 times...those marks left by the plane?   Iron had gotten tilted a hair...fixed that "problem"  no more tracks.:OldManSmiley:

2097639303_Bankofdrawers5sides5fronts.JPG.fd20ed836a5a5e06e4a10cec24734372.JPG

That where I stand, at the moment...5 drawer fronts..at 7/8" x 4" x 12"  and 5 drawer sides (out of 10) at 5/8" x 4" x 10-1/4":ChinScratch:

Need to haul a couple more planks to the shop, next time...have a bit more milling to do...:SaluteandRun:

Drawer fronts are an "Overlay" style...in that they will overhang the opening a bit on the ends.  then 1/2 blind dovetails.   Back of the drawers will sit in dados.  Bottom of the drawers will sit in grooves.   Drawers will ride in and out of the stand on hardwood runners.  Which means the sides of the drawers also get a groove to match.

Sound like "FUN", don't it?  :DevilLaughing:  Aught to give me something to do until April?:WonderScratch:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

Lovely bit of joinery! Inspiring! Choice crafting scraps as well!

Between the way you plane planks flat and @frenchwwr building the Moxon Vise, I'm moving into new plateaus of joinery :cowboy: My dovetail jig is backordered, no rush, I'll still want to build a bench. May give up sunny kitchen joinery for concrete-floored basement shop :ChinScratch:

So you're one of those guys eh? Actually I could stand to learn some skills with hand planes and such. I've bought a few old ones and cleaned them up and sharpened the cutters but have yet to spend the time actually trying to use them. Most of my attempts left me with either too thick a slice and uneven or barely crapping the top. Nice work Steve.

Looking good Steve. I wish I had a wood source like that.

2 more planks have gone to the shop...resulting in 5 more drawers sides...now have all 10 that I need.  The remains may go to making backs for the drawers, we'll see..:OldManSmiley:

Drawer fronts will see some work next time...rabbet on the ends, then 1/2 blind dovetail pins....and maybe a groove to hold the bottom of the drawers...:WonderScratch:

Legs are hurting, right now....Baker's Cyst behind the right knee and Uncle Charlie in the Left Calf....walking is not my "strongest suit" right now.:(

All 5/8" x 4" x 10-1/4" long.   Same as the 1st 5...more Cardio Workouts with that big OLD saw:rolleyes:

The 5 drawer fronts..got a rebate on each end..

Rebates were done with the tablesaw..:JawDrop:

Make a bunch of passes until the blank hits the fence..and this will be it for the tablesaw...for a while:ChinScratch:

had to re-arrange the shop just a bit...move the tablesaw out of the way, and bring out a different type of table..:WonderScratch:

And put it away...all done with the router. :SaluteandRun: Used one of the drawer fronts to make a "pattern" of sorts...was a bit too loose..adjusted that..

And knife a baseline...that I usually abuse.   Then saw and chop the waste...decided I had better check the fit into the stand..:OldManSmiley:

2 hours of shop time..knee said it was quitting time.   Sides for 2 drawers are done..

Stay tuned:cowboy:

And THAT was quite enough for today...Tomorrow I start with the grooves...and dados...and cussing..:ArguingSmileys:.still have to mill 5 backs for these drawers.

Grooves for 5 drawer fronts + 10 drawers sides....floor was getting a bit crunchy when I was walking around...shop fan was on high, trying to keep me cool(didn't work)  I push a plane using my right leg...right knee was NOT amused:ArguingSmileys:

So that's gonna be the excuse???

@Larry Buskirk told us about how you had to get your regular glasses, not those shop googles, to see you were trying to put an axe handle over your ear.

Gotta admit if you could get that axe handle to stay I'd be seriously impressed...  :D

I'm no ENT Specialist, nor portrayed one on TV, but making a SWAG diagnosis the reason you needed hearing aids is you were sticking sharpened pencils in your ears. I don't accept insurance, but do accept cash or credit card.

Was just sitting here, resting the knee...got bored...wanted a couple pictures from the shop...shouldn't hurt?    Except, as I walked past the stash of lumber on the way..the last 4' plank decided to come along, too.....I did get the pictures I was after..

1273732186_StanleyNo.3Type11rightside.JPG.d676b0b3562c826848b3711c080ddff1.JPG

Stanley No.3, Type 11, with original iron, too...and it is sitting ON the plank I brought to the shop....I should have just went back upstairs..but..

Tablesaw was pulled back into the shop and set up...goal was to cut the plank down to close to the size needed for 5 drawer backs..got 4 out of 5, had a spare.   Edges were a bot too rough and wavy...rip fence to correct that...width was also corrected at 3-5/8" wide..instead of 5-3/4"....saved the off-cuts..

At 7/8" thick..they were too thick for a drawer's back...Used the tablesaw as a kerfing saw, again...aka "Slim-Fast"...then a handsaw came out..

1708811118_Bankofdrawersresawbacks.JPG.61b1aa41a879372cf3a7e496e3464eda.JPG

Keep the 1/2" stuff, stash the 1/4" stuff...still ugly...we have ways..remember that hand plane?

1913659735_Bankofdrawersflattenbacks.JPG.31bbf3c4087a29889531ea276f25dedd.JPG

Like every other plane in the shop, it has to earn it's keep...

1055404730_Bankofdrawers5backsdone.JPG.638127e4e296078722b944931a5bb509.JPG

Didn't do too bad, either...stack these up..run the tablesaw some more...had some more ripping to do..

513521113_Bankofdrawersdrawerrunners.JPG.6d972299004f22e7643cf5976fb2eb67.JPG

Drawers will get a groove along the outside..those grooves will slide (in theory) on these "runners"  They are still a tad too fat...will put them on a diet, tomorrow...used these to lay out where a groove will be..

1606003331_Bankofdrawersrunnerlocation.JPG.847a82bedfab7d0c2f2686d47c491bd3.JPG

809770026_Bankofdrawersgroovefortherunnersstarted.JPG.b1eb26bf97bcad13d103635e370f1e8c.JPG

making sure the 2 sides match....plan is to let the Stanley 45s remove the waste..I hope...

Tablesaw had one more task to do...

502859861_Bankofdrawersdadosdone.JPG.dcedf6221efc8abce596319f5a8689a0.JPG

Backs need a place to call home...10 dados..

Figured THAT was quite enough for one day...more tomorrow, I can fire this old guy up...

1679416895_OldStanley45rightside.JPG.0552e5e17541e13b8377f4138a5bfad1.JPG

And see how it does...oh, and see about some panels for the bottoms of 5 drawers...

Stay tuned..
