I've also got planks which want flattening - they actually have drawer slide rails worn into them. Question - do the economy line Stanleys have different quality irons? Or should the Handyman get as sharp as my better planes? Maybe just not stay sharp as long?

March 24, 20224 yr Author Popular Post late night follies..got bored again...youtuba acting up...might as well go and do something...MESSY About 2" deep in the center... Ah, that's why...I don't have a dado blade for this saw, doubt if one would fit, anyway... Follow the trail... Bomb go off? Round up the Usual Suspects! Caught in the act? Chisel to snap the waste off.. Then the other 2 can level the floor a bit.. Depending on the direction of the grain. Final pass with the Stanley 45, Type 4...then a test fit... The runner get attached to the stand, and the drawer will (in theory ) slide in and out on the runners, using that groove.. Seemed to have dry fitted 2 of the drawers...and found out the drawer backs were a bit too long...and a couple were a bit ...thick... Bedtime this morning was after 0300 hrs....I gotta quit doing that.... Stay tuned....need to go out and BUY a 1/4" Luann Plywood panel 2' x 2'.....MIGHT be getting close to some assemble work..

That's a mighty handsome bit of work! My meager plane collection is jealous. A wasted emotion, I tell them. Better to concentrate on keeping their irons sharp!

March 24, 20224 yr Popular Post Steve, how often do you find yourself sharpening the plane irons? I’ve been fighting a few old boards today, trying to level out old drawer runner divots with a fresh iron, and just now decided to check the blade. Sure enough, it could have been sharper, and was after Method C (set it up, eat something, then try again). Do you get a wicked sharp edge the first time, and it works well a good long time? Are some irons more prone to not hold an edge for too long?
March 25, 20224 yr Author Popular Post usually between projects IF needed... usually sharpen it up fairly well while it is being rehabbed...after that it is on an as needed basis....once a year, maybe...
March 25, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Today was all about those runners....they needed to fit in the groove... and be either flush with the outside of the drawer side, or just a hair thinner...Stanley No. #3, again. Got all 10 done...thought I was done for today...errand to run...Plywood bought, and a new bulb for the bandsaw...$14 and change. Later, wanted to take a couple pictures....wound up doing a couple dry fits, with the four parts of the drawer... No glue, yet....still need to cut bottom panels. Shows a slight toe-in ? Better than being toe-out. Got 2 done like this...however..Drawer #4 had issues.. This is BOTH sides of the drawer...see anything wrong? These are supposed to be mirror images of each other...will need to fixed this one...the other 4 drawers do not have this issue...Ooops So...maybe tomorrow, I can fix No. 4...and cut 5 bottom panels....then see about spreading some glue? Hope I have enough clamps... The real fun will start when I go to hang these drawers on those runners... Anyone want to stop by and help out... Stay tuned..

That (once a year) may be a consensus among the hand plane experts. I was watching an episode of Roy Underhill's show some years back when Chris Schwartz was a guest. Roy asked about how often he (Schwartz) sharpened his planes and his reply was once a year.

March 26, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Time came today, for that sheet of plywood to get cut up...had to move a few things around..( welcome to my world..) Plywood was laying like that, to keep it dry... A suggestion was to use that bandsaw...fine....except for the sight line... Is blocked by that thing, aka , Langdon No. 75 Mitre Box and saw..it's fence lines up almost exactly with the bandsaw blade... Had to pull the tablesaw out quite a bit, to make sure I would get past the blade.. And stop BEFORE I hit that Stanley No. 346 Mitre Box...about an inch to spare..barely enough room out in front of the saw.. To get my fat body in there...and shove that panel through....needed to jig a hold down.. Attached to the High Tech Rip Fence.. Not too bad. Time to power up the saw and make the cut ( have heard that line, somewhere before?) Needed 10" in width, had the fence set a little wider, just in case...then I can adjust for final size. Cross cut: didn't need the fence. 5 parts at 9-3/8"...do a dry fit, mark the excess from the 10" side, reset the fence and run all 5 panels through..then a dry fit again.. Looks good. Got out a couple drills.. Little one for pilot holes, the other for counter sinks....and away we go... Taking a few more clamps than I thought..needed to drive 6 screws..snapped 3 off...letting the glue work to hold the back to the sides...set this mess aside... Back home after an errand to run GrandBRAT home...tried one more glue up.. Running LOW on clamps...set this aside.. And wait on the glue to dry.... Although..I did one more dry fit...and might do a fourth one later... Stay tuned...cussing has only just begun..
March 26, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Late night.....2 drawers out of the clamps, one drawer back into the clamps...4th drawer dry fitted. Seems the 2x4 sin the back have bowed inwards...will have to fix, BEFORE any runners can be installed....will add a spreader, then screw a back in place to KEEP the legs that way....more cussing....and a BIGGER hammer..will be needed... Stay tuned...going to get pretty LOUD later..
March 26, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Ok..glue-up #3.. Needs the clamps removed, and it needs to get off of my tablesaw...cut a stick, that exactly matched the front opening for these drawers...held it around in back.. Yep..bowed in THAT much..needed The Adjuster... Was having trouble getting a "good" swing....un-bolted the drill press.. Set it aside, for now ( sitting on a piece of plywood, of coarse) plopped the stand on top of the tablesaw, and clamped it there...finally got the spacer vertical..let it sit there for a bit...had 3 drawers to clean up, and a 4th to glue up... Redid the screws holding the sides to the back of a couple of the drawers...then fine tuned the runner grooves a bit.. A few high spots...router can't quite go all the way to the end, as is..but, we have ways... And check again.. Will trim for length, later... Front of each drawer gets a bevel on all 4 edges...Stanley No. 3 to rough it in...sander to smooth things down,,,decided to glue up a 4th drawer.. Hmmm, check for square.. Pull until it IS square. Back to the other drawers...used one to keep checking for sticking points...sander to remove...Thought I could install a few runners, once the drawers worked.. Squared across,,2 screws..turned out this was a hair too low...had to move it up about an 1/8".. When I installed the second runner...too much gappiness going on...That dang spacer bar is right where the next runner would be...moved to the bottom drawer...it was even Drawer #5! Been 3 hours to get this far...right knee decided it was now "Quitting Time!" Sitting with an ice pack under my knee...Will have Laundry Detail later to day..will see.. Stay tuned..
March 27, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Laundry detail, last night...other side's runners are installed...found a use for a panel from IKEA.. Might be a Metric 1/4" thick? Test fitted Drawer #1...did not go well.. Being pulled into square, now...because I missed one step during it's glue up.. To check for square....if'n it ain't, pull until it is.... Last dry fit.. Lumber is supposed to be Ash...Hmmm, seems to be a bit ...curly... And..the last drawer is in the clamps... used two runners, as cauls to clamp in the centers of the sides. Yes, I checked for square..and had to pull this one.. With the back screwed in place on the stand...I could knock that spacer bar out. Just need to install the runners for the last 2 drawers, sometime. Stay tuned...
