August 9, 20214 yr Author After we finished the baking station we started on the pantry & frig cabinets. I bring the upper and Patti says she doesn't like the mismatched doors, sorry pic is sideways. I told her I didn't like the bowed door 1/8" in 18". Set them aside & remove the doors from the frig cabinet. Frig cabinet bottom has some damage so I can just flip it. No such luck, the back is extending below the side. Lightbulb turns on & realize the problems are on opposite corners. Take a cross measurement on the face frame and see that we are not square by 3/8". Check the pantry cabinet and it's out by the same 3/8" but in the opposing direction. Two replacement cabinets will be here in a month. Thanks Murph. Moving on.
August 10, 20214 yr .............and nothing will be wrong with them? This kind of sh<> sucks. No quality control? They can't say they are moving too fast.
August 10, 20214 yr Popular Post The whole project is looking very good Bob. It does suck about the cabinetry (lack of) QC though. Are new appliances scheduled to be delivered soon?

I looked at the back of the glides and see the white support with one screw and think this may be due to the shipping process, snap it back into the hole, quick fix. I look at the front of the glide and find that the screws are not completely seated, more than a dozen. No pride, just get it done. 12 hours ago, Cal said: Are new appliances scheduled to be delivered soon? Only the dishwasher is new, lost three of those to marriage. She is happy with her convection oven and I'm still shopping for a refrigerator.

Quite by chance - I had not given it any thought - our ice & water dispenser on the front of the door is tall enough for a large yeti style mug to fit. The SIL's and BIL that use those mugs constantly comment on how great that is. At their homes they have to tilt the mug and hold it in place while it's being filled. The downside to our GE is that we have been cautioned that we "must" use the GE water filter for it to operate properly... and guess what, they are the most expensive filter in the lot...
August 28, 20214 yr Author Popular Post We have been working on a shorter list of things to bring this project to a close. Counter tops have been ordered & my hope is complete by next week, the tile guy is ready to install the backsplash above the counters & behind the stove. Plumbing is complete up to the sink install and using Pex for me is the way to go. Dishwasher is in place and needs a countertop and drain hook up to be complete. Stove and vent are in place temporarily and will be permanent after the tile install. No trim around the window near the stove, just a sill. Still waiting on 2 replacement wall cabinets , above frig & counter next to it. New baseboards where needed and 1/4 round through-out. Replaced the ceiling panels & LEDs in the eating area & polished up the fan. LEDs are 3" and finish at 4 1/2" wide. I used a 3 1/2" hole saw for the fixture and the j-box with driver is 3" wide. When I did the hard top ceiling in the new section I was able to leave my fixture wire above the drywall, tape, mud & paint then go back and drill the locations of my fixtures. I made my connections in the j-box below the ceiling, connect the light, slide everything in to place. Need to make 4 floating shelves but the heat & humidity is keeping me out of the shop for now.
August 28, 20214 yr Well done, and it's always good to see the end of such a job. Well done! It even looks like you managed to find a dishwasher in these days of appliance shortages.

If I may make a suggestion, in this pic the black box hanging off what appears to be the rear sink cabinet. This looks like a battery operated faucet control. If those answers are both yes, I want to suggest moving it, and not actually mounting it until the sink and plumbing is installed. That looks like the controller that I have, and kinda mounted in the same location. It is a real PIA to change the batteries. I am sure part of my problem are the hinges I used on the cabinet, they only allow the doors to open 90*. "One day" I may move that thing over to the side...
August 29, 20214 yr Author Popular Post @Fred W. Hargis Jr we ordered the dishwasher on April 10th and it only took 15 weeks to be delivered, fast efficient service no matter how long it takes. @Cal looks like the same. I went lower with the location this time and I hope it's better. I'll agree it's a PITA to change batteries. I did learn since having this faucet in the old sink to be sure that the water dept. isn't working in the area before changing the batteries @HandyDan The smell of something cooking in the oven makes a house a home.
August 29, 20214 yr Popular Post I been watching all the pictures you been posting and I'll bet you guys are glad to see the finish line is getting where it is crossable soon. Very nice work... We were in the big city of Abilene, Tx last week and the Toyota Dealership has only a small handful of new anythings. I was curious and it is computer chips that is stopping the flo of any kind of new vehicles?
August 30, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Thanks @Smallpatch. There was that "what was I thinking" moment early on but by then we were commited. Going from a 72 sq. ft space with 6' of counter to 150 sq. ft. & 20' of counter will allow two cooks in the kitchen and we won't have to do the tag team routine anymore.
September 7, 20214 yr Popular Post Bob, I've been quietly watching this project for months. You have done a great job and it's looking like you will be able to celebrate very soon. Looks wonderful ! Edited September 7, 20214 yr by Al B
September 7, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Thanks @Al B I appreciate that. Getting the idea out of my head and seeing it come together has made it easier for the brain to sleep at night. I did install the 2 upper cabinets & all the door & drawer pulls the other day. Made a marking jig out of some scrap and a couple of sharpened bolts. I tacked a scrap board to the edge of the jig and centered it on the face left & right and that placed the handles 3 1/4" down from the top of the drawers. Tap each bolt with a hammer and it left a mark for the brad point drill bit. We stayed the same on the taller drawer fronts so we don't have to reach down as far. I removed the scrap board and glued a piece to the oppisite side and this placed the handles on the doors 1 1/2" from the edge.
September 10, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Countertops installed. Set the sink in to check fit, I'll mount the faucet and install permenently after the tile is installed. Blue tape shows the 9' counter space with a double sink that we use to have. Went with a single sink and that leaves 5' of counter left & right. Her baking station in 8' to the corner. We gained 72 sq. ft. & 16' of countertop space.
September 10, 20214 yr Looking better, the counter tops are giving it that finished look. A little closer to the end.
September 11, 20214 yr Looking real nice Bob! That additional space and counter length will really add to the usefulness and enjoyment of the whole kitchen
October 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Well thanks to Patti's "we got this" attitude & youtube we completed our tile backsplash. Installed the tile over three days doing a row at a time. I think using the basket weave pattern was more forgiving than a straight subway pattern. We purchased 7 boxes of 3"x6" tiles, 560 total, and used around 500. Added some color with 6"x6" colbalt blue tiles, color match to her kitchenaid mixer. When I installed the window sills I left a 3/8" gap from the wall to let the tile guy cut the tile square around the window and slide it behind the sill. He didn't benefit from that but I did. I made a jig to hold the tile in place with some scrap plywood and used a 4" diamond wheel and my grinder to cut the odd shaped pieces around the windows & receptacles. Straight tiles were cut with a $24.00 tile cutter. Broke a few but overall it was a success. Did the grout over a 2 day period and then sealed it. Waterproof between countertops and tile. Installed the sink, plumbing and hooked up the dishwasher. Cut the chimney for the hood vent to size and installed the hood. New gas line for the stove will be next week and hope to be cooking by the weekend. We can see not just the light but the end of the tunnel.
