February 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Great progress. My only experience with taper legs only had the taper starting below the skirt so there wasn't an issue. Just had to make sure the legs were orientated the same before securing.
February 13, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Been a little distracted reorganizing the area around the lathe and wood storage this week so progress has been slow. Got the drawer faces recess cut done. Had to place the supports to attach under drawer slides and center support for the front rails. Ok could not resist a peek at how they will look before routing the edges. Time to rip the drawer sides to height . Now you cannot see what the bit is doing but this is cutting the dovetail recess for drawer sides in fronts. Time to finish the day with cutting the sliding dovetails in drawer sides. Hey if I get lucky may have drawers ready to assemble tomorrow.
February 13, 20215 yr Popular Post It is all about the details that pull it together nice and neat. Looks good so far.
February 14, 20215 yr Author Popular Post One day closer cutting dados for bottom , using 1/2 inch ply, in sides and front. Then cut the dado for the back of drawer in the side panels. That is when the ut roh happened and blew out the back of one panel so searched for some scrape and glued that in and will recut tomorrow.
February 17, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Getting close to finish. Had some problems with the sliding dovetail joint on one drawer and a repair of a miscut dado on a side. This is the repair for the miscut. Just routed it straight and the cut the dado correctly. Cut the edges of the drawer faces with a French Tabletop bit. Could not get the full profile but it did most of what I wanted. Yes that is a lot of clamps on that one drawer. Remember I said a problem existed. Well this is to hold those pieces tight to the drawer. Plan to put some pinnails in there also.
February 18, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Had a fair day in shop and the rain is melting the ice. Got the drawers out of clamps and mounted . Then the board I had thought was Walnut if 19 inch wide Mahogany. The wife has decided she would rather have Walnut top so I have to mill up some and make the top. Gee this is fun, Just when I was getting close. Well may be next week on that. Got to get ready for a turning club demo Saturday.

Gerald, Interesting project and I've been following along as it progresses. I had not considered doing sliding dovetails for draws before and that's really peeked my interest. I'll need to do some investigation and see what I can find on that process. Just not sure how well I can make that dovetail in plywood. I have some scrap so may be the time to find out......

February 19, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Don't think I got a chance to post yesterday so we have two days , well half days. @Gene Howe A Figure 8 fastener looks like a eight and has a beveled hole pointing up and one pointing down. You use a Forstner to drill a shallow hole in the edge of the drawer or cabinet box and place the fastener in it . Then place the top on and screw thru the other hole. @sreilly24590I have done the sliding dovetail with 1/2 ply for drawer sides and solids form the front. This allows the drawer face to inset into the cabinet without needing that extra piece in front of box . It is a little tricky getting the cuts right but the drawer front is indexed perfect to front of cabinet. Cut the drawer fronts with a French Table Apron bit and will use the same on the top. Installed the drawers and now ready for the top. After I pulled out the small amount of walnut I have it was just enough for the top . Looking at this lumber was very glad the wife did not like the mahogany .
March 13, 20215 yr Author Popular Post The last word is finally in. Used General Finishes Arm-R-Seal semi gloss and was impressed. Brushed on easily and even tho there were some bubbles after application the quickly disappeared. Next to last construction rash was mounting the top. Used figure eight fasteners for this. Now for the final shop picture
March 13, 20215 yr Beautiful work. Used GF semi gloss on some dividers recently. Like you I was happy with the final result.
March 14, 20215 yr It's always gratifying when a piece comes together and you're both happy with the results. Congrats on a fien project and very well documented.
March 14, 20215 yr Gerald, that is a beautiful piece and I really like the color combinations and drawer pulls. I need to learn to make those. Another fiiiinnneeee piece by Gerald.
March 14, 20215 yr That’s like perfect. I’d be afraid to use it, looks more like a piece of art that needs to be admired, than to use.
