Well after the wife told me she wanted a coffee bar I tried to procrastinate. Bought the lumber 4 months ago and finally this week started building. Already had the walnut for top and legs so started with that,

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So this quick and dirty taper jig sees service. Have plenty of these clamps and they worked great for this.

Very nice indeed. Walnut is one of my favorite woods along with maple. I haven't used walnut since, well a few years...maybe more. The workbench reminds me that I need to get back to learning how to use those hand planes I've been working on.

4 months is about the proper amount of time for the stock to acclimate. Tell Her now that you've rough cut it the experts on this site say it needs to for 12.5 weeks to make sure the stock is stable

Well this has not been my week for shop work. Been getting records ready for change of woodturning club Treasurer (me) to someone else. Then the committee decided we needed to get a computer for him, The one I have is for our video productions. But all that aside I did mark out the 16 mortises and tested one for drill press. That worked well . So today will be more drilling and then cleanup with the Narex mortising chisels.

 

 

 

Now off to the shop for more

Bummer , got the computer in for the new treasurer. Got it all set up and then discovered a Chromebook runs Linux and that id not compatable with Quicken. Oh well back to square one.

 

Got all the mortises drilled and started cleaning them up. Totally finished one and half of another cleaned up.

Since these mortises are almost directly opposed there may be a slight overlap requiring cutting an angle on the tenon so both will fit. The side is 3/4 deep and the front and back 1 inch deep.

Yes, that surprises a lot of people. Between that and the limited memory/HDD space on some models Chrome books can really struggle doing anything but the most basic tasks. IF you were using Quicken 2017 or before, the newer subscription might work, not sure because I refuse to pay Intuit a subscription fee for simple checking accounts.

Thanks @lew for the link. I have also gotten frustrated , ok maybe too light of a word, with Quicken. They keep wanting you to do this or that and it is a pain. Just for checkbook and download credit card data, Oh Boy.

Cutting the excess off the tenon with a pull saw. Don't just love this saw but it does leave fewer marks and is a small kerf. Got out the old 45 which I got just before I slowed down on doing flatwork. It worked admirably well and I learned a bit more about using it.

 

 

Cleaning up the tenon a bit more and had to stop and come in for a meeting.

Today's progress is not a lot but I am not in any hurry to get to the end. Tenons on the box ends done. Not the best I have done but the first I have done completely by hand.

Sanding time but that is no fun. Needed sanding discs so used a giftcard and got some Diablo as they do not stock my preferred Norton 3X anymore, Bummer. Do not really like the Diablo and the universal pattern does not work on PC 5 hole sander. I feel ya on the Diablo.  Have some the neighbor gave me and use it but when I want it smooth and not to change paper every few minutes I use the good stuff.

Stay away from red woodworking stuff with Italian names.

When I went to my local dealer for some sandpaper, they no longer stock the Norton, Shopsmith or similar papers.  They used to carry a line by Festool that was just like Norton and Shopsmith but now it is all red garnet.  It works ok, but not as durable as the white grits.  I prefer the garnets for finishing sandings.  I am not a sanding nut, but I sure do like the results of a good sanding.  It is a tedious job.
