We hope you all have a wonderful and memorable Thanksgiving, as a nation we have much to be thankful for, this is the time of the year when we see great deeds being done from one American to another, charities and Americans giving, neighbors helping one another, families coming together.

Freedom From Want

Freedom from Want is the third in a series of four oil paintings entitled Four Freedoms by Norman Rockwell. They were inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt's State of the Union Address, known as Four Freedoms, delivered to the 77th United States Congress on January 6, 1941. In the early 1940s, Roosevelt's Four Freedoms themes were still vague and abstract to many, but the government used them to help boost patriotism. The Four Freedoms' theme was eventually incorporated into the Atlantic Charter, and it became part of the charter of the United Nations. The series of paintings ran in The Saturday Evening Post accompanied by essays from noted writers on four consecutive weeks: Freedom of Speech (February 20), Freedom of Worship (February 27), Freedom from Want (March 6), and Freedom from Fear (March 13). Eventually, the series was widely distributed in poster form and became instrumental in the U.S. Government War Bond Drive.

 

The painting shows an aproned matriarch presenting a roasted turkey to a family of several generations, in Rockwell's idealistic presentation of family values. The patriarch looks on with fondness and approval from the head of the table, which is the central element of the painting. Its creased tablecloth shows that this is a special occasion for "sharing what we have with those we love", according to Lennie Bennett. The table has a bowl of fruit, celery, pickles, and what appears to be cranberry sauce. There is a covered silver serving dish that would traditionally hold potatoes, according to Richard Halpern, but Bennett describes this as a covered casserole dish. The servings are less prominent than the presentation of white linen, white plates and water-filled glasses. The people in the painting are not yet eating, and the painting contrasts the empty plates and vacant space in their midst with images of overabundance. Source: Freedom From Want

On a lighter note, I have never really looked very close at a Rockwell painting.  In this one I must say that is one big bird!  And very small legs!  And what's with the babies face in the fruit bowl?

 

But over the weekend I did get a tool box painted, I did get the brake job done on B-I-L's car, I did get a set of picture trays made.

Looking ahead; apply some color and finish the pic trays, add felt to the aforementioned tool box drawers, likely work on a new mirror etching and frame for the mbr; and, of course, eating a bit too much on Thursday.  It will be a pretty quiet Thursday without much family here - but we will be thankful for the health and bounty we have had this year.

Prepping for Thanksgiving this week. I do the cooking (mostly) and will still be doing the big bird even though it's only Marie and I. Since we've asked the kids not to drop anything off (dinner dishes) I'll have more to fix than normal. One the other hand we will be packing some turkey/dressing for them to take, and I'll make them a batch of Fanny Farmer mac N Cheese.

Sorting through lumber stash to see if I have enough to make a pair of machine benches.

Probably will eat to much on Thursday, but I could stand to gain a bit of weight. Lost 10 pounds somewhere down below 150.

New house is a mess. Replacing 100 sq. ft. of carpeting with vinyl plank flooring. So, no turkey at gramma's place, this year. We may opt for a restaurant meal, this year. 

As soon as the flooring is done, we'll bring a lot of HHG from the shop to the house. Maybe then, I can start shop organization in earnest. Got a lot of wiring and insulation to get done, too. 

 

More cabinet work in the media room and then a crew arriving this afternoon to help me deal with an 800 + pound lathe package that is arriving. 

Yeah this about sums up this morning. Customer says just started driving weird.

About 10 years ago, the Missus and me went out to Stockbridge Mass for a weekend. Visited the Norman Rockwell Museum. Loved it! Want to go back again. He was a very interesting man. I’m busy with any free time down in the shop, working on some Kissmass trees from the Woodcraft Magazine

Started getting hedges ready for decoration today. Maybe lay in power tomorrow and possibly add a few lights.

 

Been having problems with shop stereo so went looking for used before buying new. Found a Pioneer for 15 but had to go home for speaker and sound source to test. It works so went home with me. Well one last time before tearing everything down check connections. Turns out I am using a three wire cable but only two needed , WOULDN'T you know it one is the wrong one. Old stereo works still so now have a reserve. Good thing I did not order that $80 one today.

John to settle your mind using the .com is easy to remember and sounds better than square,site to which it is rerouted. Cost is ZERO except for annual domain fee. In order to change it Square charges a fee. I am making nothing from the website it is just a front for what I do at craft shows and demos and if someone wants to know what I make lots of it is there.

Like Cal and Fred, catching up on loose ends projects.  Finishing up the rolling pins - 3 styles.  Got the Epoxy Wood pasted applied today.  Plan to sand it tomorrow, then sand the ends.  Will get the ends sanded tomorrow and coat a couple of times with mineral oil.  Will burn a year and USA into one end.  

 

And, will do all the cooking.  Will try to keep her out of the kitchen as she moves stuff, can't remember where she puts it, gets in the way and a whole bunch of confusion.  Will be making from scratch mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes, sweet potato casserole, and I hope to find a recipe to make a pie crust so I can make a couple of pies - one pecan and one pumpkin.  

 

On Friday, will shop at Harbor Freight for an air compressor for son's Christmas gift.  Will shop at Walmart.com or Amazon for space legos.  Santa has begun in earnest to get his list complete.  Will turn a couple of pens for neighbors on Thursday.  It is a piece of framing that is over 100 years old.  I hope it turns ok.  He wants a thick on and she wants a thin one.  A relaxing week.  LOL

Inner tie rod end. Attaches to end of rack and pinion.

 

 

Got home yesterday after long day doing 3 timing belt jobs. Daughter has been in hospital so had to deal with ex over last few days. I'm beat, need a recharge.

 

Wham.  Got a package.  Opened up and this was inside.

 

 

What a blessing.

Hope your daughter is improving Gunny. Sad to have to deal with the ex, but it was important. Looks like the day ended well.
