Attempted another turning for a Xmas but sometimes it doesn’t work out. Wife says it looks like a dog bowl and I fear she is right. Maybe I’ll give it to my least favorite nephew 😎

Put a plate in it and a plant on top and you have a utilitarian object. Love the color of mahogany but hate to do finish with all that open grain.

My wife came up with an interesting option for the turning. She ordered a crystal ball for it.

Now you get to specialize in crystal ball holders. I think that is one cool idea. Are crystal balls expensive?

She said she found it on the net for $18

I’m going to have to put it back on the lathe and get that burn mark out that’s on the top. Zebra wood is difficult to turn in that way because those marks don’t show up until you put the finish on. I should have put some alcohol on it first which will bring them out before you finish it. Oh well 😔

Thanks for the tip about the alcohol revealing burn marks.

I've seen people use alcohol burning for burning touch marks into steel knives when they are finished off it actually turns out quite nicely.  Acid Etching I think is the proper term for it....

Getting down to the wire with more gifts to make. Did a cutting board today for our neighbors. Also another crystal ball arrived for that small turning I made.

I started this turning in the new lathe topic but am moving it over here. It is going to be an Xmas present for a friend. All done with one coat of finish on.

Very big and nicely turned.  I like it.  How did the new lathe feel?

It has a nice feel to it. Very vibration free. Less chatter from the tool than the SS. I have had to adjust my grip and stance due to the change in height but that is just a matter of time to get used to it. The butt end of the chisel handle now is against my ribs instead of at my waist which changes the angle of my right arm. At this point the control of the chisel is different and my right arm gets fatigued easier but all in all I like it. It also goes much slower than the SS which is nice. At 25 rpm applying finish is much easier.
Paul

 Wow, looks great.
