April 24, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Started off like it was a Monday..... Ok, weather cleared off, went up into the 60s.....Picked up the van, then went and bought a new bandsaw blade, and a 2' x 4' sheet of 1/4" plywood. Decided to try my luck in the my shop....at least I know which end of the van is the FRONT. So...opened a case... Hmm, where'd it go ( wound up pulling the woodie, as well) There it is...had to assemble it, then adjust it for a rebate I needed done....to house the plywood back of the case. There was a problem.. . Guess where the rebate needed to go....yep, right through that knot... Sharp conquers all. Then the second long side got it's matching rebate ( was an easy one, too) Then decided some dovetails could be done...so...mark out the pins, and saw a little bit.. Then make sure I cut the right angles... Then chop 1/2 way through.. Chisel is a Witherby...mallet from Wall E World....then flip this over.. A skinny chisel helps out. Problem is that circled corner. I don't want that groove to show...so, when I laid out the tails..there was a special cut, going on Right there. This will cover the end of the groove. Chisel to remove all the waste...dry fit? What groove? Tail board is cupped a bit...so, when I do the glue ups, will clamp and caul right in the center of that bow. otherwise, corner fits. One corner dovetailed, 3 rebates done....Now, IF I can remember how I did all of this....I might get another corner done...tomorrow.... had to use that Millers Falls No. 11 as a small Jointer, as the side and the "bottom" panel didn't match up, width wise, imagine that. Floor was getting messy.. Between the chips from the Wards 78, and the chunks from doing the dovetails....was getting hard on the feet. Swept the shop, and closed up Sat down at my computer...and promptly took an hour long nap IN the chair....was one of them days Stay tuned..
April 26, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ok...Tired, and worn out...put about 2 days worth of work into one afternoon...back is sore....so....a B EE RR U N was undertaken tonight. Was running low on a few other items, too. After about an hour in the shop..Lunch Break....HUGE Reuben Sammich. waited for that to settle through...then about 4 more hours IN the shop....Started off with corner #2 getting dovetailed... Tools to do a bit of layout with..and, since I do the pins first... laid them out ( maybe a little Dovetail 101?) Combo square to carry the lines down both faces...then lower the board down into the Dovetail Center saw is a Disston No. 4...saw the lines.. Takes about 8 full length strokes to make each cut.....Then clamp the board on the bench.. Used these two to make a Knife Wall baseline...something for the chisels to start at.. If I start on the outside face first ( the show side) I tend to get better results. I leave that little tab out on the end, for support..as I then turn the board over.. And finish the chisel work from the inside face...less of a chance of a blow-out. I then use these Pins to layout out the tails, and that special corner... Where the red circle is. Then over to the bandsaw to make a few cuts, trying to leave the lines... Then the chisels again. Dry fit was...special...way too tight, had to pare a few spots, and fix a split...grrrr.. Trimmed the special corner a bit, for a better fit.. Then worked on the next corner...decided to work on corner #4...will do #3 tomorrow..repeat all the above steps, except tail board/Top needed a rebate, before I could lay out the tails..so, Wards 78 came back out... Figures, had to run the 78 against the grain....had to also use a way to clamp the board to the bench..FLAT... Kind of hard, when trying to chop out the waste, when the board wants to bounce around...was finally able to dry fit corner #4... No splits! Which leave corner number 3 for tomorrow.. wanted both a top and a bottom fitted to one side...and at least one top or bottom fitted to both sides.. To measure for the length of the saw holders...needed the distance between the rebates. then used a saw to locate where the top holder was going.... Good thing I wanted to angle the holder a bit....to better hold the saws in place..angled towards the top, so I needed to find out how much clearance I needed for the horns of the saw handles...the other holder was easier...maybe 5" up from the toe of the saw...didn't need to angle it.. Will need to bevel the top one a bit... Maybe? Dados will be chopped, sawn and router planed....that big old knot will make things FUN..not. So, have one more corner to dovetail...4 dados to chop out, and then size the back panel to fit....before any glue ups can happen...about....Monday Have the feeling, that glue up event WILL involve some cussing? Stay tuned...
April 26, 20206 yr Popular Post You're unbelievable Steve. Seems like the more pain you're in, the harder you you push. Take it easy! Slow down and enjoy that B EE RR.
April 26, 20206 yr Popular Post I had to make a beer run before I got done reading all that. Man am I pooped!!!
April 27, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Strange start for today....went over to the Local ER...seems I have a couple spider bites on the right arm acting up. Got the two spots checked out, got a pill bottle for my troubles. Figured I could start up in the shop after that...Was pounding away, chopping pins for the last corner. Craig shows up in the shop, wanting a stick of 80-20 cut into a bunch of short parts, for a case he was building..... I also used the tablesaw for a bit, before that.. Ganged up the two saw holders, and cut the rest of the slots.. Looks like the til will hold 14 full sized saws....might be enough. We then used that tablesaw to cut the parts for craig's project. little silver chips everywhere. Got that done...BTW, today's follies are brought to you by.. I don't allow booze in the shop, this will just have to do... Pins were done, tails were next.. Used the pins to lay out these..bandsaw made the cuts...then.. Chopped half way down, on the outside face...trying to get that corner just right.. Then flip over, and finish the chopping up.. Looks good? Well tried a dry fit...had to pare a few places that were way too tight...was finally getting things to fit... ah-yep....Snapped it right off...had pared the wrong spots...so, glue and a clamp, til morning. Also filled a huge crack in that knot...take a guess where that silver colour came from... Decided to at least get all four corners together for a big dry fit.... This is the side the door will be on. Dry run of a couple clamps.. Checking how well some of the gaps will close up, during a glue up... Have a few places that could be better...will clean them up, while digging the dados out. And that was that, for today. 2.5 hours IN the shop. not too bad for a Sunday. NOW I can switch over to the Guinness...while a Bug Bomb goes to work in the shop...may need a few more "bombs" to get rid of the pests. Time to kick back and just sit for the night. Stay tuned
April 27, 20206 yr Popular Post Coming along well, had to know something would show up and slow it down a bit. In your case spiders, ah figures Father Murphy is a mean %^$^&. I had trouble with bugs under a building out back. Bought a 3 pack kit and lit one up one night. OMG the dead bugs coming out of every crevice. Cats were not happy. Got rid of the dead bodies, and thought better make sure. So two days later, hit it again. Not nearly the massacre as the first time but still had some around. Gave it two more days and HIT IT AGAIN. Gotta make sure right? Hardly any, declared the pest problem resolved for the time being.
April 27, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Hate those "Ranger Spiders" the kind that "repels" down from the joists overhead.....and stops right about nose level The Black, fuzzy Wolf Spiders seem to stay on the floor....squish....their bad luck. Will see how things look in the morning...
April 27, 20206 yr A low tech solution is to take a tarp and start from one end and work across the ceiling, using a staple gun. Silver helps reflect the light better. May not be prettiest girl at the ball, but she will turn a head or two. I have pegboard on my ceiling, again it works but I do plan on replacing it one day with solid 1/4 plywood painted white. Another time consuming task. Yeah, it can wait no hurry.
April 27, 20206 yr Author Popular Post For some strange reason.....went back to the shop a bit ago....took the dry fit apart. Fixed all the gap-toothed dovtails, until there were no gaps. Then....clamped one side onto the bench... Needed one more clamp....to cure that "bounce" thingy....Dados were laid out... Like that knot? Cut a pair of knife walls along the sides of the dado. 18mm chisel to dig a square hole... square hole is for the toe of the saw...sawed the walls of the dado.... Chisel and mallet to pop 90% of the waste out... installed the 1/2" wide cutter in the Stanley 71-1/2....set the depth to match the rebate....and plowed the floor of the dado level and smooth... Wash, rinse, and repeat 3 times..until you get here, the last of the 4 dados. Then set everything aside, sweep up all them BIG chips all over the floor...and then close the shop..again Stay tuned....Monday MIGHT involve glue and clamps...or..cutting a plywood panel...right now, I need a Cold One!
April 28, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Late night, last night....kept thinking Dangerous, I know.. About HOW to measure AND cut that plywood back panel to size.....waited a while.....until the clock on the wall said it was now TUESDAY!Headed for the shop... Tried several ways of laying out the cuts on the 2' x 4' panel of 1/4" Pine plywood....finally, just did a full dry fit, holders and all....Then measured and laid out the two cuts needed. Circular saw and the speedsquare to make the cross cut on the end ( was too long for the tablesaw to do) Length went from 48" down to 32-1/4".....Not sure which was loudest..the saws, or the cussing going on....moved that case out of the way, and set up the speed square/tablesaw fence...width was then reduced down from 24" wide to 19-5/8" wide.. Check for fit....more thinking.. Out came the glue and the clamps. First off, where to do the glue up at..... Maybe IF I turn the tablesaw around a bit, so my fat body can get by...then lay some spares of plywood on top of the tablesaw....hmmm... Mallet to "adjust" a couple spots...set the 4 sides up on the "platform" and started to install the holders....something wasn't quite right ah...had them in the wrong dados...had to remember which way was "UP" 0300..give me break...Forest of clamps showed up... I merely laid the back in there....not attached, YET...after this picture was taken...2 more clamps appeared...can never have too many, right It was now about 0400hrs...time to close for the morning....letting this mess sit a while. That big "Rising Sun" knot on the one side..had bowed the side in So, I'll have to figure a way to "un-bow" it, in order to install the back... Stay tuned.. I need a nap..

April 28, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Roh-Kay, Raggy...started at 1430...ending at 1530... The Forest of clamps.. Removed these...no creaks, cracks or pops to be heard...at least from the case... Out of the clamps,,,lay it down, bead of glue all around .. Hammer assist to get the panel in place, then nailed off.. Weird pattern, almost like an angry face? Cleaned all the corners up.. Test fitted the saws....Old Saw till was moved out.. New plywood base laid down..( looks better than the old osb) Had to clear everything out of the way, including the tablesaw, and sweep the floor where it was sitting...I added a 1x1 bar under the new til Yes, I carried this thing over to it's new home, and fastened it down TIGHT. waiting on me to make the door...that mitre box? Stanley No. 346 Mitre Box and saw 4" x 26" one of my "spares" So...just waiting on the door to get made, and installed.... Stay tuned..
April 30, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Ever get an idea....sitting there day-dreaming, about HOW to do a task....then to make sure you don't forget it in the morning...you rush right out ( or, down) and give it a try? I have to stop doing that....but...the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has neither a "Save" button...or a good "Memory Card"... Seems I figured out how that door could be built....needed to find an angle, needed some measurement ( and spend 10 minutes looking for that ....tape measure I had just used) and even figured out the joints to use and...even wrote some of this down on a sketch which makes it a "Plan"? Well, IF that paper plan hasn't been stolen by a Mr. Boris Badanov , maybe I can build a door, next? Stay tuned...hmmmm. Late Night with...
