Popular Post steven newman Posted March 25, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted March 25, 2020 Ok...besides laying flooring to finish a hallway to day.. And..without doing a face-plant, to boot...took a break. Then meandered to the shop... Hmmm, something missing... And a few things here, too....turn to the right, about..110 degrees, or so... Red shelf, came from Wal E World..years ago...I even had to clean it up Boxes for the Stanley #45 and #71-1/2.. Squares, coping saws, marking gauges, a tape measure trying to hide... Spokeshaves (2) dovetail saws,Hand saw is a Disston D8 20" panel saw, 10 ppi. Tool rack is about half full... Still a few empty spots...3 hacksaws? There are just 6 brace drills in the case...two 6" sweeps, an 8", a 10" a 12" and a 14" sweep. Other ones have been stored. C clamps have their own spot to call home...as do the hammers... And a few planes, of course.... Work in Progress....may get adjusted as time goes by. Need to start building the doors for this case.... Stay tuned... HARO50, p_toad, Cal and 2 others 5 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted March 26, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted March 26, 2020 Ok...are we ready to take a tour of the new tool home? Here we go...."Remember to keep your arms and hands inside the car at all times during the trip"... Starting in the bottom left corner...then..looking up to the upper left corner.. Just a few drills and things..then looking at the center of things... And, what is just below this mess.. These two are sitting around, waiting on the door to be made, so they can just hang out...moving on.. Upper right corner...had to make a rack for the set of expansive bits..and then the bottom of this corner.. That box is full of screws and other hardware...including the hinges for the doors...had a few new arrivals show up.. Including a couple small screwdrivers. the dovetail saws are in there, now. Should be enough to get started with? need to go and buy a couple STRAIGHT 1 x 4s...and build the doors...and keep the dust out... Stay tuned. Hope you enjoyed the 5 cent tour... Gunny Posted March 26, 2020 Report Posted March 26, 2020 Came out nicely!!! Plenty of stuff organized in a very small space. NICE!! Cal, steven newman and FlGatorwood 2 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted March 27, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted March 27, 2020 Very little woodworking was done today....hauled two 1 x 10 x 4' planks to the shop. cut to length...jointed the edges Stanley No. 6c was having "issues" so the Stanley No. 8took over... Then some glue, clamps and cauls.. And one door panel is glued up...warts and all.... Had to add that little shim, between the panel and my bench....pipe clamp was hitting the shelf underneath the bench... Snuck out to Lowes, picked through a rack of 1 x 4s...found 3 six footers that were at least straight....will cut a couple down to size tomorrow, and get one door done, I hope.. Was making a Pine insert, to hang the panel saw up with....beltsander bit my finger! Was fine tuning the fit...snagged the end of the finger under the belt...ouch. Will try counter bored and plugged holes to assemble the doors....plus glue and screws....will have to plane a bevel on the edges of the doors, where they meet... Stay tuned... p_toad, Gunny, Harry Brink and 3 others 5 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted March 27, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted March 27, 2020 Pine insert.. . That I was working on. The red lines will be for 2 brass screws, to attach this thing to a door, so that saw will hang in the door...was sanding it for a better fit.. When a finger got snagged by the sanding belt going by...no blood...just a bruise... Door? Well, first I needed to remove a few clamps... So I could get a few measurements, and then cut a few parts of the mitersaw.. Once I hauled a couple 1 x 4 x 6' boards to the shop. Cut the long side pieces first. 36-1/16" long....needed to set up 3 drills ( to make it easier on me) 1 drill for the 3/8" Forstner bit ( had to hunt around to find it) for the counter bores, another with a drill bit, for the pilot holes, and a third to just drive a few screws....Then a bead of glue, and a clamp (or 3) Long sides were installed first, mainly so I could measure between them for the short boards...Move the clamp a few times, as more screws were driven in. When I flipped this over, had a bit of trouble holding things still...until the screws were done. Measured for the short board 17-3/4" strong...had an issue holding things for some of the screw driving going on.. I could support the near end...the far end was just hanging in the breeze...clamp back there is holding a LONG scrap going all the way across the bench. then the door and the scrap were clamped down to the bench...came time to install the last board.. Needed an assist from some clamps...corners attached first...2 HF clamps to hold the panel flat...lay this mess down.. And work on these. The #3 smoother plane was working done a few high spots....flip this mess over.. Stanley No. 8 was used to level the edges....some where a bit "prouder" than others...then decided to see how this door will look ( and get it OFF my bench ) Seems like it will fit. Door is sitting on the same thickness scrap as the case. one clamp seemed to do the job....NEED hinges. Until then...a place to hang up the shop apron...Quitting Time! Stay tuned....will be starting on Door #2 next.. p_toad, Fred W. Hargis Jr, FlGatorwood and 5 others 8 Quote

steven newman Posted March 28, 2020 Author Report Posted March 28, 2020 Right hand is now in a splint, possible tendon damage from last week's face-plant. Been banned from the shop for at least the weekend...always something.... Nothing was broken, according to the Xrays....affecting the the little and the ring fingers.....and all the way back to the wrist... HARO50, Gunny, Gerald and 6 others 9 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted March 29, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted March 29, 2020 Taking things slow, and easy....one board at a time After building a rack to hold a few extra chisels...and setting that aside til the glue cures Hauled one (yes, just one) 1 x 10 x 4' plank to the shop...edges looked straight, no need for a plane, this time...was a bit too long, though.. needed about this much cut off, and cut straight...too big for the mitre box ( hand is not ready for the handsaw workout), and too much to cut on the bandsaw. Tablesaw is buried under a bunch of...stuff. So...2 speedsquares were brought out...one to help set the other one up.. Speed square is set to the distance between the saw blade and the edge of the saw's base..little speed square to check for square across...6" SKIL to make a cut...just press against the guide. Clamp to keep things inplace on the bench...and.. Done...was checking the edges, to see which will get the glue.. Straightedge said the GJ was good enough for the Glue Joint...marked this for "Inside" as I wanted to "hide" that blown out knot... A 1 x 4 will be going right over it. what defect...ok, set this aside, take a break, while I haul the other 1 x 10 x 4' plank to the shop..... And repeat the steps...however. there was a slight problemski.. These two Hooligans were causing a twist and a curve...cut line was to the right....couldn't remove the knots... Ok...cut as much as I can..yet match the other plank. Arrange things so the bad areas would either be inside the door, or flattened out by the 1 x 4s being glued and screwed in place...with a clamp as needed...checked the edges together...bit of a spring joint...means the first clamp goes in the center.. With a "Hammer assist" then the ends with cauls...those two bad knots? Lower right hand corner. Screw will hold these two down and in place..the inside? has a big, old pitch pocket...hhmmm, might use a plywood backed rack to go over that pocket? Out of sight, out of mind. And THAT was quite enough for today...everything next will depend on the glue-ups.... Stay tuned...need to rest up the hand, again.. Gunny, Gerald, p_toad and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted March 31, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted March 31, 2020 Alrighty...hand is out of the wraps, still taking things easy on it....At least I can't do a "death grip" on any tools...might even make them work better. Clamps came off, supplies gathered.. a 1 x 4 x 6' was cut to two 36" stiles.. Then glue and a few clamps, and start on the first stile.. mark out a few spots to drill a few counter-bores...get out the Monkey-wards drill, again.. drill the counter bores, then a pilot hole, and then drive a 2" long screw...3 drills is easier than 3 bits into one drill... Then rotate and do the other stile.. . Then measure between the stiles..16-7/8" long 1 x 4s were then cut...corners first.. With a little help from some clamps...I wanted the door panel to be flat. then lay this down, and go across the ends... I needed some scrap across the bench..door is wider. All done? not quite, beltsander and the #3 plane to clean and square up the ends...then One stile got planed flat..the other stile took a different route.. I needed a bevel, for the two doors to close, will have to go back and bevel Door#1 as well...so, how do you bevel a 3' long edge? Start out near the edge, and keep working towards the front of the door..Stanley No. 7c,Type 9.. Then, get a clamp ready, find a scrap of 1x4 pine long enough..and test fit the new door.. You can just see the scrap under the door. need to go shopping for a few hinges, and get these two doors hung. Found the handles for the doors. Stay tuned...need to hang the doors ( always "fun"..not) and start hanging tools inside,,,,and decide what sort of latch I need. FlGatorwood, p_toad, Larry Buskirk and 4 others 7 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted April 1, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted April 1, 2020 Hinges have arrived! Just had to get OUT of the house for a bit...went to Lowes and bought the hinges. Now..the fitting, and cussing can begin... Larry Buskirk, HARO50, Cal and 2 others 2 3 Quote
steven newman Posted April 1, 2020 Author Report Posted April 1, 2020 To install them hinges...had a tool kit.. Hinges came with tiny brass screws, meh. Added 1" long screws every couple of holes. One drill has a VIX bit, the other a driver. Needed a landing spot, to sit the doors on, while I attach the door and hinge to the case.. Left door...a 1x was screwed to the table top, and the clamp as needed..the right hand door? There is nothing under the case. A screw to hold the pad up to the case, and a clamp to keep it there. Installed the right door first.. Had to move 2 planes, for the door to swing open enough to install the screws... Except, I used 2" long screws, to withstand the weight of the door swinging around. The left door needed planed, to start a bevel.. That end is right up against the Crochet...so, a clamp was added, door is sitting on the shelf under the bench...but.. Needed that little extra. Bevel was started with the old Number 7 Swung the lateral lever all the way over, to tip the iron to the left. Made a lot of full length shavings...still needed the beltsander to fine tune the fit to the other door.. Now, both doors are hung...a little tight at the top. Will do, for now. That chisel rack? It was also installed.. Along with a strip of Pine for the blades to rest against. That keeper above the rack? Helps hold a 20" D8 Panel saw, 10ppi. There is some fresh DNA on the lower keeper...drill bit tried to drill my thumb. Hook & Eye latch, for now, until I find one I like. Was a very busy day Next? fill the doors, plug all them counter-bores...then see about a little finish....maybe? Stay tuned.. FlGatorwood, HARO50, Cal and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post Gunny Posted April 2, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted April 2, 2020 Looks good so far. As for the latch what about some magnets? I have some here that are used to hold a diaper on a forklift. They hold rather well. If I put them together nothing short of pliers or a vise gets them apart. I used one here to keep this door closed with all the brushes on it. One and a washer for it to grab keeps it closed quite well. Bigger door, use more. Popular Post steven newman Posted April 2, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted April 2, 2020 Long time ago, I made a copy of a Stanley No. 888 Tool chest... And used a closure/clasp to hold the lids shut... Thinking about buying another such item....maybe 2? we'll see Today...decided to move a few things around...Had some egg beater drills hanging above the bandsaw, getting filthy.. So, I took this mess down, remade the hanger, added two shelf brackets.. Then decided to empty the hammer til, as well.. Hmm, room for one more? While this door was standing opened, I seemed to have picked up a pair of Hitch-hikers... As for the Left door,...moved the coping saws to the door, along with the backsaw... Then added a couple "keepers".. May need to find a few more of those. Red Shelf is getting full... See anything you like? Got the Veritas Plug cutter set up ( the ONLY Veritas toy I own, BTW) Cuts a 3/8' tapered plug. i made 2 dozen... And installed 21 of these things. Small screwdriver to pop each plug loose, add a small bead of glue to the tapered (small) end. Tap into the hole with a light hammer, mindful of the grain directions...and.. had enough for ONE door. Will need another 22 plugs made..tomorrow. Then I can come back, use a chisel to pop off the excess plug, maybe a few swipes with a block plane. maybe in a few days of this...might conduct another $0.05 tour? Stay tuned.
