Popular Post steven newman
Ok, might as well get started....this all came about because of a royal mess ( aka cluster-....) of tools piled up, and getting dusty and rusty.. yeah... So..have been going through all the tools, deciding which to keep handy, and which to stash....(cleaned up down in the Tool threads.) Picked up a few pine boards the other day... Ten 1 x 10 x 4' planks....not the best looking ones on the pallet...but, will do for a tool cabinet build... A few 1 x 4s as well. Handsome, ain't they....$45.75 counting tax.... So, today..the pick of the litter..4 planks of 1 x 10 were hauled to the shop....goal WAS to build a cabinet 3' wide, by 4' tall...WAS...until I stood one of the up, where the cabinet will go... Sitting on a 3' tall toolbench....another 4' would have been a bit too tall....design change! so that instead of 4' tall, it will be 3' tall...yet still 3' wide..needed to trim the worst ends of the 4 planks...one even split after the saw made the cut.. Not up for that much Cardio, today....besides.this is a Vintage SKIL saw... Should be enough to do this job... Once they were all trimmed down to 36", time for the jointer. . Except this Jointer was New in the box about 1905 Stanley No. 7c, type 9 needed the edges jointed for a BIG glue up....first was the start of the mess..and the cussing.. Have 4 planks to glue up, and I didn't want 2 to fly apart while adding the next one..problem was finding long enough cauls....and clamps.... Came out to 36 x 37"....glue lines will be vertical, once the glue is cured....looks like I am done, for the day. Need to decide how deep to make the box itself....a 1 x 10 may not quite do it....may glue those 1x4s to the four 1 x 10s for the box......then decide how to join the corners, and the back to the box.....making me head hurt, Imagine trying to cut the ends square on this "little" panel... Stay tuned...this might take a day..or three lew, Larry Buskirk, Cal and 6 others
Popular Post Larry Buskirk
Have to love the quality of those Maynards boards! Pick through the pile, find straightest boards, load into car, ten minutes later unload same boards that now look like they've been formed to make a boat! ...DAMHIKT... lew, Artie, Cal and 5 others

steven newman
2 pine boards....1 x 4" x 4' have a slight problem.. They are laying on top of each other.....and the top board is even worse... Compound curves? May just take these two back to Menard's....either a refund, or two replacements....IF they have any good ones in stock... Heading to the shop in a bit....clamps are due to come off....I might want to stand there and catch them... Larry Buskirk
@steven newman, I've got 8' 2 x 4's there that by the time I got back home were twisted 180° from one end to the other. They were the straightest ones I found in the pile when I sorted through them. Cal, Artie, HARO50 and 1 other 1

Popular Post steven newman
Humans too.... Out of the clamps...nothing flew apart... This is what you'll see, when you open the doors....besides all the toys....er..TOOLS.. layout mark...one one each end...so I can trim a few boards to length...then use the No. 7c and the #15.. To joint the edges enough for a dry fit.. Then glue, cauls and clamps, again... Set this thing aside, repeat until.. A panel for the bottom of the cabinet appears in the clamps...Set both of these aside... While I bring down more planks from upstairs....and cut them for length...1 of the 1 x 10s was cut twice...had a split for both ends, and a huge knot. Clamped the two 1 x 10s together, beltsanded the ends til they matched....one of the 1 x 4s wanted to twist... So, it got clamped to one that didn't want to twist....just waiting on clamps, and space to use them.....then..maybe a little assembly? Have a LOT of counter sunk pilot holes to drill.... Stay tuned..the "FUN" is about to begin...along with the cussing I'm pooped right now...nap time! Popular Post steven newman
Lots of cussing going on, in the shop this evening.. but.. 2 planks out of the clamps... Decided to just go ahead and assembly this thing...needed a foot added to the back panel... So the back panel won't fall over....had to turn things around...as I needed to work from the "outside" of the case.. This is the bottom panel getting installed...gotta start somewhere...A little glue, and a clamp...predrill a few holes, add 2" long screws...remove clamp...flip this thing over, onto the bottom...and install the top.....then over onto it's side...Needed 3 hands, only had 2.. And install a side panel....in two steps.... narrow strip first, this time...glued and screwed to the back and the ends...bead of glue, move the clamps. And the sides are now installed....need to get this up off my floor...first I need to clear a mess out of the way... I need this spot cleaned off....add two foot pads.. Screw these two items down....this way, cabinet sits up off the tabletop so the doors will swing open...then the real fun began.... And a few 3" screws to make sure it stay put...Had to move the drill press a few inches to the left... hang the chain for the chuck key..and hang the powerstrip...DP handles were right up against the side of the cabinet....now there is a bit of clearance... Might spend tomorrow making hangers for this mess... Then work on the doors....I saved up all the scraps, and cutoffs....to make the hangers with... I am plumb worn out....try again tomorrow.... I brought this up for others to see why we sometimes do, or do not put a finish on something inside or out. As you said let it age normally and it will take on a patina all of it's own. Much like unfinished drawers do in furniture. Personal preference, not a right or wrong way to go about it. As for lights, maybe some LED strip lights. They work of a 12 volt transformer, no heat at the lights themselves and wiring is small and easy to do. Probably easier to do in my shop as I have several 12 volt power supplies for equipment lights and some under cabinet lights. But using a wall wart for as little as you would turn it on would work well. Or you could go low tech and use a HF approach. steven newman, Cal, FlGatorwood and 1 other 3

Neighbors son made a cabinet from 3/4 MDF and edge banded it with oak. Sure I taught him how to edge band but I don't recall saying MDF was any substitute for plywood. Bench top, sure then some Formica, but the whole cabinet? OMG was this thing heavy. HARO50, Cal, Larry Buskirk and 3 others 1
