September 16, 20196 yr Popular Post Master King has been busy..... Picked an old plane on Saturday....at 1/2 price, of course.. Because the lever cap was broken.. Paid me $5 and left....Sunday afternoon, spent 2 hours in the shop..... Had a spare lever cap, too...... And..had it making some shaving from an Ash board.. Stanley No. 3, Type 11....about 1905, or so...not too bad of a weekend?
September 16, 20196 yr Popular Post Been awhile for me online. Keeping myself busy trying to get more stuff done in the shop. The up-side is that I have gotten a lot of stuff cleaned up, tuned up and starting to get things ready for a few projects. The down-side is that the shop/garage is 90 degrees with a lot of humidity. The heat doesn't bother me so much, but the the humidity is like trying to breath under water as I am a life long asthmatic. So I take things a bit slower. My wife Tami has been volunteering a few days per week at our church's pregnancy center. She finally got all the jumping through the hoops of the the local school district and got the go ahead to start substituting a couple days per week and getting paid for it. After all I do need to have her keep up with my trips to Home Depot and making some things for her. It is hard to believe that Tami and I have been here in Bowling Green, KY since October 9th 2018. Time sure does fly. I am looking forward to "Fall" so the humidity will be less hateful to my lungs.
September 17, 20196 yr Popular Post Got my Digital Duplicator for my CNC in and started it on the test piece to see how it goes. First it goes slow! I'll update you all when it finishes, I hope before the week is out.
September 17, 20196 yr Took tonight to put away supplies from last two projects. And empty my tool cart, put everything away and called it a night. Back to work tomorrow.
September 17, 20196 yr A Bradford had a split tree trunk. A gust or two of wind blew off one and I was able to get it for free. It's been drying for about 18 months. Today, got it cut into 2" X 2" on the bandsaw. A new thread coming in a few days. Now that the wood is cut to workable pieces, I don't have to remove it from underneath the Shopsmith to move it out. September 17, 20196 yr Popular Post We did a show Saturday in the booming Metropolis of Gas City, Indiana. A family there owns a place called Mama Pearson’s Soaporeum and they specialize is hand made soaps, bath balms and oils. Every fall they do a Fall Fest and invite local artisans to set up. Booth rent is free and it is limited to 50 vendors of Mama Pearson’s choosing and we are fortunate to be one. It was a great show for us and I walked away with 4 orders so that’s what my week entails. I did have a first, though. I’m build a cremations urn for a lady’s dog. FYI, the two lovely ladies are my wife and my youngest granddaughter.

What a relief! A note about Bradford Pear is that turning it green will give you better color ,actually very similar to cherry, and letting it dry will give more of a gray color. Also watch for that curl. I have had some great results with curl in BP. Have had a busy weekend getting ready for the Church Widows Banquet and they had a great time last night. Had a experience Saturday sanding a plank 2 x 16 x 13 ft. Took me a while to figure out why getting snipe in the middle of this thing and I notice he is lifting the board in the middle . I just do not have a good flat place to do that long and heavy lumber. The board was cypress.
September 18, 20196 yr I turned one today. At some time, it had a limb that grew off it and it had been cut. The tree healed over. When I cut it to a 2" X 2" , it had a spot that looked like clay. I assumed that it would turn off. Oh, how wrong I was. The deeper I went, the piece of wood revealed some bark from a very long time ago and the spindle almost came into 2 pieces. It is very pretty wood, but it has a lot of snipe. I roughed it in with a roughing gouge, then uses a parting tool to get some rings down to near the size. Then I used the skew to get it down to size until it was smooth and near size. When I stopped it, it had many mini-pits all over. I guess I need to sharpen my skew and practice on something else. And, yes, it has the appearance of cherry. Very pretty.
