John, is that a Veritas plane you've used there?

Steve, I am so sorry for missing this question so long ago! Short answer is no, it's a Lie Nielsen Shooting Plane that I picked up last Spring. And I love it. I have not tried the LV Shooting plane.

This is going to be another great thread. You and Jeroid are building much more than a desk.

Thanks all for your encouragement and kudos, our son is actually getting interested more and more as he learns new processes, which is a great thing because I wasn't so sure if he was enjoying this, or if he was just doing it cuz ol dad was asking him too. But I have seen signs that he actually really enjoys some of it, yesterday he was having a great time, he was problem solving the fit of a tenon into a mortise, it just wasn't sitting right, at first it appeared it was bottoming out and the shoulder wasn't sitting flush on the surface, so he chopped out a little deeper and the shoulder still wasn't sitting on the surface, then he closely examined the tenon at the shoulder and noticed a little tiny bump in the wood right next to the tenon base at the shoulder that was preventing the proper seating of the joint, he was excited he found the issue, and pared the bump down as you see photo above working on the tenon, and he did that trouble shooting all by himself, I could see accomplishment and pride in his eyes.

No problem! It was only a small question. I've seen a Veritas shooting plane setup a couple of months ago and thought it was pretty slick. Mostly I'm interested in how useful this design is. Do you use it often, and if so what do you use it mostly for?

Small parts, end grain....?

All part of my learning journey ;)

Well the son and I got some good work in today on his desk.

Drawer parts cut and laid out. We glued it up too.

End of the day, we got the top built, cherry with walnut edges, and the drawer is in, with a walnut front. It's all pretty rough right now, has to be fine tuned and tomorrow is my boys birthday, l'll work on it solo while he enjoys the day with a buddy of his. Hopefully I can get it done and ready for finish. He wants Tri-Tip for his birthday dinner, l'll be busy grilling after the desk!

I've been quietly following the progress on the desk John. Looking like it nearing the finish. Looks great and really glad your son is developing an interest in woodworking .

Thanks Al! Well, you most certainly can't say we rush anything around here, that's for sure!

Laid out plans for another addition to our living room.  A table for between two lazy boy chairs.  Needs to be at an angle.  Creating some interesting challenges to think through.   @steven newman is about to get cracking on his box for holding taps and dies.  Hard to keep up with him.  :D

That reminded me that your daughter is already in, if I remember correctly.  How is she doing?

Tom, she loves it, thanks for asking. Still stationed at DLI in Monterey CA, it's a school of language, she's learning Russian and how to be Russian, we are very proud her, if all goes well she graduates early next year, then on to AIT in Texas to learn how to use the spy gear and radios, then on to her duty station.

Being stationed in at Monterey, sheesh, what a gig!

You realize she will come home on leave from that first duty station will all kinds of stories that she can't share with you.  We are all proud of her and wish her the best.

Ya it's a bummer Tom, in that respect, we were also told we may not even know where she is for any given amount of time, she can go dark for periods of time, no phone calls or nothing. But hey, what we do for our awesome nation right! We are very proud of her indeed. And I will most certainly pass your pride on to her, she'll smile, this community is a part of their lives as much as it is mine, they don't come on here, but they know who you all are, I talk. :)

You know, we gave our daughter to the Army, and all mama and I got for it was two ARMY T-shirts, I would have felt better about it if they threw in a couple coffee mugs!

I love the design of the desk and the material. Killer job so far !! Not many 10th graders using hand planes these days,..or any tools for that matter. How lucky is he to have that kinda shop to hang out in,..and if he's asking to do it sounds like your lucky too :Praise:

Yeah, the learning the Russian is not too bad.  The slang changes based on location within a very large country much like ours does here.  How to be and act Russian.  That is tough to mimic.  I am better at this when I am in country mixing with my wife's family and friends.

Quite a challenge she has undertaken.  Wish her the best of luck.

Of course sometimes I just go with what I know.  Stand out and be proud.

Well, John. Considering what she's doing and about to do. And the vetting necessary for her to even be considered. You likely need not tell her what goes on here. If she doesn't know, somebody in her C of C does. ;)

The dialects she says are hard Gunny, they are listening all day long to transmissions from Russian soldiers that were dropped in on over the years, everything was recorded by us, and our students today are learning how to hear, what to hear, and the differing dialects from those recorded spy drops, it's pretty fascinating. The learning to be Russian, well, that will probably never happen unless she stays in the Army for a lifetime and focuses the discipline and embedding herself in the culture. At this point, who knows if it's going to be a career or not.

Since there are so many Russian/Americans who already know how to be Russian, it's highly unlikely our daughters skills will be used for anything other than spying on communications, and translating, and deciphering literature radio transmissions in a field environment.

But hey, she sure sounds Russian to me at this point! You'd be proud of her Gunny!
