  • Busy couple of days. Managed to get the walls all painted, the floor painted, and finally got the only shelf framed out.  The top still needs more coats of paint this dry fit looked good this evening.

  • Finally finished before dark and can get some updates done.   Ran the power wire as I built the deck so power is already available and run from one side to the other.  At the moment I just n

Now for the doors.

Yeah, I was off work this week and took advantage of the daylight to get the deck finished.  The doors I can make in the shop, or the carport when I get them assembled.  Have been studying a few different methods of making them.  Typically I make a frame and skin it on both sides with 1/4 plywood.  Having seen @steven newman last few PIP's I am thinking doing something with lap joints or making true rails and stiles with 1/2 plywood inserts for panels.  I had wanted small windows at first but this gets sun all day so my chairs would take a lot of UV.  Part of the idea of storing them in the closet to begin with was to protect from that.  Any design would do, basic doors 101.

Last item on the agenda is to make a light pole with three 20 watt LED floodlights.  One will be on dusk to dawn sensor, the other two for task lighting.  All the electrical has been run for it already.  Just have to make the mounting plates on the outside wall, and make the pole itself.  Will be using some 2 inch steel square pipe I have set aside.  Some welding for brackets and paint after that.

Well I speeded up production by making this rack to hang the stiles on so all 4 sides get a coat of paint at one time.  Now we wait for 2nd coat to dry.

Then back to shop to drill all the holes with my jig.

These 16 were hanging in shop all night and ready to install.  Rain stopped to I got out in the nice sauna and put them up.  Staring to look like the old deck again.  Finally the piled up pieces from previous deck has all been used.  Had 4 extra stiles left, the rest were warped or broken.  I am starting to see the finish line on this project.

I have the strange idea of putting a top plate of 1" X 3" just so you don't get something caught in the stiles.  Just thinking aloud here.  :)

I am with you on that.  Previous deck rail had a 5/4 x6 board on top.  Going to do the same thing again here.  Have to get them this weekend and start prepping them for install.  Have yet to decide on paint color.  We had white last time, was a pain to keep looking clean.  I can use the deck grey color, or take the blue from the door to the building and use that.  Both would be a lot better than white.  I know some use a 2x4 but I like to set my cup down and know it will stay and not fall off easily.  Plus it covers any imperfection in the lines of the rails.  A nice cheat...:D

And, the cap offers some protection for the ends of the balusters.

A question, what is the black area around the lower rail at each up right?

To attached the lower rails I used some metal end caps that came black.  I used a 3 inch #10 SS screw to attach the plate to the 2x4 then a 1 5/8 #10 SS screw to attached the plate to the 4x4.  The upper 2x4's I mortised in for strength.  Lower ones code allows this so I used them.

Tomorrow a top rail, still have yet to decide which color.  Grey from the deck or blue from the door.

I'll work on the doors next week...….

My vote will be grey which won't show the dirt as well.  But, then you can get a power washer for about $100 right now.  An electric one that does not have that much power, you can wash the house, car and all this.  I have one which will eat wood if you get too close or take the paint off the car.

This is the one that will do what I need and is affordable.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Greenworks-1600-PSI-1-2-GPM-Cold-Water-Electric-Pressure-Washer/1000866740  As they prepare for Christmas in the next month, the prices will come down so they don't have to warehouse it.

I have a Ryobi one, got it for our special price of Free from the neighbor after I fixed his fuel pump few years back.

My wife thought the same thing.  I painted a short board of each color this evening and let her take a look.

She tells me the Libra in her won't let her decide.:JawDrop:

That looks great.  The color matches the deck floor.

One suggestion, draw a semicircle on the ends and use a belt sander or sabre saw to remove those corners.  The overhang is perfect.  You did a great job on this project.  Looks very professional.

Good idea, and I thought about that while having a beer and enjoying my handiwork.  Minor detail, but you are right much better to round them than bump into a 900 corner.  Have to get on it and then touch it up when I check the rest.  If weather holds might get done tomorrow.

@steven newman  I saw yours were very close to the post and played with a mock up to see what I liked best.  You cannot see in the pictures but I did bevel the ends to prevent cutting myself, because hey I would be the one guy that does. :D

Going to give this rounded corners a try, if I change my mind I have room to cut them shorter and try something else, well at least once I can do that.:JawDrop:
