Cold and windy today, a great day to be at the lathe. Unfortunately computer repair calls kept that from happening!

Our Patriot Turners-

@DAB and @Woodbutcherbynight added some really nice additions to last week's "Wednesday's..."

DAB posted a sweet cherry bowl-

And Woodbutcherbynight is preparing a nice looking hand wheel for a project-

@Steve Krumanaker is preparing for a demonstration he will be giving to the woodturning club to which he belongs. One of the turning items he will show is a "Knitting Nancy".

For The Newbies-

We recently posted a video about keeping the lathe Morse Tapers clean. Mike Peace added another video with more information concerning various accessories that can be used in conjunction with the Morse tapers

Expand Your Horizons-

I know that @Steve Krumanaker turns some bird houses and even creates tiny birds to occupy them. Recently Mr. David Reed Smith made available a tutorial for making his version-

I finished up a late Christmas present. It was the bowl I had been using as a test for the Wonder Weave sanding screens.

It is finished with beeswax and mineral oil combination.

I found that I need to make/buy better sanding devices for the inside of bowls. I have a 3" pad-

but it doesn't do well on the inside of the bowls at the bottom corners. I've made some sanding balls (from Mr. David Reed Smith's tutorials) that use sandpaper but was thinking of something that I could test the Wonder Weave products. Need to think on it.

Safe turning

Nice job again Lew and beautiful bowl!!

Steve

That is one nice test bowl. Good post

Haven't done much in a couple weeks.  Thanks for the post to keep my interest up.

Great looking bowl Lew, love the colors.

Beautiful bowl Lew...   love the flame box elder!  ;o)

@Steve Krumanaker Thank You! I've been trying to use you advice about continuous curved sides.

@Gerald Thanks! I'm really liking the Wonder Weave sanding products.

@HandyDan Thank You!

@DuckSoup Thanks! I don't know if the color will fade over time.

@Jim from Easy Wood Tools Thank You! Hope you get the chance to turn some of the flame box elder sometime!

Lew,

Have you considered or experimented with the contraption that Eddie Castelin has us to make.  I have yet to do it, but you can purchase the hardware from his website.  Since I don't do bowls, I don't see the need for me to personally have one.  but, I am curious as to how it works.

Perhaps, I totally misunderstand, but this is what popped into my mind when I read your statement.

I can't find what I typed.  Anyway, when I read that you need to replace your tool, this is what I thought you were talking about.  I'll find the kit on another site and paste it in a separate post.

For the hardware to this tool, just scroll down to Sander Bearing.  There you can order the hardware and you can make your own handle to fit your like.

@FlGatorwood I have made one of those and bought the bearing and sleeve from Capt Eddie. Sometimes these are referred to as inertia sanders.

I have a 3" pad from Woodcraft  I use with the handle and it works absolutely great on the outside of a bowl. I just made a new 2" pad for the inside of a bowl so it gets into the transition from side to bottom. It doesn't work as well as I had hoped. I guess I'll have to go back to my shop made sanding ball for that area. The sanding ball is used with an electric drill.

The inertia sander is really easy to use once you get the hang of the correct angle to present it to the spinning turning.

Ouch.  It does not have a power cord but who could afford one at this price.  :PullingHair:

And, since I don't do bowls (as I don't have a bowl gouge of any kind or size) I wonder if this is durable enough to purchase.

But, I think this is what you are talking about.  I don't know much about this, but I have learned much.  Thanks for posting this, Lew.  You made me research.

@FlGatorwood Expense is one of the reasons I try to make my own sanding tools. The price of the tool plus the unique sandpaper pieces can really add up.

I am not that talented or experienced.  But, I'll gladly watch your progress.  :D

+1, I have all I can handle with a pen or odd sized dowel or something that should look like a dowel, maybe a ashtray on a rare occasion.
