It is a great carving tool and with a little experience will give a nice smooth finish. Looking forward to seeing where your future work will take you.

We will help you spend your money! Like Stick, said, lot's of talent and experience here. BTDT abounds, so, when someone give a recommendation on a tool it's because that is the best one for the price/use.

Please listen to Gramps. If you do a search on here, you will find several threads addressing how to and highlighted all of the dangers. It is really nice as an experiment, but way too dangerous to do.

Many folks don't like these and they have their reasons.  It's not as good in some ways at the stand alone machines, but think of it as an over grown Dremel.  It is an excellent starter machine.  Of course, I have never outgrown mine.  Good luck.

 

Oh, just remembered that a Navy base used to be in Millington, TN back in the 1960's. I was lucky enough to be stationed there for 3 months in 1968.  The flight line was across the highway from the living quarters.  I was fortunate to return to one of the old barracks in the 1980's for a 2 week class.  I wonder how many veterans are from there.

I know my fellow veterans well, and we all tend to get each other in trouble from time to time. Unfortunately, even $500 is beyond my means at the moment. I'll probably pick up a hand held jig saw after Christmas. 

 

Millington NAS is still there and flight line is still across Navy Road. I get up there from time to time (px and commissary)

Gene, I have been lucky to have two of these.  One was given to me and the other I bought from a gentleman who learned he had cancer.  I felt really sorry for him and bought a few other items.  As I said, I have yet to outgrow mine.  I'll show what I just finished this past week.  This is dogwood from a neighbor who moved to North Alabama this week.  It was in their front yard and the black holes that you see on top are where the borers ate and killed the tree.  I love using the band saw and the drill press for sanding.  Just like an over grown Dremel.  I wish I could get this machine and package for someone.  I bet if you flashed cash, they would probably accept $400.  

 

Note:  One piece of cedar and one piece of pecan to make up the amount of wood needed to make 6 X 6.  All other is dog wood.

Good looking box, Steve. I'll bet the thickness almost maxxed out that Shopsmith band saw. Sometimes I wish I had a bigger one. But, I've gotten by for 35 years with mine. Bought a shorty a couple years back. It's really handy since the full sized one has a Jointech system on it and it's a bear to re configure. Also, the Shorty can be used as an out feed table when ripping on the big one.

As always Gator, excellent work. Great contrasts of your wood too. I've never been able to grow a dogwood long enough here for material of any size. Most die after about 5 years. May be the soil &/or the extended periods of below zero temps...IDK.
