Yea, I looked up more on it. Until someone comes up with an actual machine whose purpose is safe fractal burning, I think Ill stay with regular wood burning... and the occasional bonfire.

You'd be hard pressed to do that to my unit (ALL medical personnel for a 286 bed combat support hospital. This dude would have done that though. He was our mental health tech (and EMT). Former Marine tanker. Dude made bat**** look sane! Brought a blow up doll with a DILLIGAF t-shirt downrange "for morale"

 

Someone out there also has a picture of him standing on a berm wearing nothing but his kevlar, battle rattle, his boots, and a thong! "For morale" 

Wore this to the DFAC one morning.  Told the Sgt at the check in desk it was a new Army Field Uniform under testing.  He looked at me for a minute and shook his head no way.  Told him it's a "Kinder, gentler Army."

 

It took less than an hour for the news to get to Base CO.

 

Yeah, I got a visit to my office.  He was dying laughing.  Loved it, even took a picture and sent to his wife and told her same thing.

I would bet you saw some Purple Heart before and didn't even know it.  Purple Heart is used by the our military for equipment trailer decking.  You probably saw plenty of it but it had turned brown from the sun beating down on it.

I have done it and I will not promote it to anyone especially you. It is a dangerous hobby and not at all creative, Your work is spectacular and factual wood burning is just holding 2 probes apart and turning on the juice. It has a mind of its own and is unpredictable. I tried many ways to control the burn, but it will just take off in another direction. It stinks up the place terribly and takes days to air out. There are at least 4 documented deaths and somemore that have been reported. these are not first timers either. The safest way I have heard of is to place the probes clamped to holders and walk across the room and flip a switch,then watch from a distance. But that is no fun and not very creative either.

It is not inexpensive either, the commercial unit I had cost over $400. and the proper gloves cost around $250.,and are supposed to be checked after every use, which costs $85. plus wait time from the lab. I did not use the proper glove,(only rated 600V, need 12,000 V. linemans glove). Hardly any of the guys on YouTube are using the correct gloves. Stay away from homemade units from microwave ovens. They are made up with under rated and tested wires and connections. This kind of voltage can jump too, just too many chances of something unknown happening.

Your work is very creative and beautiful, and that has to be fulfilling. Anytime someone makes things they like, it is fun and exciting. I know because I have done that.  But to me it is no fun doing something that I have no control over, and have to watch constantly to keep from harming myself.

Thanks Herb. I was hoping you would weigh in on this particular topic. Appreciate your candor, expertise and willingness to share your experience.

I said before I have no intention of doing it without a LOT of research and the proper equipment (not some hack job from another source). IF I ever decided to do it, I would fill it with tinted epoxy resin to make it my own. But I don't see it happening. Probably ever.

Being an electrician, whenever I do fractal burning, it’s by accident. (You should see some of my old pliers, LOLOL). Also it kinda passes as welding too.

My next work... not a lot of burning on this one (major outline and just enough stars to line them up once the paint dries. Then dremel carving the stars. 

This is why I was swearing about mathing. I had the dimensions of the union, but had to math the ratios to get the rest of the flag. I was not impressed lol

Well, first thing...you'll have to run it by the Approval Board here for unanimous approval...I don't see that happening either.

Buy a scroll saw instead. Will fit nicely in your "she-shop", does not require lightning bolts to operate and would complement your current carving and wood-burning nicely.
