Frame & Panel Project

Ok...after a rest, went back to the shop....

Panel needed a jack plane to flatten it on both faces.    Picked the best looking face, and made that into a raised panel....

Three long parts...needed jointed straight. and face planed level, until they all matched each other.   Set up a jig, and ran the Stanley 45  around, milling grooves for the panel to sit in.   ( about ankle deep in shavings, at this point..) Then milled stubby tenons on the two short rails.   Glue and clamps came next..

Lid will sit flush with the back of the box.   Will have a bit of overhang along the other three sides.

Will let this sit awhile, until I am allowed back into the shop....

Stay tuned..

Got back home today....SORE!

Shop will be closed for almost two weeks.   Anything over 10 pounds is Verboten for me to lift...Waiting on the hole in the vein in the groin to heal up.   More pills to take...getting a Halter Heart Monitor through the mail....wear that for a month.   Was NOT a fun day, yesterday......finally was able to sleep at 0600 this morning....apart from just being "knocked out"....

Before I left the house yesterday morning ( 0700..or so) I brought that box, the lid and the hardware and toys...up to the Dinning Room Table....figure I can at least do the hinges..

Front view....lid is just sitting there...

197770772_lidview.jpg.9af27b0d6d31c78ec87f571c62b88454.jpg

And an idea of the hinges that will get used...

hinge.jpg.6fce6224c53b8a7b0e9b9214547f0ffb.jpg

Dinky thing, ain't.....wait until you see the screws...still need to coat the lid with Shellac...  When things are done....maybe a coat or two of Gloss Poly...

That's going to be an awesome look when the finish hits that grain!

Great to hear you're home & doing OK. HEED the warnings! Need your presence at the TPW Midwest Summer Fest in 2 weeks so lay low until then.

Besides, the Dungeon Shop called and said IT was looking forward to a summer break too. :D

Take it easy, keep cool and just hang out here for a while. Pulling for you!

Oh yeah, the box is fantastic!:)

Edited by Grandpadave52

You're probably OK lifting those hinges and screws, but the screwdriver may be a bit of a stretch! :D Look after your health first and foremost, the box will wait. Nice one, by the way!

John

No need to run back to the shop. That box won't go anywhere. Glad you're back home. Take the 2 weeks to relax and heal.

Yeah, did that almost 6 years ago for the first stent.  Last two visits they went in through the right wrist - much easier for them AND for me.   Just take it easy like they said; wear your monitor; get better.  ;)

Found two electrodes stickers, still stuck to my leg..today....They missed a couple.    Had the Grandson act as a Runner today.    He went to the shop, to get a few supplies for the box.

Hinges were installed onto the lid, first.   Then, more holes were drilled..

163354642_YankeeDrill.jpg.e6f4bc0906dd8931ec485933a418999c.jpg

With the smallest bit it had in the handle....out of 6.   Screws were tiny...

243072692_littlescrews.jpg.2a041179ebc0ed7a3feef0e84cd379ba.jpg

And so was the screwdriver.   Lid was installed..

hinged.jpg.6df988b99a87f282d81194066b4445ce.jpg

Fancy grain on the back of the box, too.   Screws came in a package of 60..

screws.jpg.68d69388a02fd9cbe37feefd84a107a7.jpg

Should last  a while?  Thinking about having a handle to lift the box and carry it with...centered in the end's raised panels..

371552893_endpanel.jpg.657d8656c1d24c3cb11763ed902230f4.jpg

So...some of the supplies brought up today was a selection of handles....thinking maybe this will do for the ends..

901931226_option1.jpg.d9a34b5180a6f5af2625d704f475af08.jpg

Something like this?   If I turn it the other way..

1505228676_option2.jpg.e6f494dab37537b46e6ed4144f827b7c.jpg

Just doesn't look quite right.   Lid could use a handle to open it with..

809955265_lidhandles.jpg.a72d2367d2bc876b70b308d2ec39e250.jpg

Whether to go here on top at the front edge, or....right on the front edge?   Large one, or small one?

Can of Amber Shellac and a brush was also brought up from the shop, along with a can of Poly Gloss....and a tool tray..

Since it has the screws for the handles..1943633111_ToolTray1.jpg.d10877a9c0673516ba551b1ad3907dc4.jpg

And a couple fancy screwdrivers.  Should be able to do a little bit to keep me going...can't sit around all day long....butt goes numb.

Stay tuned...

Maybe they are there in case you need a jump start:lol:

Glad you had help. You need to follow the doctor's instructions!

Glad you are home and doing ok Steve.

Beautiful little box you have going there.  What will you use it for?

If it were mine, I might put the handles shown on the ends like you are considering.  I don't know about the one on top, it does have an overhang...

Sooo, how about a teaser..

Lid has a handle..

A look at the lid..opened...

445130429_openedlid.jpg.9170a9af8d975831114696918aeca234.jpg

And the other end..

1031200157_endview2.jpg.6b97da2a03762667fdf6e19bc8742fd6.jpg

And close the lid...

1644098106_closedcase.jpg.9bc869cdba581bc3b566ca23cb3def50.jpg

Needs buffed out, before the gloss poly goes on.  Not sure about the inside, yet.   Not much I can do about that, either.

Just a little Project, to clear the brain, after that Painted Project.

Will see how tomorrow goes...stay tuned...

Turned out great Steven. As always, enjoyed following PIP of this project.

Glad you're feeling and doing better today, BUT, don't let that be a false sense of security. Let things heal properly. Don't make me stop this computer and come over there!:P

Have no idea IF I added any tags to this show....

Extent of the woodworking today....rub some fine sandpaper around, knocking down dust bunnies and roughians,...

track down a "Free" brush..

brush.jpg.318fbb50a9a53f7d9cfa062534b3ac16.jpg

When I bought that huge plastic tub of tools ata garage sale ( $5)...this was one of the items in it....

Decided I needed a way to hold the lid open, instead of my fingers getting varnish on them..

chained.jpg.41287d8bffaf07b4fd64078045ed3f20.jpg

Cut a length of chain, dug up two of the smallest "Cup Hooks" I could find....once a few pilot holes were drilled...hooks installed, chain recut to final length..

crimped.jpg.e64214c80350c1aa03cfafd16fe4542f.jpg

Used another pair of pliers to crimp the hooks closed...

1981829375_bottomhook.jpg.a5bf1f28e7d362a769c8cc13985642e5.jpg

Pilot drill on the bottom of the box.   Bottom hook was a bit rough to crimp, kept trying to slam the lid on my hand.

When the Box is finally finished, and Craig clears off the top of his dresser...

dresser.jpg.aca236214c25852081143f4b5c6ac996.jpg

He can store a bunch of this stuff in the box.    Grain seems to match, too.

Maybe Sunday, I can do the varnish routine?   Hopefully just one coat....we'll see

Stay tuned...
