July 31, 20187 yr Popular Post Something a bit different....as a way to use up a pile of scraps? One such pile. Have already sliced a couple of these scraps. I don't think the old 1/2" bandsaw blade will be of much use... Been a bit too beat up, lately.....I do have a 1/4" blade in the saw, right now.. Not really a new one, but it is at least...sharp. Maple tends to turn a bit brown. Cuts were a tad wavy. Motor at first didn't want to work this hard....and tried to shut down....until I pointed out to it, that the motor it replaced, was STILL in the shop...and YOU CAN BE REPLACED......motor started right up....imagine that Thought I could just jack plane these smooth....plane was a bit too big, for this job... The Stanley No. 3c that I had just rehabbed, happened to be sitting out, where I could grab it...seemed to do a decent enough job.. I even used it to joint a few edges... Got one looking decent enough as for width...needed trimmed on the ends for square, though.. Works for me. Got a few all the same width, mainly by bandsawing to width. was able to gang a bunch up.. Used the #3c again. to make them all the same width. Had two pieces, came from the same board.. Figured I could book-match these two into a panel for a lid....they needed a bit of work, one end being wider than the other end...bandsaw to correct that, plane to do the edges straight...try to make the grain as close as i could.. May need to add a bit, to get to the width I need. Set the thin stuff aside, for now.. These will be sawn down into 1" to1-1/2" wide strips....to make the frames to house those thin panels..had to set up a jig on the saw... Set for 1" width, for now....may go with the 1-1/2" instead....more to work with. Made a big mess today... May be about time to bring the trashcan back down to the shop? May need to do some glue-ups, and make some frames. Stay tuned...will see IF I can get this done, before next Tuesday morning...
August 1, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Well, got the trash can back down to the shop....and that pile tossed into it....along with a few scraps I couldn't use.. Got the 1-1/2" wide parts milled.. And..I hope enough of the 1" wide stuff, for the end frames.. The wide stuff also has to make a frame for the lid's panel to sit in... Found a few extra pieces....some became frame parts..some will be panel parts.. Piece of pine 1 x 6 is for when I am chopping things.... Panel for the lid is sitting in a forest of clamps.. Was a ROYAL PITA to glue and clamp up. C clamps are holding a pair of cauls....one pair on each end. Will let this set a day or so... Maybe tomorrow, I can whittle this stack of parts down into a few frames.. And maybe a lid? We'll see...stay tuned...
August 2, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok...took a bunch of measurements today...and drew out a "Plan" Not every day I resort to such things....I am trying to make a Maple version of this little box.. That was made with Walnut and Cherry.... So...a cut list of sorts was made. These are the corner posts for the front and back frames...had to cut a few down to size...needed to be 3/4" thick ( not 4/4) needed to be 1-1/2", and not wavy. And needed to be 8-1/2" long. Smaller mitre box for the lengths...bandsaw to rip for the rest. Stanley No. 3c to smooth things out, and make them all match....same with the end's corner posts...needed 4 of those, but only 1" wide.. same routine again. These will be the end corner posts. They will also get a tongue milled along the edge where it meets the front posts, which will have a matching groove. Set these aside...things changed a bit, for the next item on the list. The four rails for the front and back frames...Supposed to be 12-5/8" long...mine only came to 11-3/4"? Design change! Two were easy enough to mill....the other two need a lot more work.. I could trim the first two to length, and plane them to 1-1/8" wide...as they were 3/4" thick....the other two were too thick, too wide, too long...bandsaw to get rid of the excess...then the plane smoothed things out.. Not the easiest stuff to plane, either. Millers Falls No. 11, Junior Jack. Has no camber to it's iron. Finally got all four of these parts done, to where they matched each other.. Decided to set the parts out to check how the layout came out..front frame? fancy? And the rear frame.. Not so fancy. There was a problem, though...while I did have one panel that MIGHT fit.. It wasn't the one I wanted to use...the problem? The longest of them was a bit too short.... Hmmm...then I remembered....tenons! I have to mill tenons on the ends of the rails! Maybe shrink the frames enough for the Maple panels to actually get used? Design change! Still need to mill the rails for the ends.....I think I have a few panels that might fit there... Stay tuned..
August 2, 20187 yr Author Popular Post A little more got done, today....before I was told to go out and mow the yard.....and not a single beer in the house....tain't right Changed the Stanley 45 from a dado plane back to a groove cutter....had to make sure the groove cutter (#12) matched a fancy cutter 1/4" "Match" cutter...cuts a 1/4" tongue, to fit in the 1/4" groove the other cutter makes.....need the grooves cut, first....a LOT of them.. All set up. Spurs have beenrotated back up, out of the way. Set things up to plough a few grooves.. Two screw heads....didn't hold worth a.....added a pine backstop to replace the far end's screw These four are the corner posts, for the front and back frames. Length was a tad off...so, after the first set of grooves were milled Ganged them up, one end all the same....saw cut the other ends square, and they all matched.. Works for me...There was a second groove to be milled on these corner posts. This one was for the raised panel, the other was for the tongue to sit in.. And, as usual...one post was too thick....we have ways....got the four all grooved up.. Then worked on the four rails....two get a single groove, as they are the top rails....raised panel groove only...the two rails fro the bottom, also needed a groove to house a panel for the bottom of the box.. You can also see the entire jig I used...Trimmed the panels to length....and ganged them up in the vise.. And let Junior Jack joint them all the same width. Set these aside for a bit, wanted the feet profiles done.. Then used one of the thin panels to layout the tenons on the rails... Haunched tenons, at that, will fill the groove while the tenon goes on in. Got all four rails done.. Need to set up for chopping mortises, next trip to the shop....Also have one panel in the clamps And a lot of cussing....will let this sit awhile, before the other panel gets glued up....this will be a raised panel, once it has been planed flat. Yard was mowed...sitting here by the A/C unit....debating on another trip to the shop... Stay tuned.

For all the dummies like me: Chatoyancy In gemology, chatoyancy, or chatoyance or cat's eye effect, is an optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones. Coined from the French "œil de chat", meaning "cat's eye", chatoyancy arises either from the fibrous structure of a material, as in tiger's eye quartz, or from fibrous inclusions or cavities within the stone, as in cat's eye chrysoberyl.More at Wikipedia Herb
August 3, 20187 yr Author Popular Post We even had a Midnight Special going on, tonight.. First panel out of the clamps...getting fitted for size....had a dry fit, as well No glue, yet...used this to size the panels...BTW, mortises are done on this frame.. Second panel is in the clamps.. Let this set until morning....Planed the first panel flat... lew will like this one. Got it sized for width, trimmed down, and jointed the edge... Waiting on the front frame to get assembled...this will be it's panel..... "Let the Midnight Special....shine it's light on me.." Stay tuned...waiting on Wolfman Jack to show up....

August 3, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Working on a second Mountain Dew & Tonic....with a lot of Ice. Got the second panel out of the clamps....decided to try to make it a raised panel ala Paul Sellers. End grain done first, and checked for fit.. Got both ends done...turned things a bit.. Layout line is 3/4" in from the edge. Once all four edges are done..might as well glue and clamp the back frame together.. And set this aside until tomorrow...front panel also got "raised", and set aside...had four holes to chop.. Two on this corner post..... Then two on the other end...then glue and clamps again.. Also checked for square on both frames.. Just enough room, too. Which leaves the two end frames to do... Already have the four corner posts....need to make the rest of the parts...maybe tomorrow, I can get something done? Unless...I get bored later this evening....and try again in the shop....stay tuned.
August 5, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Wasn't all that great in the shop, today....started out ok....got the front and back frames out of the clamps...then ganged them up to match the edges up.. Ran the plane around a bit.. Ok, set these two aside, for now...got the four corner posts for the end frame cut the final length, clamped into the vise Was having issues with one of these....it fought while getting a groove milled, then it didn't like the next operation.. Fought so hard, after the third time it flew to the floor...it then flew into the trashcan...and I made a new corner post....the other three decided to behave Finally got the posts as done as they needed to be.. Had one more chore to do to these parts....I clamped one to the front frame.. Even used the compass to do a bit of drawing....then cut away the waste.. Then used this as a pattern to cut the other three....why the tongue? So when I go to glue this mess up, this T & G joint will line things up. Thenworked on a set of rails.. Reset the Stanley 45 back to cutting grooves, again...( it just clears that screw..barely) then cut a stubby tenon on each end of the rails.. Which left panels to do. Didn't have enough Maple panel stock...so I cut a couple from this stuff... Had to flatten them, then do the raised panel thingy...( thinking this MIGHT be Cherry?) Then clamps and glue.... Trying to keep the clamp's pads ON the tongue, isn't the easiest to do....somehow managed to get both end frames into the clamps.. Let's just say...that hammer came in very handy........just wasn't in the mood for having items back-talk me And this was about half of what I had to sweep up, today.....will let things cure til morning..had enough "FUN" for today Debating on whether I'll run a groove all the way across the bottom where the bottom panel will go....or...just a cleat. We'll see. Might even get a start on the lid...maybe? Stay tuned..
August 5, 20187 yr Author End frames came out of the clamps today....and one post popped right off.. More glue, and this time a few nails, to make sure it stays put. Checked the location of where the bottom panel will hit the ends...wasn't enough room for a groove....so.. Panel was cut to size, and notched to fit,,,,with a little bit of room for the solid wood to expand....Yes, I glued this mess up, today.. One clamp to pull things square, as usual. One other pipe clamp was needed, as the F style ones didn't have enough hp to close a gap.... Laid out the parts for the lid, one of those long, skinny boards will get to make the two ends. Whenever this thing gets off of my bench, that is...bandsaw was needed to cut a thin sliver of maple.... Either the tongue was off-center, or the groove was....too much to plane away....will glue the sliver to match the gap, then plane it smooth along with the rest of the corners. Soo, leaves tomorrow to get things done...Tuesday is Lab testing day in Columbus OSU Heart Center....Wednesday is surgery day....Thursday I get to come back home, and let a hole in the leg heal up.....for about a week.....Three round trips to Columbus, OH.......for the van...lot of road trip.

My last two trips to the spa they went in through the right wrist and just stuck a bandaid over it when they were done. Hope it turns out the way YOU want it.
August 6, 20187 yr Author Ok..yes it is a Monday...trying to get a project done while I can..... Took the box out of the clamps today....and it didn't fly apart Couple places needed filled, others needed planed and sanded, stuck the box into the vise... Need a filler strip along the bottom here...planed and sanded to match the rest.. Couple high spots needed work....dusted this thing off, got out the almost empty can of Amber Shellac.. One coat, to seal this up...may need another coat? Back didn't look too bad..... Front looks..ok.....laid out the main parts for a lid... Need to plane the panel flat, then turn it into a raised panel.....need to cut another part exactly in half... As this will be the two ends of the lid. Need to joint the edges , before the Stanley 45 can plough a few grooves. May try later this evening, IF the shop cools down a bit....."Start Time" in the morning? be ON the road by 0500.... May be a short night, tonight...we'll see...stay tuned..
