steven newman Posted February 21, 2018 Author Report Posted February 21, 2018 File has been started at VA....more stuff to fill out, now.... Took a few 1 x 6 planks to the shop.. Not the easiest thing to do...getting a 8' long board down there. Managed to haul one at a time. mark each for a couple crosscuts.. Just a few basic tools...length was 40". Used a couple bench dogs to keep the plank from moving around too much... One to push against.. The other was to keep the board from rotating around Got the first two planks done....there was an "issue" though... 40" hit right about here....hmmm....since I cut a profile to shape the "feet" of the case...guess where this knot will be.. That board is now the center of the 3 board glue up... Need to mill a rebate along the back edges of the panels....should be able to rebate right over this ...thing. Managed to get #3 plank to the shop, cut to sizes needed. Then I stacked all 6 parts up on the bench, and clamped them down until they were flat.. Will let the stack sit overnight...maybe tomorrow, I can joint a few edges, and spread a wee bit of glue....stay tuned. Al B, p_toad, Grandpadave52 and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted February 22, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 22, 2018 Quick workout in the shop, today.....after the errands the Boss wanted to run....shot about half a day.. Apron was hanging in my way.. Yep, I know it is mine... Guess I had better put it on, and get to work? Had to remove the clamps, sort through the parts to find three that almost matched each other....One was marked "Center" and another needed a curved edge straightened out......clamped that into the Crochet and leg vise.. Just a wooden "hook", you whack on the other end of a board, and drive the board until it is tight, then close the leg vise....needed a jointer plane, to joint 40" of edge...might have one .. Seemed to do the job...type of plane? Just tuned it up last week, in fact....Got the edges to where they all matched, and made a stack.. No glue (yet) no clamps, they are just sitting there....spread some glue on the edges...first I had to slide the boards a bit, hard to clamp into the Crochet..Spread a bead of glue on one edge, next board was placed into the glue, mooshed back and forth a bit, until it "stuck", repeat for the other board... The finger clamp is just to hold things..not very tight...needed it for the cauls, anyway....just glue holding things here... 4 clamps and two cauls.. Caul down on the far end is sitting ON the top of the bench. I sorted through the other three boards.. I think this will be the center board of the second panel..... With the rain that keeps going through the area..I didn't want to set anything down on the floor....and maybe get wet. I can leave the glue-up where it is, for now. Maybe in the morning, I can work on the second panel..then start on webframes...maybe? Stay tuned Gerald, lew, p_toad and 4 others 7 Quote

steven newman Posted February 22, 2018 Author Report Posted February 22, 2018 Well, today was...different....two power outages....restart after the second one..did not go so well.... In-between them, I managed to get Panel #1 set aside, sans clamps.. Sitting all the way back there. The mess to the left? Is Panel #2 Had to use old Heft & Hubris again. . Couple edges had a bit of curve to them....made some nice shavings, for such a HUGE plane.. This time around, I used a couple pipe clamps..first one to clamp right in the center..then I worked towards the ends. Doubled up the cauls...I made sure the center of the panel was flat, and clamped down. Then the cauls to pull the ends flat I also added a couple extra clamps. Two cauls at the other end were a bit crowded.. Finding some use for those pieces of scrap Ash.... Waiting on this one to cure, tomorrow morning I can clean both panels up, cut a profile for the feet, and lay out for shelves and such....might even mill a rebate for the plywood back. Then I'll know about what size to build four webframes to....Stay tuned..... HARO50, Grandpadave52 and Cal 3 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted February 24, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 24, 2018 Grrrrr everytime I think I could sneak off to the shop...The Boss needed to run errands. Wasted MOST of the day sitting in the van, while she was in the stores....throw in a round-trip to Huber Heights.....left me maybe an hour to do...something Second panel is out of the clamps...and a clean up started... Worked a bit on some high spots.. Then brought panel #1 over and placed it on #2...just to see how well they matched up.....meh....ran the square a bit.. I think a plane could "shoot" this edge. Panel was a hair wider,, About ~ 1/8" or so....will clamp the two panels together, then run the #8 along until they DO match....One end will take MORE than a shooting plane.. Sooo, while these two are clamped together, I can run a saw across both..THEN maybe they will match. If and when they do..I can cut a foot profile out. Then the real fun ( and cussing) can begin... steven newman Posted February 25, 2018 Author Report Posted February 25, 2018 Back started to stiffen up, today...worked in the shop until 1700 hrs....then closed up shop...might have got a wee bit done, though.. Ganged the two panels up, to figure which was inside or outside faces. Clamped them together, and set up a fence jig...needed to square the ends This is the jig I post on WOOD Forums long ago, as a fence for a jobsite saw. Been in use ever since. Set the distance between the saw blade and the edge of the shoe. Check for square, and make the cut....the circular saw IS a Vintage one, BTW. Got both ends squared up...which left the edges in need of a little work...since the panels were already clamped together... There was a couple spots, where this huge plane wouldn't cut...we have ways.. Jack took care of those trouble spots the long plane was skipping over. Hmmm, as long as these two are still clamped together.. I could get a few toys out, layout the pattern for the bottom of the case...and saw that out... If they are to match each other..might as well do both at the same time. Finally marked out for inside and the back of each panel.. Then got out the reason my left thumb is sore, as well.. As I needed to mill that rebate. The case's back panel will get glued and screwed here. Had a scrap of the plywood, to make sure I was deep enough.. Got things laid out and set up, to make use of this little gadget...I also cut one 1x2 x8. One was a stile for the face frame, two were for the web-frames, and a small leftover scrap. Used the framing square to layout a few lines.. Needed a space for corner blocks to attach a top, then two lines for the webframe. the a space for the kicker, and a drawer side, to layout for the "runners" the drawer will slide on. Then marked out for the bottom and middle shelves. Dovetail bit to mark a center line.. The CL is where I pull from. Once I know how far in from the edge of the router's base's edge to the center of the collet, then I can mark where the fence will be set up. Mark a line for the fence to be set to..and away we go.. Close enough. Made all four slots on one panel..used the layout lines to layout the second panel.. I use those little tick marks and the framing square to mark lines to set the fence to..and an arrow telling me which side of the line gets the slot..set up and make four more cuts.. Had to use a "Climb Cut" to avoid blowing this spot out.. Came in from the edge into the knotty with the bit spinning the "wrong" way. Tight hold on both handles, and press against the fence...the a clean-up cut coming back the other way.... That will do for the panels, for now...need to start cutting parts for the webframes....set up a small mitresaw for that..AFTER I cleaned the shop up.. I can save the large one for tenon work. Back was hurting, time to stop....maybe tomorrow, I can start cutting parts? Stay tuned p_toad, Cal, HARO50 and 1 other 4 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted February 26, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 26, 2018 Need to get as much done as I can....as I am not always able to get to the shop some days....too many errands Today? Got all the 1 x 2 s to the shop....thenran the saw for a little while.. These nine will be for the rails and a kicker for the web-frames. The worst looking of this bunch will be the kicker.. These 8 will be the front and back stiles of the webframes.. Fun part was moving them 8 footers around and onto the mitresaw...dug a few splinters out, as well... More cutting.. I cut 12 of these things, these are the "pick of the litter" and will be rails for the face frame...which means I needed two stiles for the face frame.. So..now I can put this mitresaw away, and set up the other one.. Need to set up to make shoulder cuts on a bunch of tenons....Need to reset the depth stops.. They limit how far down the saw will cut. Will have to raise this one up a bit. Along with the front one. needed to get a stock holder set up, too This helps hold the piece to the fence...frees up a hand for other things.. Tomorrow being Monday, and the shop tends to be closed...we'll see....stay tuned Grandpadave52, HARO50, Cal and 2 others 5 Quote
steven newman Posted February 26, 2018 Author Report Posted February 26, 2018 I don't wanna, I don't wanna....guess I had better at least try....got the entire afternoon to "waste IN the shop.....VA needs MORE info on their forms, can wait until tomorrow....Yard chores done, wore me out a bit....junk in the yard is now in a dumpster... steven newman Posted February 26, 2018 Author Report Posted February 26, 2018 Well, a chisel took a swipe at my hand...poked a hole in it....wasn't going to be a "good" day... Hung the saw up with the others... Will have to get that little saw down...later...got the mitre box ready to be stowed away.. Got the parts sorted out, ones that can wait are stashed out of the way. Dug up the mortise jig.. And have it ready. Needed to find out what size tenons to cut... Set a scrap onto the top of the panels, to mark where the rails will go...both front and back....laid a rail blank to find out a center point, and mark for tenon lengths.. Then a couple lines about 1/4" in, to show where the tenon cuts would go. Next, the mitre saw was set for depth of cut.. saw down until I just touch the line, then set up the depth stops... With the saw's spine resting on the bearings. Took a couple tries..finally got it right... used the bandsaw to cut the cheek cuts...then a bit of trimming.. Then made the rest of the shoulder cuts...at the mitre saw.. Both ends were done like this...Tried to clean a few edges up.. Wanted a better edge for sliding on the bandsaw... Then decided to clean them edges, one more time.. Just to get the worst of it off. Tenons done..thought I could set up for the mortises.. Jig is in place. fingerclamp ready, couple of chisels, and a saw..missing something... It's here, somewhere....second mortise is done, too... Laid out.... Then saw the lines. Set the saw aside.. And chop out the waste....then a test fit... Got two of these done...camera battery was going dead, I was getting sore...Swept the floor, and closed the shop....about 2 hours or so of shoptime? One stile is done..only 7 more to do....next time..stay tuned HARO50 and Cal 2 Quote
