Been on a vacation from woodworking...last one was a LOT of work.

Daughter looked at the new cabinet, and hinted she would like one for her place....

One thing, though....she WILL paint things...

Sooo....thinking of building a "Paint-grade" one out of Pine......with a couple changes.    She also wanted a "Dresser"  so maybe instead of the large door in the base cabinet...maybe a few more drawers ( to hold "drawers"?) instead of shelves?

About another week or so..I can go over to Menard's, and sort through the 1x pine boards....might take all afternoon....and come home with the supplies needed...will have to buy a 1/4" sheet of Luann...for backs and bottoms....Trying to figure out the sizes of the 1xs....1x6s?  1x8s?   Couple of 1 x10s?  ( for the bookcase)   Lengths?

Last project used up about 45 bf of Ash....:o

Just a start-up.....Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is working on the "details"  might take all of next week....moving at the speed of smell?

Will post updates, as they happen...

Update#1...

Daughter has vetoed the drawers in the lower cabinet,  wants three shelves to slide bins into...no door, either...will make the lower unit a tad higher..

Upper cabinet will stat the same....ok for pine.   Need to go out and buy one of the bins she wants to use..to get the spacings needed.  Then I can figure the lumber needed....

OK, Gin & Tonic to oust Uncle Charles from the back of my legs...

Daughter stopped by, showed her the wire baskets....and found out what baskets  she really wanted.    The two wire ones will go into the drawer, that I NOW get to build,  all else the same as the one of Ash.....just made of Paint-grade Pine, now....

Not enough in the weekend's budget to go out and buy a load of pine....soooo..

I may do a little something with that  stack of left-over Ash.....and post a build along for that...

Lacking  motivation today....no shoptime:(

Took a look at the Basket Daughter does want to use....base unit will have to grown another 4-5" in height.   Been doing a "Cut List"  in my head...

Head hurts...but..here goes

Base Unit.    Needs enough 1 x 6s to make two glued up panels..3/4 x 16" x 40"....may need three 1 x 6 x 8'

Shelves (2) need a 3/4 x 2' x 4' plywood panel.  one saw cut to make the two shelves...

Drawer:  thought about a 1 x 8 x 8......might just use a 1 x 6 x 8'   front and two sides...might be able to use the leftover for the back

Needs a 1/4" Luann plywood panel 1/4" x 24 x 48 for the back of the case, and the bottom of the drawer.

Need enough 1 x 2 x 8'  for two webframes, and the face frame.

Top of base unit:  one 1 x 8 x 8'  three board glue up.   26" wide top.

Book case:

1 x 10s for the two sides, three shelves.

Top will get a 1 x 10 and a 1 x 2 glue up

Door panel...1 x 8 x 8'   three pieces to make the glue up,  using one board.   28" long pieces

Door frame and face frame...more 1 x 2 x 8'

Daughter also wants that mini drawer.....will see what is left over.

Enough 1/4 Luann for the back...and the bottom of the Mini-me drawer.

That should do for a start...as soon as funds come in....

As for the Ash project.....we'll see...stay tuned....

Will try to do this just like the last Project.....I get the base unit done, first.   Maybe buy enough to just do the base first, then do the bookcase when I can get the boards for it.

I think you must be using the 2 cell Sketchup on this one!

  • Author

Nope, still just a single cell...need the other one to breathe....

Pine for just the base unit...$35,  Plywood about $23....haven't priced the lumber for the bookcase..yet.

Need to ask the Boss for a few $20 dollar bills.....stay tuned..

OK, have a shopping list made out...getting set to go buy a few boards.....shopping list so I don't wind up a board short, somewhere...

My son is footing the lumber bill, too.     Will report when I get the stuff to the shop...

3/4" plywood shelves are not on the list....will make two more webframes, and add a layer of 1/4" Luann to the topside....May need a center rail....

Got over to Sidney, OH a bit late....Lowes was closed.   Menard's had the same 1/4" plywood...$0.40 more.....will save a second trip tomorrow, in gas and time.

Sorted through the piles in the racks.....pick of the litter?   Meh..good thing this will be painted..sheesh  Their Premium brand was a tad too much in price...cost more than the Ash I bought!    The boards will take a bit of selective cutting....and no small amount of work.

Letting the boards just sit in the house for a day or three....

I did find a 1 x 6 x 8' with Birdseye figure.....maybe a drawer front or two?

Two plywood panels..one was 1/2" wider than the other?

Pick of the litter...

A herd of 1 x 2s (6) and the single 1 x 8 x 8'...smooth on one face only....will be a panel for the top of the case...there are four 1 x 6s....3 will be cut @40" long, and then a three piece glue up for the sides.   The fourth  1 x 6 is a bit.."Special"..

5a8b2b2581b33_BirdseyePine.jpg.c77a59df12d4954bcc90e69430688594.jpg

Going to make a drawer front out of the best section....set the rest aside....I have a "spare" 1 x 6 available for the sides of the drawer.   When I go after parts for the Bookcase, I look for a few more of these boards...for the raised panel door.   She can paint everything else BUT the Birdseye....

Letting this mess get used to the house for a few days....

As she knock all that pine and other scraps onto the floor.....had to move the pile of Ash scraps of the bench..

To a safer place, where the cats won't be jumping through....rest of the tools were put away...

Tool well was even swept out!    Users stashed, non-users put away.   Left the squares out, to be ready for a little layout work..

I think I have the bases covered....chisels were sorted out, users into the bench til, non-users into a drawer..

A motley crew?    Have the mitre saw all set up and ready..

5a8ba34bf3685_mitresaw.jpg.cfa23f05f45eaa9ce63db956c37e545c.jpg

Might even find a use for these other things..

Besides just hanging around?    Not sure IF I'll need another item..

Maybe some smaller stuff?  Runs great.  Mitre gauge is sitting like that, because I merely sat it down, to keep it with the saw.

Just about ready to do a bit of woodworking?    Maybe after the VA  stuff is done....we'll see.

I think too many of these daughters have been looking at Pinterest in their wire basket section. Both daughters mentioned lots of cute ideas using baskets. I remember the milk man who use to deliver milk to our house... All his containers on his truck were a form of wire baskets.  What goes around comes around..

Got one pretty much like that. Craftsman 10" right? It was my first band-saw...bought it at a yard sale along with a stand and Craftsman 6", 4x36 sander all for $75. When I get to do things, I still use it frequently.

Good little band-saw, just limited on re-saw width. IMO. My miter gauge is a little different but not sure it's the original...that and it's currently set at 90o:P

Obviously Shop-cat was bored and looking for somewhere to curl up.:D

Hope things went OK at the VA!
