This was the scene this morning..

C clamps and visegrip finger clamps to glue in cleats.    Panel will become the bottom of the box....

59b440287f935_clampsoff.jpg.dfd1fbefac2c090ad6f931b8bb7f4b8b.jpg

After all them clamps were taken off.   Panel was a tad too wide, and had a wavy end..

vise.jpg.117c5694dec7a905df0c016349264b83.jpg

Clamped it up in the vise.   Used the "new" Stanley No. 4 to adjust the sizes..

shavings.jpg.3a8a06da0370a3972492128351d35500.jpg

Shavings were a tad too thin...took a while.    Test fits..

Just a hair of a gap.   Should be about the right fit.   May add a small "dot" of glue under it, right at the center of the panel...no nails, or screws needed.

Did a bit of trading today......couple of my items for a "stick" of Black Walnut...3/4" x 4" x 7'.......Maybe I can make a lid for this box?

Stay tuned...

Stretch the walnut...would be good for rails...how about a raised panel lid too? Just a crazy thought.

I'm really liking this "box" / "chest"...great design and execution.

  • Author

Three pieces are now in the clamps, waiting on the glue to dry.    have enough, I think:rolleyes:, to make a raised panel AND a frame out of the Walnut.

Battery for the camera is in it's charger, for now.....

Ok...camera charged back up...

59b47ecdd2f50_panelgluedup.jpg.8a51e8aff70b154ecc30d1f93570df65.jpg

Three board glue up....will be a raised panel tomorrow..I hope..

59b47f37ecea9_Longrailblank.jpg.c9536a0c83547ddd0aad5c17ec6a255f.jpg

Needed to split this right down the middle.....long rails for the frame...

59b47f9ae0423_shortrailblanks.jpg.251ca38d98985980c2e178dc79613bfc.jpg

Two blanks for the "short" rails....I clamped the two long rails back to back and clamped them into the vise...

A bit rough around the edges?   We have ways...

59b4806c6f290_juniorjackplane.jpg.ba777d89e078bb46fcf3a141d115ef6b.jpg

Junior Jack plane, seemed to do a decent enough job...

planed.jpg.9a1412c57e7a444428ae6b39ec7e85f8.jpg

Short rails needed to match each other, as well.   One needed to be sent over to the bandsaw..was wee bit too much to plane off.   All these  pieces were cut to rough length with the Langdon mitre box.

Let the panel "cook" overnight...tomorrow, I can trim it to size, and get it beveled...maybe.   need to reset the Stanley 45 to plough a few grooves..again.

Stay tuned...

I like it already and it's still being held "captive.":P

No longer "captive"   and has been "leveled"

leveled.jpg.835044f3b9523914579d39750ced22ce.jpg

Then a jig was built..

jigged.jpg.ae6f451fa9da21fb103bd3f51345bffc.jpg

Marked a stop line, and used a couple planes...

beveled.jpg.3cb9d1f3f051a44cd88262e113104e2e.jpg

Beveled the end grain first.    Then re-adjusted the jig to do the long grain edges.   Was looking for a nice sharp cornercorner.jpg.3842f4c2ee9483876037955e273fcaff.jpg

Not too bad?  i used two Stanley #4 planes...

planes.jpg.98287c2130bb4e7eb376bbeb22a276c6.jpg

The #4c was set to "hog off" most of the waste, the regular #4 was set for a finer cut, to finish the cuts,

59b5d8af9c344_newjig.jpg.5d148b9ce82b0fc9f03b6f29ef9de042.jpg

Re-made the jig.   Needed to run the Stanley 45 around.   rails needed a groove milled, to house the raised panel..

groovy.jpg.b4d2d6d50e2ef89a8401de5de2cce6e9.jpg

Will just have to do...decided to try to glue this mess up...

59b5d94fbc405_backsideview.jpg.1090910bd31642d3e5ba0b1c4372993a.jpg

Each  corner needed a pair of cauls, to keep things flat.    Trying to tighten a c clamp while holding two cauls in place....results?

59b5d9bc0a875_frontview.jpg.d8db9975f978d1162463b648c079a893.jpg

Will let this set overnight.    Need to find some hinges.   Just a lid....

Spent a little time this morning. The Plane til needed things moved around a bit.   Jumbo Jack , and Junior Jack planes needed a bit more room.  Cut and fitted the holders a bit..

59b5da80657fa_planetil.jpg.9ecc5627546c165a1f6eadb61fc5a680.jpg

The "extras" to the left?   I might have to build an "add-on" for them.   The Stanley #8 isn't even in the picture!   Don't have any more room to the right..

tils.jpg.3ae973d022d543773cdba4a37d03789b.jpg

getting a bit crowded...again...

May check on the glue up..later.    had a Migraine pay a visit today.....takes all the fun out of things..

Stay tuned....trying to figure out a tray.....maybe?

I'm glad we ;)decided to go with the raised pane lid:lol: That walnut has spectacular grain...very befitting for this project.

Quite a collection  stash of cordless tools you've got going there:P

"Not too bad?  i used two Stanley #4 planes..."  there's a huge understatement, corners are sharp enough to cut skin!

Sure do like this box.

Take a close look at them feet....see anything special?

Maybe tomorrow, I can sand this back a bit, and add the hinges?

Don't tell me YOU used a powered router with a cove bit?1?1?

All I can say is that walnut about popped out of Ohio with the amber shellac...and that's only one coat. WOW!!

Love the handle detail too...did you rout a finger groove in the bottom? Just curious.;)

  • Author

Haven't made a finger groove...yet.....we'll see...

yes, I do use a router when I don't have a plane that can make a certain profile....

  • Author

Finger groove has been made..using a gouge.....hinges have been installed.....Trays?   Cancelled.   Wasn't looking right,  wasn't the right sizes of parts....maybe next time, I'll try to make a few....

Film @ 2300 hrs....after Coat #2 is on.....

Very NICE! That would be a treasure in any home!

gouge.jpg.3cc0b7e99ba5708bd82c68d8feddf9fb.jpg

Used this little (1" wide!)  gouge to make a finger rest under the lip of the lid..

59b872aa8c0b8_fingerrest.jpg.c24b196d31305eae45e2b20708ea6aae.jpg

Hey, I never said I knew HOW to  carve.....I also got the hinges installed...

hinged.jpg.08d0c9a8a66b8cf1911e8d9430c925b0.jpg

And...on the first try, no less!    Ok, close the lid, before something flies in there..

59b87340653a8_topoflid.jpg.40433cdf489022e18115bd73c2cad4cf.jpg

Then a look at the front..

59b8738cbef83_frontview.jpg.fce84ee24a5d1b439169a396fe2062c6.jpg

Cherry is showing up a bit yellow...I'll let this sit in a window, and then see how it looks...

59b873f0d68f1_endpanel.jpg.aece8d2f8144601d50ecae0512597a4a.jpg

One of the ends.   A little bit of showy grain?   Black streak on the edge of the lid?    That be a big,old knot.

Then one of the hinge side..

59b8748447e26_hingeside.jpg.4ea6e5d56b375f06c087d2799d1303d7.jpg

May have to get the measurements later.....About 15" or so  wide.

"Just  one small chest, hardly overflowing...."

Beautiful chest

Great idea & touch to the lid...glad ya' thought of it.;) Now you can justify why you bought the gouge.:P

Glad you reminded me; I keep forgetting to ask the dimensions...when it's thoroughly dry & you get the chance.

The small cove detail on the legs and lower apron stretcher  really works well and looks good. glad you added that touch EVEN IF you had to use a tool with a cord on it.

Thanks for taking us along again on the build. Don't forget to add this to your gallery here and be sure you sign & date it on the bottom. Day one of an heirloom to be is about over.
