September 9, 20178 yr Author This was the scene this morning.. C clamps and visegrip finger clamps to glue in cleats. Panel will become the bottom of the box.... After all them clamps were taken off. Panel was a tad too wide, and had a wavy end.. Clamped it up in the vise. Used the "new" Stanley No. 4 to adjust the sizes.. Shavings were a tad too thin...took a while. Test fits.. Just a hair of a gap. Should be about the right fit. May add a small "dot" of glue under it, right at the center of the panel...no nails, or screws needed. Did a bit of trading today......couple of my items for a "stick" of Black Walnut...3/4" x 4" x 7'.......Maybe I can make a lid for this box? Stay tuned...

Stretch the walnut...would be good for rails...how about a raised panel lid too? Just a crazy thought. I'm really liking this "box" / "chest"...great design and execution.
September 9, 20178 yr Author Three pieces are now in the clamps, waiting on the glue to dry. have enough, I think, to make a raised panel AND a frame out of the Walnut. Battery for the camera is in it's charger, for now.....
September 10, 20178 yr Author Ok...camera charged back up... Three board glue up....will be a raised panel tomorrow..I hope.. Needed to split this right down the middle.....long rails for the frame... Two blanks for the "short" rails....I clamped the two long rails back to back and clamped them into the vise... A bit rough around the edges? We have ways... Junior Jack plane, seemed to do a decent enough job... Short rails needed to match each other, as well. One needed to be sent over to the bandsaw..was wee bit too much to plane off. All these pieces were cut to rough length with the Langdon mitre box. Let the panel "cook" overnight...tomorrow, I can trim it to size, and get it beveled...maybe. need to reset the Stanley 45 to plough a few grooves..again. Stay tuned...
September 11, 20178 yr Author No longer "captive" and has been "leveled" Then a jig was built.. Marked a stop line, and used a couple planes... Beveled the end grain first. Then re-adjusted the jig to do the long grain edges. Was looking for a nice sharp corner Not too bad? i used two Stanley #4 planes... The #4c was set to "hog off" most of the waste, the regular #4 was set for a finer cut, to finish the cuts, Re-made the jig. Needed to run the Stanley 45 around. rails needed a groove milled, to house the raised panel.. Will just have to do...decided to try to glue this mess up... Each corner needed a pair of cauls, to keep things flat. Trying to tighten a c clamp while holding two cauls in place....results? Will let this set overnight. Need to find some hinges. Just a lid.... Spent a little time this morning. The Plane til needed things moved around a bit. Jumbo Jack , and Junior Jack planes needed a bit more room. Cut and fitted the holders a bit.. The "extras" to the left? I might have to build an "add-on" for them. The Stanley #8 isn't even in the picture! Don't have any more room to the right.. getting a bit crowded...again... May check on the glue up..later. had a Migraine pay a visit today.....takes all the fun out of things.. Stay tuned....trying to figure out a tray.....maybe?

September 11, 20178 yr "Not too bad? i used two Stanley #4 planes..." there's a huge understatement, corners are sharp enough to cut skin!
September 12, 20178 yr Author Popular Post One coat of Amber shellac....just to seal things.. Mainly to see where it needs a bit of work at.. No hardware has been installed, yet Missed a few spots on the edge of the lid....get those next coat. Take a close look at them feet....see anything special? Maybe tomorrow, I can sand this back a bit, and add the hinges?

All I can say is that walnut about popped out of Ohio with the amber shellac...and that's only one coat. WOW!! Love the handle detail too...did you rout a finger groove in the bottom? Just curious.
September 12, 20178 yr Author Haven't made a finger groove...yet.....we'll see... yes, I do use a router when I don't have a plane that can make a certain profile....
September 12, 20178 yr Author Finger groove has been made..using a gouge.....hinges have been installed.....Trays? Cancelled. Wasn't looking right, wasn't the right sizes of parts....maybe next time, I'll try to make a few.... Film @ 2300 hrs....after Coat #2 is on.....
September 12, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Roh-kay, here we go....finish is done....among over things... Used this little (1" wide!) gouge to make a finger rest under the lip of the lid.. Hey, I never said I knew HOW to carve.....I also got the hinges installed... And...on the first try, no less! Ok, close the lid, before something flies in there.. Then a look at the front.. Cherry is showing up a bit yellow...I'll let this sit in a window, and then see how it looks... One of the ends. A little bit of showy grain? Black streak on the edge of the lid? That be a big,old knot. Then one of the hinge side.. May have to get the measurements later.....About 15" or so wide. "Just one small chest, hardly overflowing...."

Now you can justify why you bought the gouge. 2 hours ago, steven newman said: May have to get the measurements later.....About 15" or so wide. Glad you reminded me; I keep forgetting to ask the dimensions...when it's thoroughly dry & you get the chance. The small cove detail on the legs and lower apron stretcher really works well and looks good. glad you added that touch EVEN IF you had to use a tool with a cord on it. Thanks for taking us along again on the build. Don't forget to add this to your gallery here and be sure you sign & date it on the bottom. Day one of an heirloom to be is about over.
