September 4, 20178 yr Popular Post Ok, Chester Drawers is done ( when I get better lighting, I post as Project) so, what is next...? "Scrap Stack" of Cherry. Not much to look at? Decided to plane a few faces, to see what I have.. Made a mess on the bench (again..) but this time it is with that Stanley No. 4 I had just rehabbed.....was making some see-through shavings, too.. Yes, that $8 plane made that. Some of the faces looked very good.. Nice grain? One board may cause a bit of trouble.. Ya think? Plan right now, is to re-saw the best sides off at around 1/2" to 3/8" thick. Then see about building a fancy-schmanzy box? Hope that Boris doesn't steal my Plans.... Might have enough Black Walnut to make a matching box? Have a bit of thin Poplar for the bottoms.. According to Charles Neil, this is supposed to be Flame Cherry....might be a decent project? Stay tuned...
September 5, 20178 yr Maybe a night stand to go with the chest of drawers. Or as you put in just a box to sit atop the chest of drawers.
September 5, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Ok, updates.... Some Dummy decided he was "BORED" and went to the shop....didn't end well Somehow managed to get these all the same width, and at least one good edge jointed....made a little jig.. I cut a point on the end of one board, and attached to the resaw jig with a couple screws. Took a couple tries, to get it to fit in here....kept the second cut-off.....needed it later...Things were going downhill already Couldn't find my "normal" clamp..this one likes to move a bit..grrr. cranked it down. Set it up to about 1/2" away from the blade. double checked the table, to make sure it is 90 degrees to the blade...on the third try, it was. I also tried to set the point ahead of the saw's points.. Will just have to do....starting making a few cuts.. Couple weren't too bad.....another two were cupped.....didn't go too well. got the stack all resawn down....decided to try a plane to flatten the high spots down.. A running trip up to the bathroom and back, didn't help things along.....About the time I was almost done with a second board..chest was hurting...BIG time... Swept the floor, went upstairs to the pill bottles, and called it a night... After a LONG night..( pills worked!) and the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up being left "ON"....came up with a better plan.... Panels, as they are now called, will sit in frames, like a Frame & Panel style. Frames are to be out of the remaining Black Walnut...sooo Today's trip to the shop. Hauled a new saw to the shop, and the last 1 x 4 x 7' walnut board. Wanted to try the new saw in the Stanley #2246 Mitre Box... Did not go well...turns out, no set on the teeth! Grrr, will send it out, later, to be fixed. Mitre Box was still on the bench, got out the "old" saw.. As I had a bit of work for it to do.. Beyond the saw, there is a decently straight section. there WAS another beyond this nasty section Task was to remove this bad area. Once I got that done, I could then straight-line a few edges, as nothing was straight. Tried to find my metal straightedge...normal luck, found a straight piece of pine, and marked a few lines. I also marked around the worst areas, to get a few good parts. Then I cleared the bandsaw and tried a cut Hmmm, motor runs, belt runs, both pulleys turn,,...but the drive wheel doesn't budge? Got to checking,,,,a set screws was loose..VERY loose. Found the allen wrench set, even found the right one! Cranked that thing down as TIGHT as I could....stepped back, crossed my fingers, and flipped the switch It ran like new! I soon had all the walnut parts trimmed up... Will need the edges jointed, and then a few gooves milled. Might use a Tongue & Groove joint to make the corner joints... These are the Cherry panels. They still need a bit of work. That can wait a day, or three. Not going to push it... May need to use a dust collector on my mitre saw? Made a mess, today.. Swept the floor, back area between the shoulder blades was hurting..time to quit for the day.... Stay tuned....

September 6, 20178 yr Author While waiting on the Cable installer to get things hooked up, tried a little more work in the shop, this morning.. Camera was down....needed the card to reset the wireless routers to MY computer....but.....there was a glue up done in the shop. Long side assembly is now in the clamps.....#2 needs a few tenons made, and then it can be glued up.... Now..Isuppose I should re-assemble the camera, and go and take a few pictures? Maple panels have a raised panel look to them....may keep the raised part to the inside of the box?
September 6, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Ok....cable internet has settled in, seems to be working fine, for now. camera was back in operation... Came up the stairs this morning.....was staringa bat in the eyes....clinging to the door to the shop! Broom and dust pan to try to get the mouse sized critter OUT the door....it flops onto the floor..BAD MOVE....Mrs, Shop Cat took care of the problem. I finally was able to toss the remains outside, into the street. Whew. Ok...back to "normal".... Ok, this is side 1, all glued up. Beveled the Maple panel for side 2, and then a test fit.. Grooves were made with the Stanley 45....needed to make a couple end pieces.. Box needed feet to sit on... More grooves. Made tenons on the ends of the long rails, spread more glue around, fought with a clamp or two.. Gave up on the one "F" style clamp, and used a pipe clamp instead. Swivel pad would not still in place...about went in the trash. Got a start on one of the ends...and called it a day. Cardiac Monitor came in the mail....I suppose I had better shave a couple spots of chest hair off, and get it started up. Maybe after supper...

September 7, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Read through the entire booklet for that "monitor" I think Tri-Care and I will just pass.....I send it back in the morning.. Side #1 is out of the clamps... Raised panel view....or.. Flat? Might go with the raised panel look....as for #2? This is the raised panel view, too. Might keep it this way. Once I get the ends done and into the clamps, I need the change cutters... 3/16" Tongue & Groove cutters. #6 & #11. Corner joint work. Now, IF I can find my bench... A little messy. Design change going on....details later...once I figure them out...stay tuned....
September 7, 20178 yr I prefer the raised panel side out look personally. Those pieces are going to "pop" with the orange shellac applied.
September 7, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Still doing design changes...mainly for a top/lid......Bottom of the case will sit on a small "ledge" I will nail and glue in place.... Sooo, today's episode is about making parts.... Needed 4 of these "stiles" made up. Had a wider plank of walnut, milled the grooves, cut a strip off the plank, and make another one.....Had enough to make these four parts, and... Three out of four rails....I had a longer plank, but it was too narrow. At least to fit in the vise, and have room for the Stanley45 to run along. I notched the ends of the 2" wide plank, and used those to screw the plank to the bench. Had a "good edge" standing up, ran the #4 plane along to get a nice flat edge. Then ploughed the groove. When done, I could cut away the waste. I used the bandsaw to cut the profiles for the feet. I used the mitre saw to trim a few parts I also marked out for the tenons, and use this to make the shoulder cuts....bandsaw did the cheek cuts... Had to cut two panels to length. Planed the edges to make them match each other. Both needed flattened a bit, with a plane. I marked a "stop line" 20mm in from the edge. Hand planes to cut a bevel. Test fit. Did this to make sure it match the existing stiles. Had one a hair too long. Mitre saw to trim. I also checked a cutter.. Mainly that depth stop. Don't need a LONG tongue, just enough to hold the glue. Will cut a 3/16" wide tongue, so I needed to hone the #11 cutter. It is a 3/16" wide plough cutter, that "matches" the tongue's size. ( yes, that IS a gap I have to fill...later. Ledge and bottom will cover most of it)....Another test fit.. Clamps off to the right? Is because this assembly is in the clamps. Waiting on the glue to dry, before the other end gets glued up... Shoulder blades are hurting..may have done a bit too much with the hand planes...maybe? Stay tuned, it get to be "fun" from here on...
September 8, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Well, thought I'd sneak back to the shop....and just switch off the assemblies....one out of the clamps, and one into the clamps...got that done Got to thinking ( uh0oh..) since the grooves were all finished, for now...maybe I could switch out a cutter? Took awhile.....had to even reset the depth stop on the cutter. Raised the plane's stops up, and out of the way. Set the fence to go under the cutter Which is why these have two places for the rods to go. I used a scrap of 3/4" thick Pine to set it for center. This cutter will overhang a bit off the sides. Biggest thing is the skates need to support the cutter, and clear that depth stop.. . On this side, you can see where the cutter overhangs. These can work even on 4/4 stock, so they are made wide for that reason. Once the plane is set up, I start at the far end, and work my way back from there. Sitting in a vise for this shot, only. I used two C clamps to hold the assembly to the side of the bench, that way, I am pushing in-line with the bench, and not across it. So, how did it turn out? It is not all that tall, but it only need to "key" into a matching groove to complete a glue joint. And to think, I was going agaonst the grain to mill this one... Good thing I had sharpened the cutters up, earlier... Maybe tomorrow, I can get the other end milled, and then reset the Stanley 45 again. Stay tuned...
September 8, 20178 yr Author End panel #2.. Showing how it was clamped to the bench, so I could finish the milling.. Pretty, isn't it? Then flip it around.. Ok, these are done...time to "tear down" the plane.... Replace the match cutter with this skinny groove cutter. I only need the main skate. And the fence.. Had to "nibble" on the area where the grooves will go.. AFTER I built a jig to hold things still. Set the depth stop.. This one was needed, had to "lower" it quite a bit. Would rather it be too shallow, than too deep.... First try,,,was a hair shallow, and a hair too close to the edge..test fit? A little gappy on the end....reset the depth a bit. and the fence....once this one was looking good, I could start on the rest.. No, I did not mill the groove with that end piece sitting there. Made yet another jig.... Reused a couple pieces...more of a third hand.. I wanted a square corner jig, to help with the next step... This way, I can spread a bot of glue, slide each piece into place, and have them roughly square and waiting on clamps.. I added a pine "keeper" here on the end. Checked things with a square, and added a diagonal clamp to pull things into square. 6 clamps in use, I can't even work at the bench, right now. Letting this sit awhile...need the figure out a lid/top for it. Stay tuned....
