Hauled a rather plain looking board to the shop.....aprons and a couple stretchers.....Bandsaw to resaw to width.   Had to cut a few to length.   Used a  Circular saw to get the main cuts down...used

How about a "Rachel's Stand-up Desk", ala Underhill?   Resaw of four leg blanks from one board...didn't go too well.    We have ways... Three planes here,  A #5-1/2 set coarse

Thought the first two pieces were wide enough....Board was about 1-1/2"  too narrow....

I'd rather not have a solid wood panel for a bottom panel.  The three pieces are not glued to each other.   Damp basement will mean the two large ones will shrink a bit...when they come out to a drier area.   Didn't have any 1/4" plywood big enough, either.

So, the loose panels can move as they want to....and not bust out a back....

Thanks!

You should be quite proud of that, I know Roy would be! Well done!  huge-thumbs-up-smiley-emoticon.gif

Hinges and a can of BLO have been bought, today.......and even the van's oil got changed ( but NOT with the BLO..)

IF I can get motivated today,  I MIGHT try to install the top shelf and the hinges....unless someone wants to try their hand at the hinges:rolleyes::unsure:

Will try a sample board to test the BLO.....stuff still stinks..

Did I ever say how much I HATE to install hinges?

596682f837aac_hingetools.jpg.27a594dbfb757d62ff03d9bb121cb5f7.jpg

And to do them on a bevel, to boot?   Toys laid out, Chisel was hit 3 times at each mark...depth control...

drill.jpg.28e4be0ba9b342b67bc90698dcd1ecbe.jpg

I used a small phillips screwdriver to mark where to drill the pilot holes at..

596683bc8614c_hingeinstalled.jpg.103c97d804fd60e3190e70991a9a00a0.jpg

Then check the fit....was going to use the cordless drill....but , found a better way to drive the screws..

screwdriver.jpg.dea01bf030bd8fa3b447583d3284dbf7.jpg

Seemed to work just fine....

I did use the electric drill, to drill a few holes..

holes.jpg.277dee1d5506f21b39c5d2a00b0a906a.jpg

3/8" Forstner bit.   Pilot holes by the Yankee drill.   The cordless driver has a clutch on it,  so I don't snap screw heads off.

Need to make some Walnut plugs to cover the screw holes..

The cutter I have in the drill press makes tapered plug.   I then use a screwdriver to "pop" a plug out, add a spot of glue..then hammer in place

plugged.jpg.4e0559314e0563423f2241d1097883f2.jpg

Then wait until the glue is dry, and then a chisel and a block plane to flush them down level.  I also watched how the grain was running on the plugs, to match the Top's grain.

opened.jpg.6470447bdd47ad439329419c24253cc9.jpg

Took a bit, to get the lid to balance long enough for a picture....Then I leaned  it on over..

I hate hinges...

Closed the lid..

To check the "gap"..

gap.jpg.b8827be27c882a9becbb4b86244653f5.jpg

Not too hateful?   ( I still hate hinges..)

Front view, will I get out the brush and BLO?

596686fb1aa87_Frontview.jpg.5505c0607d1e3a4838e7b7da82537274.jpg

Did a test run of one coat on the lid..

BLO.jpg.40c044e76a8b7c8b3cbcf62909caef55.jpg

I kind of like this grain.....has enough colours that it doesn't look like a plastic slab...

Now that the bench is cleared off..

Cherry.jpg.a5826845585589e5fd22d4ed9fc488d3.jpg

I  have to make a small box out of this plank of 7/16" thick Cherry

596687f603e3c_Cherrygrain.jpg.2fbb7457b3db2663c4003cc3eabe6b6e.jpg

Should be enough for all four sides, and a top panel?  But,this will be another Project blog thingy...

Hoping by Monday, I can post the desk in the Gallery as a Project.....?

Stay tuned....

Very Nice!!

I hate hinges too.

Really looking nice Steven,

Cal

Great looking grain. You will now have to get more of this when Mom sees it. Who will use this project?

And the full frontal view.    As for those Walnut plugs..

plugs.jpg.1627f2cf6244793813e47bb0659d6c62.jpg

I think it will do, for now.    Waiting on this smelly stuff to cure/dry and stop stinking, then a coat or two of Gloss Varnish.

Need to start cutting finger/box joints, next Project....thanks for looking in!

That is a really great looking project! I am sure the Pastor will get a great deal of use/enjoyment out of it.

Tried an older camera.....lights were bothering the usual one..

5967a72e70d8e_noflash.JPG.decf979a27fcd0bb095b166b3e27a573.JPG

Hmmm, maybe IF I turn the flash on?

5967a76835a00_flash1.JPG.c756c9aa2faea754c527bb68c55187d3.JPG

Ah, that's more like it!   Looks like what I see.....Other camera like the florescents better than the LED/ Incandescent bulbs...one more?5967a7e7ac5fc_flash2.JPG.5bec230375d71cfe099628fb0efc4763.JPG

The older camera doesn't do fine details as well, like showing the grain

This is a board to be cut up next...

grain.JPG.85b608d78bd12d8f9f98c5bc33d6f10b.JPG

Glass smooth board, mind you.   Will become a Candy Box for a friend of the Pastor.   We'll see how this turns out...

I need to set up a spot to do the varnish at....NOT in the shop.    Will be a brushed on finish,  usually I tend to be a bit sloppy goingfrom the container to the wood....newspaper may yet have a use......

If  I can get the Candy Box into the clamps today....I may  spread out the sports section, and do a brush-off of the desk.....BLO has had a few days to air out...no longer stinks....might be safe to top coat it, now.
