July 6, 20178 yr Author Ok, pictures? Parts is parts. Front, two sides, and the back, sitting on the three piece that get glued up into a lid.. And a top "shelf" for the lid to be hinged into...as for the lid pieces.. I may re-arrange these a bit.....All of these need to be a LOT thinner, but.. This is not the tool for that job. As for the wood itself... Beginning to think I have a batch of Tiger Striped, or Curly Maple....NOT Cherry...one coat of Wich's Brew. May have to change the name of this Project? Tomorrow morning, I go and get these boards planed down to 3/4" thick.. right now, they are all over 1" thick. Hope the van can carry all I want to plane...
July 7, 20178 yr Author Loaded up this morning.. Most of it...Drove past the old Family Plots... And head west two miles..... Bought that planer years ago.....Delta one. At the far right, behind the trash cans, is the first "good" workbench I built..made a royal mess of the fellow's shop floor.. free mulch. Loaded all the planed boards back into the van.. But...I got a bit distracted... That be an 8/4 slab of White Oak. It couldn't fit into the lumber room. Got the boards back home and unloaded...just before a huge thunderstorm rolled through... All the marks I had on the boards? Gone with the shavings....now I get to sort through the mess again. Maybe later, I can get some shop time in my own shop....stay tuned. BTW: have been informed that I have both a Curly Maple AND some Flame Cherry in this stash..along with some Poplar...might make finishing a challenge?
July 7, 20178 yr Author Parts have been sorted out, ones I need are in the shop. Planed the two sides so they match each other along their edges. Jointed a few more edges, as I wanted to get the lid glued up.. Made a mess...been doing that a lot, today.... Needed cauls, front and back, this time around. Will let this sit a while....laid out a few other parts.. Both sides, the top shelf, and a back. High spot in the false top needs trimmed down. And a front. Need to get this cut to length ( might use that saw back there?) and do a few dovetails. Then I can plane the top edge to match the angle of the sides....I hope. Letting the lid sit awhile.....while I cool down, and rest up. Plumb tuckered out, for some reason.....working way too hard for a Friday? Stay tuned
July 8, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Dovetails are done for two corners ( see the Dovetail thread) which leaves the other side's to be done.. Left side has the dovetails, need to work on the right side, next... Later, I need to change the cutters on this old plane.. I think I am done with the beading bit, for now....need the #12 straight cutter installed, as I need some 1/4" grooves cut. Seems Igor has returned! Looks like he rode his broom in....too. Lunchtime! Maybe refresh a couple chisels? Oil stone and strop. Had one that needed a little extra work done.. Yes, that is MY Mountain Dew. Glue bottle is almost empty...need to go "shopping" I guess. Some of the usual suspects? Green Cap was applied to the strop. White thing is a candle, works nicely when rubbed on the saw blade. Lew's Mallet trying to Photobomb? Stay tuned, side #3 is next...
July 9, 20178 yr Author ok,try again..Corners are all done...#4 came out nicely, seeings how it was the last corner.. #3 corner...not so nice.. Dry fit to check for square.. One corner, then.. The other. Looks good from my house...got out an old plane, and the box that goes with it Needed to change out cutters.. Needed to remove the #23 Bead cutter, and install a #12 straight cutter.. Meant I also had to reset the sliding skate, and the fence.....1/4" wide groove, 1/4" from the fence...then close the lid .. And put the box away. Bench was cleaned off so I can start to groove the parts..later. BTW...THIS is what I have to go through, each time I go to the shop... "Down, down,down...in Dungeon Town" ( sounds better than Goblin Town?) Stay tuned...

July 9, 20178 yr Author Grooves have been milled...twice. Was having an issue with the skates on the Stanley #45,,,they weren't closing all the way up....had to change to a slightly wider cutter... As the skates would get into a bind about halfway down the line....going to be one of THEM kind of days... Cut a plank of Poplar to length, twice. Length was right, just needed to square the ends...among other things.. Boards were also thicker along one edge than the other ( riff sawn?) So I needed to plane the thick parts down to fit IN the grooves... There is one problem with thin shavings, when you also have a fan in the shop.. They blow EVERYWHERE. Speaking of everywhere....I have dried glue on about every finger and thumb... 5 pipe clamps, couple of other clamps. 2 visegrips to keep the pipe clamps from getting loose. Try doing all this with just two hands... Discovered I needed that fifth pipe clamp right between these two at the back...and a caul/pad...really needed two pads, not enough hands on deck today. Poplar bottom panels need a filler strip between them Both to fill the gap, and support the middle. Long afternoon...time to rest the knee a while..stay tuned
July 10, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Some dummy snuck back inti the shop, last night.....and started working on the lid.. Tried out a new board for the top shelf, as the other one wasn't a good match to the lid. The bevel gauge and the two little pieces of wood? Well, after a visit to Roy Underhill's site, I figured out how to make the joint between the top and the lid...as this didn't quite get it.. So, I made a full sized template, used the bevel gauge to set the angles, and made a guide... Ok, that should work. I needed to trim the ends to length and square....couldn't find my saw fence, oh well. we have ways.. Measure from the cut line to where the outside of the saw's shoe ends, clamp a straightedge. Maintain pressure against the fence as you push that vintage saw along.. Yes, Vintage Saw. Now, about those little pieces of pine? I use them to set the bevel on the saw. Lay out for the fence, again.. Then, same as before, make the cut.. Will need to plane the edges a bit..saw marks, you know. Test fit? Looks good from my house. This is before all them saw cuts....clamps are now put away. I have a few boards to hand plane... Skinny one is a book rest, goes out on the end of the lid, to keep a book from sliding off onto the floor. Maybe Tuesday, I might try to get something done? Stay tuned

July 11, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Didn't want to, tried to resist.....but..I got bored last night. All the edges have been planed, and jointed.. That little strip of shaving was made by that old plane.. Bevels were cleaned up. The ends were cleaned up with a plane... So was the "flat work" That electric planer had left a line from a nick in a knife...easy enough to remove... IF you have the tools. Lid was flattened, then a "Book Rest" was added.. Most of this work was done without the camera...I WAS only going to check on the shop, wasn't intending to do any actual work.... Murphy being Murphy.....I had to go back to the shop, to double check where the rest was glued on at....hoping it wasn't to the underside of the lid...checked the direction of the bevel...good, got it glued in the right spot, despite Murphy's Law..on a Monday. Twas a Road Trip today....2 Egg Rools while driving home does NOT equate to a Lunch....debating between the Kitchen, or the Shop....we'll see...
July 11, 20178 yr Author I just can't resist.....something about the place, just draws me in... Stay tuned for an Up-date......been back down there again.. Some dummy was almost done working away, sweat dripping on everything. (in a basement?) THEN he remembered,,,to turn on the fan..grrrrrr Ankle deep in shavings...at least until the fan was turned on.... Need to chill out for a little bit, before I get some photos and words posted.....
July 12, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Fans...got to have them RUNNING... Clamps came off the lid, needed to clean up the glue joint.. Looked nice, but was a tad too narrow.. Got out a wider plane... Now that a bit better. This is a Stanley, Made in England No.4c, Type 20... Will just have to do..for now. Corners were rounded with the beltsander. I set the lid aside for a bit..Have a gap to fill.. I cut out a spot, to drop in a filler strip. It is thicker than the other two pieces, Cut a slice out on the bandsaw, test fit showed it was a tad too wide...we have ways The Millers Falls No.11, junior Jack. Once the test fits were good...a spot of glue and a few nails.. Need to hang this case in the vise...for the next hour or two... Did this eight times. Each corner needed a plane to level these.. Same No.4c. Candle wax all over the sole...helps out, too. That square hole? Will cobble some small stock, and glue a stick in there... Something like this one? Smaller ends were a bit easier to do.. Once all of these were nice and smoothed out, time for the stand to be worked over... A bit high in the center? Stand is clamped into the vise. Scrub jack to remove most of the high spot, mainly where the case will sit. Got this end looking level, turn things around.. And check the left side....set the case aside, again, and go to work on the high points again. Had a knot holding things up....finally was able to install one screw at each end of the filler strip, and set the desk aside.. Set the lid and top shelf in place, for a dry fit. waiting on Friday to get a few hinges, and something to apply as a finish...getting close to the end.. Plain BLO? Amber Shellac ( Bullseye brand)? Gloss Poly topcoats....stay tuned
July 12, 20178 yr I have a question and I'm not trying to be a wise a$$. Why did you make the bottom like you did? I mean why did you add the center piece instead of making the bottom a full 3 piece glue-up?
July 12, 20178 yr Author Thought the first two pieces were wide enough....Board was about 1-1/2" too narrow.... I'd rather not have a solid wood panel for a bottom panel. The three pieces are not glued to each other. Damp basement will mean the two large ones will shrink a bit...when they come out to a drier area. Didn't have any 1/4" plywood big enough, either. So, the loose panels can move as they want to....and not bust out a back....
July 12, 20178 yr Dovetails came out beautiful and give such character this style of furniture. Well done. Very fitting use of this "plain 'ole maple!" I hate to see this one come to an end...really enjoyed seeing the evolution of this piece...of course you do have those pieces of walnut just laying around...
