Found it! Here. https://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/MS-IROUND.XX/Rounding_Planes_(Rounders)__by_Ray_Iles

I may just make one, I got a Krenov style Hock blade on standby for a wood plane, but I may just use it to make one of these. I am so happy!

So these guys call them rounding planes, ok.

I may be going to no shoulders Stick, they are attractive. I'll be building my first few chairs by the book though for now, till I get comfortable with the process. Then like I have in the past, I'll start spreading my wings and getting creative and adding my own flare. I envision in the future using many of the design elements from the sculpted rockers melting together with the shaker chair design, I can see it happening, I just need to understand these chairs first.

Thanks for all your help.

that they are...

another connection is to have a locking tapered tenon w/ a fitted shoulder...

the fitted shoulder prevent excessive draw up and provides for solid joinery..

if one or two of the stretchers draws up a bit too far it pulls the layup out of square and then you have to fuss w/ the chair to get it to set/sit right...

w/ tapers make sure the mortise matches the tenon and all of the sockets are near identical depths...

once you get this to be 2nd nature life gets easier for you and your project...

The thing about the taper tenons Stick, is they may be too tight. The shaker chairs because of the trapezoidal seat shape depend on loose tenons, thus the reason for the shoulders to hide some of the minute slop. Made by hand, those tenons could never be a perfect fit, if they were the chair would never go together. Taper tenons are great on Windsor chairs because of the way the Windsors are designed, but the shouldered tenons with a little slop is needed with the post and rung trapezoid shaped chairs by the shaker. It's a built in flaw that museum curators noticed by repairing originals. It's quite an interesting concept, a built in flaw to facilitate ease in assembly, and when the chair parts are forced in at angles they don't like, the chair is tight and sturdy.

One of the drawbacks of taper tenons is the posts tend to split more often than a shouldered tenon would. But as you and I both agree, the taper sure looks sweet and clean.

table is mine too as is the rest of the furniture... (see the yesteryear projects)

Thought of that and have done it. I actually have taken the shoulders down to less than a 16th and soften the edges by sanding at the lathe.

Nice work Stick.

No, you mentioned a spoke shave for the tenons, you can cut shouldered tenons with a spoke shave.

never tried a curved spoke shave perpendicular to the long grain (unless I was making a form of a ball end) only w/ the grain nor have I tried to cut a shouldered tenon w/ one but have cut a lot of tapers using them... ...

For the sake of this discussion Stick, shouldered round tenons. I got it figured out though, thanks for all your help!
