That WIP: Drawer building

Featured Replies

Next three drawers should be a little easier...they are built using a 1x6 plank.    Second drawer is out of the clamps, sanded, and the knobs installed.....not much will happen today, being this is a Monday....

This is basically how the Dungeon Shop rolls nowadays.....no room for the biggie power tools.    Dovetails...I just am practizing..

Ok, dragged the drawer out to add a pair of handles... But it still had a problem with the fit on the sides... Millers Falls No. 900 ( Stanley #4 size)  as there was a high spot or

Pictures or it didn't happen, right?

Soooo.two drawers.JPG

At least they do open without any binding..

The way the bench looks on a Monday morning

As I don't like to work on Mondays.....so, this 1x6 will just have to wait..

lumber stash.JPG

Been nibbling away at that plywood panel....might have enough left for two more drawers..

The shop kept calling me.....promised it wouldn't act up......Finally gave in...was just going to do the crosscuts...and go back to the naps..

crosscuts.JPG

So much for that nice, clean bench...

well, the next thing I know, I'm cutting dovetails.....since this is a 1x6, meant there were fewer to cut/chop/cuss... just when I thought I was done...

Blonde Curls.JPG

Something with a bunch of Blonde Curls was calling my name......and then a dado was made....then the back board was cut to size....then after the second try, a bottom made of plywood was ready

clamped up.JPG

Grabbed the clamps and glue bottle, and put this together.    3 hours and 15 minutes of shop time done.

5 dovetails.JPG

Helps when there is as many of these to do......Drawer #3 is awaiting the glue to dry .....I think I may need another nap...

So much for Monday's off   :)

This Monday was good to you, I would not try to push it too much though.

Drawer #3 is out of the clamps, and two knobs installed.....Had to plane a bit off the top  edge of the drawer front, was a bit too tight.

Until there is a couple more planks brought to the shop, will be taking a short break from drawer building.

BTW: that 1x6 had a "Made in Sweden"  sticker on it.......Home Depot gets lumber from Sweden?  No wonder it costs so much....

I have a learning question.  The width of the pins and the the angle of the dove tails.

Any standards to go by or does it not matter?

The ones pictured look plenty strong.

I am just wondering about spacing and angles and such.

I tend to make pine ones a little bigger.

Spacing is by MK 1 Eyeball, and is tied to the width of the chisels I have.

I have an old 1/2" router bit, that used to do dovetails for me.   Not sure what degree it used.   Might be a 14* one?

Roy Underhill usually uses a 1:6 angle for his.    Set up with a square, where one spot on the bevel gauge hits the 1" mark, and the other hits the 6" mark.

Myself?   I'll lay the old router bit on the end grain of the board, and mark a line along the cutting edge of the bit,  that becomes the angle I set my bevel gauge to.

Another thing on spacing by eyeball....I start towards the center from each direction, and adjust the center one to fit in.

Your methods are great. Simple and effective. No need to overwork that single cell with complicated formulas.;)

Well, a run to Menards was done this morning.    two 1 x 6 x 8' pine boards, a 1/4" by 2' x 8' plywood panel, and a small bottle of glue......$23.25 Yikes!   Then had to take the Boss to lunch...ouch.

Debating on actually working IN the shop today.     IF I go down the steps......work will get done. IF I sit here at the computer,.....my "foundation" will get numb:o.....decisions, decisions...

If I take the camera to the shop, to get a picture of the latest drawer.....I might as well stay down there and do #4......Hmmmm, maybe after Chili & Rice for supper?

Took the camera to the shop....

three drawers.JPG

And moved this over out of the way.    A better view of the drawers?

opened up.JPG

getting there...

all this moving around, one of the nailed on foot pads came off,   yep, shoe found it....

Crosscut the next plank,  sides were jointed together..

sides jointed.JPG

But there was a problem with the ends.   Not only not square, but a little curve in there...got out an older jig..

shooting board.JPG

Nothing real fancy, called a Shooting Board.   I can use either the #5-1/2 or the #6c to square an edge.   First I need to clamp the bad end in place..

clamped jig.JPG

Then run the plane by until things are square up..

squared cut.JPG

Something like this.    I then did all the usual stuff, after resawing the front and sides to the correct height.    Got the dovetails done..

dovetailed.JPG

ran the Stanley 45 around for the grooves and dados.    Got the glue bottle out ( a NEW bottle!) and a bunch of clamps..

clamped square.JPG

The diagonal one is to pull the box into square.   Screws were added to hold the back in place better, including a few through the bottom and into the back.

Will let this sit a long time....I am plumb tuckered out.   And...not even a beer in the house....maybe I can get the handles on this one...tomorrow?

That looks really nice. I hope just the shoe found the foot pad and the shoe AND your foot

Looking great so far.

For the assembly of the drawers in the case as they now sit they appear to not be centered in the opening.

Are you going to center them?

Ok, let's stop here a moment...

Design Parameters:

Low Budget ( as in almost NO budget)

Pine ( someone else want to use "Better' wood, have fun)

Shop Storage Only(  never meant for "Upstairs" use. )

Skill saver, as I'm trying to keep what little skills I have in working order

Was never meant to be "Fine Furniture" worthy.   just a place to toss  boxed up items from the shop.  This will be abused, beat up, dragged around.  It resides in a basement.

If you want, you can take notes on how I build things, try them to see how you like it, and use it if you do.

Drawer #4 now has it's knobs installed.    First coat of the Infamous Witch's Brew is on the top, the front, and one side of the project.   Letting the mess dry for the day.  Maybe, I might get back down there tomorrow, and add more of the "finish" as needed.   Even the camera is taking the day off, today.

Did I mention I hate the smell of BLO in the morning?

Did I mention I hate the smell of BLO in the morning?

Into every life a little rain must fall. Or.. you can't make an omelet without breaking the eggs.

Eagerly awaiting the pictures. Wash your hands first, though. Don't know what that witches brew will do to that new camera.;)

This is a test, only a test..

hiduing in the corner.JPG

The side by the #45 box hasn't been coated,,,yet.

drawers.JPG

This side has been coated.   waiting on the stuff to dry...

I would say that you passed the test with flying colors and then some. Superlative Job!

Nice job Steve. That should make an extra nice shop storage cabinet. Fun to follow along.
