What?...and all this time I've been thinking you had used magic wood or special alien powers to create a vertical chess set Just shows Gator's southern hospitality and he's a guy that's really "on the level"
December 22, 20169 yr Author I have posted better pics in the Gallery. As I stated earlier the design of the men is from Larry Jenkins who provided me with measured drawings. If anyone would like copies I can scan them into a file and email to you.
December 23, 20169 yr I can't stay up with you if you don't slow down. I don't have a higher gear. What did you do, find a bottle of Had-a Call at an antique store somewhere?? As I was bringing up your chess board glue up I turned to look where my board is stored, under the china cabinet, for I thought your finished product was the board we bought in Juarez, Mexico about 53 or 54 years ago. It is onyx and is exactly the color of yours...well kinda close So you have given me the urge to carve the players. I never would put the board out all set up cause the players are onyx also and I've worried they would break. That could be a year long carving job or something. I might have to come over to your place and relieve you of your wood to slow you down. A different question, Is there any hardwood saw mills around your area. I'm getting low!!
December 24, 20169 yr Author I get most of my flat stock at several mills. I just call to see if they have what I want. Unfortunately these around here do nothing greater than 5/4 so I have to go to the wood supplier for the 2x for the chess men. Bring it on by when you travel this way and you could show some of that scrolling you do.
December 24, 20169 yr 545 miles to your house. I usually drive so fast my paint on the car slides off somewhere along the road so I'm sure the scrollsawed stuff would be charcoal before I got in to Vicksburg. There are a few sawmills in east Tx but thats half way to your house. I don't ever remember buying any foreign exotic wood since I started buying hardwood. It was always a struggle to cough up enough for the local stuff.

December 24, 20169 yr Author Depends on which you go to, most are kiln dried. I have not been to a mill in 5-6 years because since I switched mostly to turning I get the free type local woods. I usually buy 250 to 300 bf at one time just so I do not have to go soon. The last load from Natchez was $125. Edited December 24, 20169 yr by Gerald
