worked on the chess board today. Cut the alternating strips and glued up the board.

Getting the ends to level was a problem thus many clamps to get them flat.

  • Here are the latest pieces. The rooks still need cuts on top and the knight needs sanding. That knight took the longest of any one piece. Much rather it had all been turned.

  • Finished the royalty today. Now on to the case. sorry about the side pic coukld not adjust in iphone.

  • Been a good week so far. Got the knights and rooks done.

Great start Gerald...I like the looks already of the pieces. Bishop contrast is fantastic. What is your plan for finish on the pieces? Danish Oil? Tung Oil?

Tha is a good start. I will be waiting to see how the rest of the project goes

Nice Gerald.  I will have to forward this to my brother.  He is a chess player.

LOOKING GOOD!!!

Thinking lacquer. Not going to be tung oil . I think the one this is copied from used a blend, but I have gotten into lacquer sprayed with airbrush for small stuff and it works well.

That'll will look good...not too much sheen but will make those pieces pop...looking forward to seeing this PIP

Nice board! My first one warped into a shallow bowl!

Looking forward to seeing all the turned pieces!

I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project, looks like you have a great start.

Went to a friends farm today and got this load of cherry.IMG_0919.JPG

Very nice!

Board looks great Gerald as do your bishops...Looking forward to seeing K&Q, knights and rooks. Good friend to score that cherry...splits nice, smells good, burns great and hot plus smelling the smoke coming out of a chimney...sure you've already got a project or two in mind for these pieces.

Looking good.   What is the dark wood on the board?

Looks GREAT, keep us posted:)
