December 10, 20169 yr Very good idea for the weights. Most drill holes and add BBs for the weight. I think your method is cleaner and easier. Nice!
December 10, 20169 yr Fabulous job, Gerald. The pieces are really nicely done and that board is just awesome. Can't wait to see the finished box.
December 10, 20169 yr Author Thanks for the comments . The sled is a Wood plan from December 2000. Doing the epoxy over the weights was a little messy, but the hardest part is sanding them back flat. I did not want to use a power sander so I could keep the bottom perpendicular, so I did it by hand with the paper on the tablesaw. Worked well except the epoxy, even after 24 hours would pill on the paper.

I use a 2 part liquid from West Systems and it's hard enough to sand well after an hour. Don't care for the jell stuff. But, it's probably easier to control on smaller items. I usually measure by volume so that could be the answer.
December 13, 20169 yr I made a chess set and box in high school shop class using Oak and Walnut. I know first hand that there are a lot of hours involved in this project. I don't play much chess but have held onto that set for nearly 30 years for just that reason. My set is nowhere near as nice as what you are producing. Mine was done with an old Craftsman pipe frame lathe and duplicator when I knew everything and very little, all at the same time! I believe that I was a Sophomore at the time! My son looked mine over a few years back and keeps it in his room now. He thinks that it is cool! I should add that at that time, I was in way over my head on this project. Somehow, I convinced that teacher to let me try! Very nice work! Thanks for sharing this one with us. Edited December 13, 20169 yr by Bundoman
December 14, 20169 yr Author Popular Post Got the box ready for finish today. As usual with boxes had to adjust the board to fit the recess and cut finger slot to lift board. Tomorrow will make the grid for the box to store playing pieces.
December 17, 20169 yr Author All is done except felt on bottom of the men. Better pics later in gallery.
December 17, 20169 yr Outstanding work Gerald. Turning several items to match is not easily done, impressive! Steve
December 18, 20169 yr Very well done. The turnings, the board, color choices and finish are all beautifully done. Kudos, that is a lot of work.
December 18, 20169 yr Author Thanks for all the comments. Doing the felt on the bottoms today and will do better pics next week for the gallery.
