After making the chicken bowls I wanted to add an accent ring to a bowl and not waste my little supply of black walnut so I figured I'd just use my miter gauge to cut some segments and use that to make a circle. However they didnt' fit very well so I glued up 4 segments and hand sanding to get them flat  then glued them into a circle... not ideal.

Recently I have taken an interest in building Shaker furnishings, I have always loved it, but I am ready to build it.

I am a beginner with turning and have just recently figured out how to use a bowl gouge. I sharpened all my gouges on a Tormek T8 as I can't hand sharpen worth a hoot.   My chickens needed a better way to offer them crushed oyster shell, granite grit and crushed egg shell. As part of my Chicken steps that I built I provided 3 holes in an board to fit 3 bowls in.   I made the bowls from red oak boards that I had milled from a big log. I used a hole saw to cut out some of the center and used the biggest center cutout as a doubler for the bottom once the chickens did some field testing and demonstrated that the bowls were not secure. I used Titebond III glue and Tried & True Varnish oil to finish them.   Nothing fancy but good fun to make when you don't have green chunks of wood to make a bowl.   JT

For someone with few tools. I had some bamboo left from a job and the light and dark is great to carve all areas as the lines is a good guide to go by so it will turn out like a professional might have did the work.

This is the same chest featured here in this album, but a better picture I believe, with a few craft items I made, the two vases and the wood platter dish, with my wife's pottery she made sitting atop.

Part II - The Cedar Cupboard, the story of recrafting a cedar cupboard to jam slide into a tight spot, has a prequel.  Why the cabinet was wanted. The text to Part I - The Mouse is at the bottom of Part II. Renovation images beginning after the radiator R/R have been found.    The c.1926 flooring is loose, shrunken, cupped, wide gaps filled with lint, bits of cat claws, dust. The radiator was removed, mouse holes filled, that area refinished, the radiator replaced, heat restored. The rest of the floor, blecch ! So the bedroom was relocated and work began.       Each loose board, the ends and usually most of the length, were drilled, counterbored, screwed. The gaps vacuumed then puttied. I experimented with several wood fillers, liking Elmer's Probond Wood Filler best.  My 3" putty blade fit the container; its consistency was tops; easy cleanup. All the seams sanded with a 5" 8-hole orbital, the boards also hit.   Then the roof leak patched, ceiling repaired, baseboard smoother, and everything got multiple coats. While working I realized how much cold air was streaming into the room from the attic - down the lathe bay and under the baseboard. So those seams were stuffed with cement. Cement is my go-to; sometimes I add a pinch of dirt to get the color right.         Broken window + street light = cover it for now. Nice 1/2" birch plywood. Lowes cut me a break on it - edge fork split.         The hall for a quickie; I want to go back and do it right, though. Maybe in 2042 . . .        Hope you enjoyed the tour!  - jim

I am asking about having an urn made for my son, Nicholas, an young combat infantry vet. He served with honor and distinction with the 1/32IN, 3rd BCT, 10thMD in Afstan. He fought the good fight but finally lost his battle to PTS and deep depression. My son died by suicide on the afternoon of June 11, 2021.   He was the father of two young sons.   We'll be bringing Nick to Arlington when they can schedule his burial, most likely 2-4 months from now. One of my friends at lumberjocks suggested I contact this group to ask about an urn for Nick.

Walnut Rocker Side

Well it has been a crazy project building a shop and actually starting to set it up so I can make things. There is an ever-increasing list of to-do’s but I am at a point where it is workable. I started with the hard problems… Actually building a shop, but this gave me the opportunity to make sure that power, heating/cooling etc… were all in place. Now I am on to the little things like shop layout, dust collection, tooling, organization, jigs, and storage solutions interspersed with actually making things for around the house.   I am sure there will be many more updates as things get whipped into shape around here

I've always struggled with cutting small parts to length, even when I had my radial arm saw, as it always seemed like overkill. I've been using a couple of Japanese pull saws for a while, really like them, and decided to make a bench hook for cutting small pieces. All parts are from the scrap bin - offcuts of luan plywood, a piece of cherry for the clamp block and a piece of thicker edge banding for the fence.   First photo is the original one that I built - worked OK, but it occurred to me afterwards that the fence would be better behind the sawing direction.   The original unit in use, cutting the MDF strips for the grid in my bit storage cabinet - stop clamped at left to give consistent length.   The new (improved) version with the fence at the front so that the saw pulls the material into the fence.  Another change was to have the fence overhang the clearance groove so that it could be used to guide the saw and help with square cuts. I used the end of the fence in the original version for this, but I think having the fence at the rear is going to make this easier too.   Another view showing the clamping block on the bottom so that it can be clamped in the vise - so, not really a saw hook but.............   Having the ability to clamp a stop block on the end turned out to be very handy, so I made this one a little longer to give me a little more room.   Haven't used the new one yet, but think it's going to work a little better with the pull saws because of the front fence location. They're the perfect size for cutting small strips, dowels, etc. to length, can see them getting a lot of use cutting my edge banding to length.

I just found this photo that I taken in Stockholm, and I'm thinking about carving /gilding this as my next project. There is a lot of undercutting, which will be interesting. Now, to scale this to a reasonable size!

A lot of people on different forums talk bad about the Ringmaster and how it only makes straight sided, cone shaped bowls from one board. Complex, compound curves can be achieved using multiple boards but that is something I haven't really gotten into. Instead, I like to explore "What would happen if....?".

Little did I know that the world would be forever changed a month into my training with the United States Army. At the time of my first enlistment I. The Army I chose to enter service as a 52D, a generator mechanic, and I thought even after the towers had fallen that even if there was a conflict, I would be far from front lines. Fast forward a brief period of time and not only were we fighting in Afghanistan, but war was looming with Iraq as well, and by now I didn’t seem to feel as certain as before that this would end anytime soon. within a matter of months after National news headlines had mentioned the possibility of war with Iraq, I was attached to the 1st Marine Corp Division, and an infantry company at that before being sent to Kuwait as we awaited orders to enter the country, and before long, there we sat in Baghdad. I learned two things during the invasion of Iraq, first is don’t ever underestimate the American Military’s might, and second was no matter your job, when bullets are flying, every man is an infantry man. As my unit began to prepare for redeployment back to the United States I found myself at a crossroads with my time remaining in boots quickly coming to an end if I didn’t reenlist.   Shortly upon returning home from that deployment to Iraq, I made up my mind that I no longer wanted to be a mechanic, and therefor I re-enlisted with the option to change my career field. I volunteered for needs of the Army and due to low numbers of enlistments at the time, I was reclassify as an NBC guy. I thought man, I’ll never see the front lines again, finally a safe position to be in. However, Uncle Sam was short of NBC guys in many infantry companies at FT Campbell. Knowing that my family would be much closer to home, and also coming to the realization that regardless of my job I would be deployed again, I volunteered to go to FT Campbell where I would spend the remainder of my military career until I was released from service. Of all the decisions I had made while serving, this was the best thing I ever decided to do.   I was assigned to 4 BCT, 2-506th infantry, which had just been stood back up at FT Campbell, shortly before I had arrived. After being processed into my unit I was handed off to the 1SG where I immediately began training per his orders, as there was no man worth having in his infantry company if the man could not perform the duties of an infantryman should it ever be needed. For these lessons I am very grateful, as it would later serve me well yet again in Baghdad. After two months of training, I was headed back to Iraq, with an infantry company none the less, but I felt safe, confident, well protected, and more importantly surrounded by my military family.   Fast forward through the deployment, with three IED’s being struck and two months remaining before we were to go back home. We were told to cordon off a block and go house to house, looking for a High Value Target. While each squad from my platoon struck off in different directions, I along with the radio man an interpreter and one gunner stayed with the company CO. In a matter of a few minutes of the squads moving, we began to take small arms fire from rooftops. We began to scan rooftops trying to ID targets but as we were doing this, a man came from around the corner of the building and started firing in our direction. The first burst of fire went wild and was nowhere close to the vehicle or my squad, but before we could react, again he came out from the corner of the building and opened fire. This time rounds walked down the street and up onto our vehicle. The rounds upon impact split into fragments which hit the company commander and our RTO. At this time the gunner in our lead vehicle realized where the threat was and began to orient in his direction, but before he had completely moved into a position to engage the target the man came from behind the building and fired a third burst. This time the interpreter and myself were wounded when rounds fragmented and ricocheted down the street. We were finally able to eliminate the threat and moved out to receive aid.   I would later be awarded a Purple Heart for injuries related to this incident, however, unfortunately it was an IED that truly injured me during this deployment. After returning to FT Campbell I began to see a spine specialist due to lower back and hip pain that I was never able to recover from, and that seemed to continue to worsen. I would ultimately deploy again with the same company this time to Afghanistan, but was assigned to the TOC and radio until my injuries either improved or until they knew what the surgeon would be able to do for me when I returned home.   Sadly, after returning home from my third deployment, the decision was made that my injuries would require spinal surgery to correct, and at that time my military career would go in a different direction. I would be medically discharged before having my spinal surgery at a later date to correct the ruptured discs in my lower back and both hips were replaced as well.   At this time I am retired and spend my days with my family (my wife Meaghan, sons Austin and Wyatt, daughter Elizabeth), my service dog (Crockett), and I spend a lot of time when possible or feasible outside fishing or at my fly tying bench working on any number of patterns that I might find as being useful at fooling any uneducated trout.   Kind Regards, Mike Hulsey   Our Christmas Family Images   Rules Sorry, only Residents of the US and Canada may participate. I'm a beginner to segmented bowls.  I've had a Ringmaster for several years and have made many, many bowls using the Ringmaster but I don't think they are technically classified as segmented.  Even though some can be made using "pie" looking pieces and even dividers between the "pie" sections then rings cut on the Ringmaster and they have that segmented look but I don't think many people classify them as segmented in the strictest sense of the term.  I bought several books and decided to try segmenting.  The first one I bought was this one by Don Jovag.  As far as I'm concerned, he does a great job explaining things and makes things easy to understand and has some projects outlined step by step that I think most people could follow.  He has a 10" salad bowl as a project that was my first attempt at a true segmented bowl.  I made mine out of Walnut and maple and I think it came out OK, I know I really enjoyed making it.  After I was finished with that one and while the "steps" were still fresh in my mind I made another using the same pattern but changing up the feature ring with one he has in the back of the book.  I changed it up a little but that general look is still there.  It's made of Brazilian Rosewood and Maple, and is my 2nd segmented bowl.  I started segmenting 2 months ago and to this point I have made 10 bowls and started #11 a couple of days ago.  I heartily recommend his book to anyone who wants to give segmenting a whirl.  He uses a sled that he is comfortable with while I used the "wedgie sled" by Jerry Bennett.  It works, things fit, nuff said.

I am ashamed to say, I have never heard of this man, my gosh, true heroism.   On Oct 17, 2005 SFC Alwyn C. Cashe was mortally wounded, willfully allowing himself to burn to death in a heroic attempt to save 6 of his brothers in arms trapped inside of a burning Bradley. SFC Cashe, covered in fuel, rushed to the vehicle, igniting himself. He heroically struggled to lower the ramp, all the while on fire himself. Upon the lowering of the ramp, SFC Cashe, still on fire, entered the vehicle 3 times removing his trapped and dazed brothers. SFC Cashe died on November 8, 2005 and was awarded the Silver Star for Valor (post) on Nov 11, 2005. Please, honor SFC Cashe as he honored all of us with his selfless ultimate sacrifice. Ran across this Canadian gov article about the hazards of wood dust exposure.  It's very straight forward in the assessment of the hazards. That said, it seems to lean to the side of gloom and doom.  I've always paid more attention to keeping my fingers attached to my hands.
