Walked down to the garden this morning and I see the garlic is starting to poke through the leaf mulch. I guess spring can't be too far away. Don't forget to turn your clocks forward this Saturday night or you will be late to Sunday School! Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald took some time to rearrange his turning area. No easy feat and he will probably looking for where he put stuff for some time to come! Our members all sympathized with the amount of work required to do this. You can see their comments in Gerald's post- @Masonsailor Took a break from his media room redo and played on the lathe. Paul decided to turn a Top and it's a beauty. Our turners had lots of questions and comments about how the hardware and his processes. Check out Paul's post, here- A couple of weeks ago @Bob Hodge was asking about wet sanding techniques and products. Well, Bob made the leap and he tells us about his results. We appreciate Bob's follow-up and giving us his findings- @RustyFN Tried his hand at segmented turning. He said it was his first time at this but judging from the results, I have to wonder . As you might expect, the kudos were flying for this beauty! Rusty also gave us an insight into some of his processes for cutting the segments- In one of our other forums, Rusty shared his lumber score. You know some guys can fall in "it" and come out smelling like a rose. That's our Rusty!! Just look at what he picked up! He already has it broken down into turning blanks! A little more on his good luck here- @AndrewB is working on another pepper grinder. He is turning this one from Bhilwara. It is a beautiful wood and should look awesome on the table! I used LED in-line skate wheels and the material seems like it won't mar the turnings and yet is firm enough to keep the turning in place. Right now I am finishing up the Sketchup drawings that I used as plans. Probably not necessary but I need the Sketchup practice. A short video of the first test run. Here it is December already. Time sure goes fast when you are quarantined- NOT!!! Christmas is fast approaching and we are determined to make our adopted family's Christmas one to remember. We are 60% towards our goal. If you haven't entered the raffle/donation yet, please don't wait! If you have already made your donation, we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier's been busy this past week turning a couple of gorgeous ornaments. Around here, Ron is considered the king of using scraps to create works of art. The first one is a hybrid acrylic and wood beauty- Ron explains a little about how this one came about- Ron turned this little gem as well- @AndrewB has been making purple heart bowls- He tells us a little about some of the problems he encountered that are common with purple heart. Andrew's lathe stand (seen in the previous post) got a rebuild and upgrade. Nicely done, Andrew! In his post, he provides lots of picture to see how it was made- Last week's "Wednesday's..." topic on the Nova Pro-Tek chuck generated lots of comments and questions about chucks. This picks up at that point- What’s Coming Up- We have only a few lady turners here in our little community. It is a little long and unscripted but quite interesting- For The Newbies- When selecting turning tools for bowls, we mostly think of gouges. Another must have tool is the scraper. When properly used, scrapers can produce super results Expand Your Horizons- It's a well know fact around here that I hate sanding. I'm not good at it. Maybe if I were better at it, I wouldn't hate it so much. Be that as it may, I've always used "sandpaper", in some form, for sanding. It seems recently more and more turners are using paste products to achieve that final finish. Mike Peace recently did comparisons of the finish from several of these product. It was also an excuse to show off his new digital microscope! Use of these paste sanding products can affect your choice of final finishes. Everything Else- Rick Turns listing of the Youtube woodturning videos from last week- I know it's hard to believe but I actually did some turning this week. Back in September, I received a request for a large salad bowl and two smaller serving bowls. The large salad bowl was completed and then our world, here, turned upside down. Anyway, I finished up the smaller bowls to complete the set. These are local cherry that the tree guys dropped off back in the summer, Finished with beeswax and mineral oil. I must learn to wipe my dusty finger prints off of the turnings before taking the pictures. I didn't notice them until I saw them on the PC monitor. Safe turning and stay well

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker turned a couple of gorgeous pieces. I particularly enjoyed this one- Steve discussed what he did in his post and shows us several views of each piece- @Gerald found a neat lamp that will work well for turners Gerald supplied the link, for the lamp, in his post. Check out the background of Gerald's images for his really great tool setup- I've never met Carl Jacobson but I do enjoy his videos and post some of them in the "Wednesday's..." turners forum. You can check out a complete list of instructors, courses and prices at- https://schoolofwoodwork.com/ For The Newbies- Figuring out how to hold a piece for turning can be frustrating. Not every new turner has a nice new chuck to make life a little easier. Mike Peace posted a recent video on glue blocks. They are a very versatile and inexpensive. Although Mike uses a chuck to hold the glue block, an inexpensive wooden disk can be used instead. Here's one that doesn't require the chuck- The thicker block is threaded to match your headstock. It is made from scrap hardwood. The glue base is just pine. As the pine glue surface is worn away a new one can be glued in its' place. There is a small finish nail center on the lathe axis that assists in centering the turning piece to be glued to the pine. Expand Your Horizons- Last week I mentioned Sanding Paste. Mike Peace has added another video on this subject. This video explains how to make your own! It's really quite simple and expands on Mike's Beeswax/Mineral Oil finish. New Turning Items- Tim Yoder has a new Laser product for the turners who do hollow forms. He previews it in this video- Everything Else- Tim Yoder also has a two part video on turning an "inside-out" Christmas ornament- The kids next door are into the "Crafty Momma" thing. The Mrs. asked if I could help with her latest project. She wanted one of these- but when she priced out a newel post from the Borg she found it was way more expensive than she thought. Guess who came to the rescue- I cheated on the ladder rest. I had some dowel stock, but I did turn everything else. She will add the lamp. As with all respectable Crafty Mommas, this will be painted.
