This is my just started current scrimshaw project. Subject matter happens to be a 1784 Kentucke Territory map. The map is the work of a gentleman named John Filson, and as per the fancy cartouche title it was presented to the Congress but more specifically George Washington. It states "Late" commander of the army so he was no longer an active General but this was also before he was president.........things were just getting going . This is some really cool subject matter,...time period couldn't be better. Kentucky wasn't a sate until 1792,....this is still the frontier. We had just licked the red-coats,...kentucky long rifles were still the king,....scrimshawed powder horns were their constant companion,....and when you went to the outhouse you better have one eye out for injuns

This is my buddy Bill Smith's shop. I spend a lot of time there as per some of my posts here on the Patriot. Bill stopped doing scrimshaw work years ago,...so now that's my contribution...along with some horn making. I assure you everything here is proudly handcrafted,..it all starts with raw horn and leather. Every stitch is by hand,..every image on a horn is drawn by hand using historical reference,..no tracing paper or electric tools. Thanks for the opportunity to share. -Aaron

A Guild of Contemporary Horn Workers and Collectors In 1996, Roland Cadle of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, who had long been interested in the historic 18th Century horn trade, conceived the idea of hosting a “Horn Fair” at the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, PA. The horn fair consisted of a series of seminars and exhibits on the subjects of collecting and making objects from cow horn. It was such a positive experience for those who attended that eleven workers and collectors met afterwards to form a new organization called the Honourable Company of Horners (HCH). The founding members decided that the purpose of the organization would be to promote and preserve the knowledge of horn working. Officers were elected and the members decided to meet each year to hold seminars and conduct business in order to fulfill the mission of the organization. Source: About Us
