We went to the Springfield OH "extravaganza" this weekend. If you've never heard of it, it's one of the biggest antique, flea markets in the country. It happens twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. I believe there were over 1500 vendors this weekend. We drove about 300 mile round trip to attend, walked and walked for hours and I spent five bucks. I bought a tiny calipers. I told myself it will be great for when I turn finials but really I just thought it was cute. Nickel is for scale.

There was a time when you needed a tool, you just had to make it yourself. Last week I had a gentleman stop and look at some of my hand tools at First Friday. He was telling me about a few wooden tools he had. I ran into him at the auction on Saturday night and he said I have something to show you. A trip to his vehicle and he produced these three very nice hand made wooden tools. He said they had hung in his fathers shop for as long as he could remember and when he passed away he took them down and brought them home. He offered them to me, he wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate them and keep them, not just sell them. WOW! There is a Wooden Scribe, a Wooden vise and A Wooden Caliper. The scribe. It is scribed with measurements. And the back side. Then the wooden vise The wooden caliper. His father was a carpenter/woodworker and probably made these in the early 1900's. So excited to add them to the collection and really cool to have some history to go along.

My late father-in-law was a watchmaker who apprenticed in Germany just after WWI. I got what was left of his watchmaking tools at his passing (he'd sold most after his retirement). After years of not doing anything with them, my wife suggested something along the lines of "When are you going to throw out those suitcases full of my dad's tools?" I have an acquaintance who's a clock repairman, so I called him and offered to him or his buddies in the watch/clock club. He came out and sorted through them and suggested I might want to keep this. It's a spring loaded caliper. Measures to 0.1 mm, just right for my hand-cut dovetails ;-) Pretty cool, huh? The other tool I have is the hammer my dad used to build the house I grew up in and learned woodworking with. third try:

First time I ever ran across this before. I like it. I understand it can be ordered here instead of the link in the video. http://chairnotes.blogspot.com/p/ordering-calipers-and-drawsharp.html
